I wore my dogs out today. (Dad says "dogs" means "legs". Never knew that.) Up at the crack of dawn to Machu Picchu - and aside from being the most incredible place in the world, it has about a billion steps, all narrow and rocky and.... hard, basically. That was just the standard of the main ruins, the ones you see in all the postcards; we also took a few hikes up mountains, like Huayna Picchu and a part of the trail to the Inca Bridge. Even though a few hundred plus people try to hike the mountain each day, it´s no easy task. The majority of the trail is exactly like this: less than three feet wide, on the side of a 2,000 ft. cliff - no way you´d survive if you fell - and ... read more

in 1911, an American explorer and Yale university professor named Hiram Bingham, stumbled upon a mass of carefully laid granite stones, covered with overgrown jungle, and nestled in the high mountain ranges of south western Peru. this sprawling array of intricately laid stone structures, was soon to be revealed as Machu Pichhu, or the "lost city" of the fabled and revered Inca empire. "lost" is a relative term, applying mostly to the non-native world, however hiram's "discovery" became the catalyst to a renewed infatuation and awareness of the advanced and remarkable history of one of the world's first civilizations, the Inca empire. Machu Pichhu can now be reached in a variety of ways created by modern tourism, including trains and buses, however we choose to follow a more spiritual journey and hike the 4 day path ... read more

THE SACRED VALLEY AND MACHU PICCHU The Sacred Valley as a whole is beautiful. Surrounded only by mountains, it is so peaceful and quiet. Each day was better than the next! The weather was awesome, and it was pretty cool to be higher than the clouds everyday. PISAC Our first adventure was to go to Pisac and explore the ruins there. AMAZING!! These ruins are second only to Machu Picchu. What a great warm up for the main event. Look at the pics and you decide, we went just before sunset so the views were even that much more beautiful. The three of us took a collectivo bus from Cusco to Pisac which costs 2 soles each. Upon arrival we had a great lunch and walked around the market (which runs every Tues, Thurs, and Sun). ... read more

... read more

Well, where do we begin? We got to Cuzco on the night of Wednesday 15 March and you may well wonder what we've achieved in the 10days spent here thus far...... The unfortunate truth is that we have visited a total of 0 museums and gone on a total of 0 organised trips. Most of our time has been split between our bedroom (sounds better than it was!!!) and Cuzco's main Plaza. On Friday 17th we spent the day planning and sorting out the time ahead of us in Cuzco. Priorities were; Spanish lessons for a week, 2 days trip to Machu Picchu including a little hike and a flight out of Cuzco to La Paz, Bolivia (yes its not that far but as you know from previous entry, the busses have not always agreed with ... read more

This was our first view from the Sun Gate! The famous, fabled city of Machu Picchu (meaning Old Peak) lay hidden below us, obscured by white cloud..... But soon it cleared up, and we got our first glimpses of the mysterious city as it slowly emerged from the mist.... Machu Picchu was never found and chronicled by the Spanish, and so little is known about its purpose, or even how long it had been hidden for. In 1911, an American explorer named Hiram Bingham was determined to find out more. He was adamant that hidden deep in the jungle lay "The Lost City of the Incas", and he was determined to find it. He had already discovered a few of the ruins that we visited on the trail, but with his thirst for knowledge yet to ... read more

Machu Picchu is said to be the most visited place in all of South America and after spending a few days in the area we now know why. Unlike many people where the focus of their trip is visiting Machu Picchu we feel like it was something that we stumbled upon, but sure glad we did. Being thirfty we took the backpackers train, which travels at night, to the city of Agaus Calientes which is the closest city to Machu Picchu. Once the train arrived the craziness began with several hundred people disembarking from the train and just as many people offering a place to stay. We found a nice quiet hostal (or so we thought) near the river that provides the town's namesake. We dropped off our stuff and took a small walk about town, ... read more

It is completely spoiled by huge amount of tourists but it still is a magnificent structure in an overwhelming location. It is expensive on a South-American price scale and you quite don't feel you get your money's worth but you get to see the Machu Picchu you have seen in photos everywhere for your own eyes. That's what we felt about it. Aquas Caliantes is quite a shitty place that get's all the tourists without any effort. Not worth staying but we had to. The hostal was the worst with paint crumbling from the walls, snail community living in the bathroom ceiling and water floating on the bedroom floor. No need to fix these things since the tourists keep coming anyway. Ofcourse there are nice hotels as well, but the prices are on western level. Because ... read more
