Wow, what a fantastic 3 weeks we have had. The weather has been great, I think we have got wet once since Huancayo and it has got hotter and brighter. Huancayo to Ayacucho was impressive with the road leading into the mountains even further, then slowly snaking its way along the valley as it followed a river. The road became a track for about 100 miles and was quite tough going, but the scenery and the people we met along the way made it worth while. We eventually hit tarmac as we came closer to Ayacucho, but unfortunately our belly´s decided otherwise as we both suffered for 3 days with toilet problems and de-hydration. (Thankfully we think we have got rid of it and had a mild illness compared to a lot of other travellers we ... read more

Following the completion of the Inca Trail, there was no time to recover. We were whisked off to our accomodation and introduced to the boys and girls. The boys and girls are split into different districts of Cusco. The girls orphanage was in the suburb of Wanchaq which was only 5 mins in a tico taxi from the centre of Cuzco. Our accomodation was right on top of the girls Orphange which was very handy. The boys were about 10 minutes away in a slightly tougher neighbourhood, Santiago. The apartment was extremely basic, the kitchen consisted of a camping stove! Oh well, so much for doing some cooking! The girls all gave us a very warm welcome with each one introducing themselves and welcoming us to the Orphanage. Surprisingly most of them could speak english, some ... read more

The first signs of Christmas appeared in Arica, Chile seeming somewhat out of place amidst the palm trees and happy vultures. The plan was, when ariving in Arica, get hotel room, leave stuff there, have glorious glorious showers, bus to Nazca that night. That plan became: do all of the above except skip Nazca and spend two days in our seaside luxury overlooking THE PACIFIC OCEAN. That´s right folks, for $18 per night we lived it up with hot water, clean sheets and a patio view of the beach. The town itself was reasonably hip as well. The biggest shocker had to be, after 3 months without the western capitalism snuggling up with me at night, the giant yellow arches in the shopping district. So like good westerners we went...you know, just to test if it ... read more

Back in Cusco The next couple of days we didn´t do an awful lot because we were both suffering so much with the persistent flu. The lady manager in Jack´s Cafe had said it was doing the rounds in Cusco and she´d suffered for almost a month with a similar sounding virus! Great news! We shopped and ate lightly, meeting Ricardo and Margarita for evening meals, before they disappeared down to Puno on the bus, to visit Lake Titicaca. We visited Fallen Angel, a trendy restaurant in Cusco for our farewell meal. The steak was yummy although Jase moaned because they wouldn´t give him a dish of icecream for dessert, they only had fancy puddings! We had a couple of extra days in Cusco and planned to meet them in Puno on the Wednesday evening. Inka ... read more

Ahola, In our last blog entry we had got as far as Arequipa, Peru. We spent one full day chillen in Arequipa which we used to go to do a bit of shopping, look at the plazas ans stuff and go to the monestry. The monestry was the main touristy thing we did, i forget how much it cost to get in, 30 soles each maybe (10US). It was fairly interesting place to have a look around even if your not into the whole god thing, which i´m not. For those of you not familar with a monestry it is where the nuns chill out, live. This partiular monestry in Arequipa is massive, its spreadover 5 acres and is like a town within a town. Theres heaps of praying room, living quaters, kitchens and creepy religious ... read more

From Lima I took a bus to cuzco it was a short 20 hr trip.. The bus was nice though they served us 3 meals and showed 4 movies. A lot better then the plane ride thats for sure. The drive is only about 400 miles but it is all switch backs through the Andies. The views and the small mountian towns added so much color to the drive. I have been in Cuzco for a day now and love it. The markets and vendors on the street have the best homemade bread and fresh fruit. Not to mention the price (so cheap). I found a cheap hostel and booked for 2 nights here but I am going to move ASAP you get what you pay for thats for sure but I wont get into the ... read more

Well hello again campers. How are we all diddling today? I do hope everyone is fantastically well. I´m currently loving being back in civilisation albeit at 3400m meaning breathing is exercise rather than automatic. But at least the toilets flush! So...on with the story. Upon tardy arrival at Arequipa, we trotted out en masse to supposedly the best restaurant in South America, Zig Zag, for their Triple specialty grill consisting of steak (dreamy), ostrich (a touch chewy) and alpaca (melts in the mouth). Onwards into town via a fantastic cocktail bar (Adios Motherf**kers all round...basically everything behind the bar in a glass!), we took over the local karaoke bar where I set the ball rolling with a (passable IMO) rendition of In These Arms (Bon Jovi to those with limited musical sagesse). The standard remained high ... read more
