Yea! Finally some pics of my trip to Peru and Bolivia. The program ends 4 weeks from this coming saturday, so things are getting pretty sad around here and busy...with finals coming up! That of course DOESNT stop the students from having their, pretty much, weekly protests! Im glad Im graduating cause it would be depressing going back to college in the states where classes are never cancelled for days at a time because of protests! ps..there will be 2 new listings. this one is for Peru (lima, cuzco and aguas calientes) and Machu Picchu. The next is for Lake Titicaca and Bolivia.... read more

To actually get to Machu Picchu involves getting there by bus, which is not at all like our TTC (LOL), and a train. We travelled by night so we didn{t see alot of scenery until our return to Cuzco. Once we arrived in Urumbamba, we took a taxi to Ollaytantambo and arrived at 3:00pm. Our train didn't leave until 8:00pm so we had plenty of time to take in the sites. Steve and I decided to have a quick beverage and get our bearings, then we noticed the stream of big tourist buses coming in. Our hearts sank, as we knew we would have to share the Ollanytantambo Ruins with the numerous tourists. The tourists go through the site at a much faster rate, so we eventually had the place to ourselves. As you will see ... read more

(Continued from last entry) The Sun Gate, Machu Picchu. Panting, walking in circles, wiping rivers of sweat from my face. Trying to recover and occasionally grinning with satisfaction at the other guys. There was absolutely no need to run like we did and it was a strange way to spend the first few moments at this spiritual place, but we felt like we had won a race and this was our prize. An unbeatable feeling. We settled in to wait for the rest of our group and dangled our legs over the edge. I broke out the chocolate snacks to put some energy back from the headlong charge through the dark. The sun was still on it´s way up from behind the ridge and any photos that we took bounced all of the light back from ... read more

Yesterday´s trip to Machu Picchu and climb up Huayna Picchu was really just an optional extra. But I could not just hang around in Aguas Calientes when Machu Picchu was only half an hour away on a bus. Today the tour group got up early to catch a bus from Agaus Calientes to Machu Picchu to get there before the people on day trips from Cuzco. Got to Machu Picchu about 7am, and most of us walked up to the Sun Gate to get the classic postcard views of Machu Picchu. About the same height as Huayna Picchu but certainly not as steep. The path to the Sun Gate is the one that people walking the Inca Trail come down to Machu Picchu after thier four day trek. Saw a few of them coming down as ... read more

Up early to catch the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo, or Aguas Calientes. Got to Aguas Calientes about 1030am, seemed the most touristy place so far in Peru. But what do you expect. Although there is a lot more to see, Machu Pichu is obviously one of the main reasons people come to Peru. Had the option of spending the rest of the day hanging around Aguas Calientes or going to Machu Pichu and hiking up Huayna Picchu, which is the hill you see in the background of the classic pictures of Machu Pichu. No choice really. The climb is quite steep, but not too difficult if you are fit and not afraid of heights, needless to say I am not fit and it was a bit of a struggle. The view from the ... read more

I returned yesterday from my 4 day hike along the Inca Trail, finishing at the highlight of the trip so far, Machu Picchu. I have 1 more night here in Cusco before heading to Puno and seeing what Lake Titicaca has to offer. But first, back to the big MP. I began the hike at Kilometre 82. The first day along the trail was a relatively easy 12km and we arrived into camp at around 4pm. The terrain was quite flat and we stopped at a couple of ruins along the way, just to get us in the mood for what we would be seeing on day 4. The hardest part of the first day wasn't coping with the altitude or the uphill parts of the trail. Instead it was avoiding the significant amounts of donkey ... read more

Well... Dave´s birthday... now what can I do to make sure that he remembers it for the rest of his life?? I think that a trip to the ancient city hidden in the cloud forests of peru should just about do it! Machu picchu (MP) for the non ancient peruvian historians amongst you, is an old Incan city... think that dave has told you who the incans were already! Anyway for some strange reason it was not "discovered" until the 1910s. Maybe that is because it is surrounded by unassailable mountainous andean cloud forests (called such because they are so high that they are constantly in the clouds!!) If you have seen pictures of south america then you would have seen pictures of mp... which is a good thing as we still cannot upload our pictures!! ... read more
