Well it´s been a full two days since we arrived in Cusco. We stayed at the beautiful Casona Yucay for two nights. Yesterday we started with a float trip (rafts) on the Urubamba River. After a nice lunch we toured the ruins of Ollantaytambo. Absolutely amazing, and more amazing was all but one person was able to climb the ruins at 9,000 ft. There is unfortunately some bronchial sickness going around our tour group and has sidelined a lady from Florida. Then Connie got sick, then Pat and now Janet and Jim are on meds (cold medicine). Thanks very, very much to Connie for providing anything we needed from her personal pharmacy. However none of us were sick enough to miss Machu Picchu! Today we took the train to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo. Had lunch in ... read more

Our visit to the Machu Picchu, the touristic atraction in Peru, was one of the highlights in our trip. To reach the secret town, we choose one of the cheapest option: first two buses to get from Cuzco to Ollantaytambo, from there a train in the evening to Aguas Calientes. The next morning we took a bus( for 12 dollars, my god, a daily budget, but the only alternative for a 4 hours steep trekking) to reach the entrance. The entrance fee was about 80 soles, and for that money you get the most impressive sight ever seen. It is difficult to describe the vibrations and the atmosphere,I can only advice you to put this place at least somewhere on you dreamlist... The prices to get there are ridiculous high, it is almost robbery, but I ... read more

Arrived in Cuzco in time for the England Vs Ecuador match in the World Cup.... I won't continue with the football thread in this blog as we all know what happened against Portugal.... again!!! The 4 day 26 mile hike to Machu Picchu (Quechan for Old Mountain), known as The Inca Trail was the highlight of South American for me. For those interested in a detailed itinerary of the trek use the following link which provides the 4 day breakdown. http://www.andeanlife.com/incatrail_itinerary_day_1.htm Due to our amazing guide Freddie, our Inca Trail involved longer Day 1 and 2 hikes and as a result a shorter Day 3 than described in the itinerary. See for yourselves if you can be bothered reading it all. Day 1 - Woke up early to be outside Hostel Loki at 5am, however the ... read more

June 28, 2006 Day four of the Inca Trail The last day of our hike we began earlier and were treated to the last bits of sunrise tingeing the sky pink. Our walk was through more cloud forest along the ubiquitous stone trail. More stairs and despite our guide´s assurances otherwise, they were most definitely not all down hill. This was the first day I felt sore at all, mostly in the down hill direction from the backside of the passes of the day before. We ate lunch at the Trekker´s inn just outside the ruin of Wiñay Wayna then continued on into the national park that houses machu picchu, this was our final segment. A lot of tours will take you to the Trekkers inn area to camp the last night and then get you ... read more

Let the Journey Begin While in Cuzco, I just simply had to at least see the famous ruins since I opted out on the longer hikes. I thought I would be brave and take the local bus to Ollayntaytambo and then catch the train to Aguas Calientes and it is also the cheaper option. Of coures no can begin a journey on an empty stomach so I grabbed some ceviche (the raw fish marinated in lime juice) at the local eatery and it was very delicious. So the ticket was really cheap, it only cost me around 5 soles which is less than $2. I am not sure why they assigned me the seat cause I got put into the back of the bus. I almost had leg room, it was really close and the back ... read more

With coincidence we arrived on the 21st at the Machu Picchu. One the first to arrive we watched the sunset creating special shadow figures on this special day. The 21st of June was a special day for the Inca's, with calculations they created holes and solids who form on this day different kind of shadow figures. What can i say more about this special place, i think the pictures say enough...... read more

The last two weeks has been so packed we've bearly had a chance to record our adventures. Clearly we're going to have to sit down at a computer for several days but we wanted to let you all know that yesterday, as the sun clipped the top of Machu Picchu after 4 incredible days hiking the "Inca trail", I proposed to Claire!! I'm delighted to say that Claire said yes and it topped off what has been one of the most amazing experiences we have ever had. The full blog of our adventures is to follow over the next couple of days. ... read more

First there was the 4-day Inca Trek, then there was the alternative mountain-bike-Inca-trek… and then, the most wisest, safest, sensible, easy and relaxing choice by far: the train. Why hadn’t I taken the train all the other times!? Machu Piccu- the lost (but found again) city of the Incas. Despite it being my 3rd visit to the old ruins- the spectacular vista still manages to take my breath away. It truly is an awe inspiring place with so many secrets. The amount of speculations on the what’s what and the how’s how of the citadel are questionable- basically we really have no clue about this magical place and that’s what makes it so mysterious. Dad had taken the 4-day trek to Machu Picchu, so mum, Elvis and I met him up there, it was good to ... read more
