Hola guapitos. Today was absolutely one of the coolest days of my life thus far. I mean, really cool. So the other volunteers and I rented a pick-up truck and drove about an hour out of this incredibly loud and busy city. I can´t express how nice it was to be out in the countryside....mountains all around (high peaks with snow!)...burrows, sheep, pigs...streams, trees...it was grand. Really grand. Anyways, we rented horses for three hours and headed off into the mountains; riding through little pueblo villages along the way. Have I mentioned people´s reactions to ¨gringos¨ here? Oh my gosh, EVERYONE is so shocked. They all stop and stare...although they are generally really polite. (This was not the case in Lima-EVERY SINGLE man stopped and stared and made comments etc). Umm, what was I talking ... read more

Hi all... I am here in Peru! I wrote an entry a couple of days ago when I first got in...but it appears that it didn't get saved. Shucks. So anyways...here's how it's been so far: I traveled for about 26 hours or so that first day...flight got laid over in El Salvador. Slightly miserable. I would have been fine with it had I not had an incredibly bad cough...but I did. Of course I accidently put my inhaler in my checked bag to. Genius. Anyways, so the flights were not so good. I could not catch my breath at all-hacking and gagging constantly. The people on the plane absolutely hated me, but there was nothing I could do. Again, miserable. I did meet some people my age in El Salvador though-two girls from California that ... read more

Hi everyone!! It has been exactly a week since we left Toronto but it feels like weeks. So many things have happened that its hard to keep track of the days gone by :) Lima itself is a mix between extreme poverty and wealth, which is evident eveywhere you turn. Leaving us with a mix of emotions as we left the airport on our way to our hostel. Exploring Lima was exciting, the city is a buzz of energy all day long. Everyone is either taking a taxi or hopping on the bus (cambis), which are hilarious little buses, that stop anywhere on the street to pick people up. Even in the middle of intersections!!! all, you have to do is wave in their direction and they will stop immediatley for you, its crazy. We took ... read more

The trip to Huancayo on Saturday was a long one... 7 hours in total....but it was a comfortable one with Cruz del Sur and rather entertaining (watched 3 movies and played bingo). I decided to travel during the day because I thought it would be nice to watch the scenery and surely enough I wasn't let down! Although just before the bus left, I was told that usually people prefer to take the night bus so as to suffer less the symptoms of altitude sickness, which made me SO paranoid, but anyway ... :) Luckily the bus trip was fine. I did, however, get quite sick later that evening.... my head was spinning, I felt very nauseous and was about to faint a couple of times. I just went to bed and hoped I could sleep ... read more

hey:) finally found a free minute to write about the volunteering project I'm doing here in Peru. Short version for everybody who only wants a quick update: It's absolutely amazing and the people are incredible:) now a bit more detail: the organisation is called TINKUY PERU and is based in Huancayo, a city in the mountains of Peru. All the volunteers, and many other people ( mainly family members but you're never quite sure how many there actually are...) live in a big house with Tino and his family. Tino is the person who takes all the work and responsability upon himself to run the whole thing... the whole thing being the "andean shool", "the mountain project" and volunteers also help out in an orphanage...so there's plenty to do:) first thing i have to mention: compared ... read more

Today, I had a chance to go up to the mountain, where Tinkuy Peru is working on a new project with the kids up there. Seeing them bought tears to my eyes. Many of them live in mud brick homes with no running water and electricity and some of them don’t have homes or parents. I saw one child who was wearing plastic bags on his feet in lieu of shoes. Tino said to me, “It broke my heart when I first saw it too, but I talked to the boy and he says it’s fine—he’s used to it.” No one should be used to running around without shoes when the weather closes in around freezing during this time of year! All of the children were absolutely gorgeous (as the photos attest), but it’s so sad ... read more

Yesterday was my last day in Huancayo. It was bittersweet, as I was excited for my next adventure, but, despite only living there for a few weeks, I felt like I made a home there during my temporary tenure and I'm going to miss the life I had. One thing I won't miss, however, is the cacophony of morning sounds (the garbage truck music, people banging on the metal door, the fruit vendors, etc.) that ensure I woke up at least one hour before I needed to be awake (I guess it was good to start practicing for my re-entrance into the "real world"). There's a lot I´m going to miss though: * The Volunteers: I originally thought that most of the volunteers would be from North America, Britain, or Australia since a big piece of ... read more

hey hey everybody:) hope you're all well! had quite an exciting few days since i last updated. first good news, i managed to get over that annoying episode of food poisoning. all good again and munching all sorts of goodies 24/7 as usual:) the alfajores they make here are really to recommend....sooo much "dulce de leche"...sweeter than heaven! my trip from bolivia to peru was quite comfortable...well, whatever that means in bolivian terms. the first part of the trip went from copacabana to puno. as soon as i got on the bus with my argentinian friends I got kindly reminded of the friendliness of english people. there was this family of 5...sitting in our seats. so far not really a problem, up to that moment when i asked, in the politest way, if they were sure ... read more
