After the Nazca lines, we went on a tour of some of the other sites in the area, including the ancient Nazca aqueducts that are still used today (Jen´s favourite bit), and a demonstration of how the Nazca made their ceramics. Don´t think the tour was worth the money we paid, but never mind. Bus back to Lima the next day. We spent one night in Lima and in the evening went to an area with bars and nightlife. They celebrate Hallowe´en here in Peru, but they also celebrate traditional Peruvian music and dance on the same night, so we went out to see if we could find it. Not knowing where best to go, we chose a promising looking bar, and were treated to a live Peruvian band churning out some popular songs. It definitely ... read more

The first day in Cusco was spent wandering and exploring the city, as well as sorting out arrangements for the Inca Trail. That day we met a couple of Americans, Trey and Drew. We went for dinner with them in the evening to Jacks restaurant. The food was far from authentic but was great, and much needed after the poor food we encountered in Bolivia. That night we started in the Irish bar "Paddy Flaherty´s" and finished in "Up Town" on a long awaited crazy night out with lots of drinking and antics. The next morning we had a bit of a lie in then explored more of Cusco visiting a nice cafe and restuarant before catching a very early night to recover from our night out and to ready ourselves for our 6 am pick ... read more

We've been up and down the Sacred Valley today with a trip to the market in Pisac for one hour and then onto (a very pleasant) lunch at a country restaurant and our travel company's local agent then saw fit to take us to Ollentaytambo to see the Inca ruins! Jen enjoyed it but David had to bottle out because of a combination of vertigo and clumsiness. We then did a circuitous route dropping other travellers off, first at the Hotel Pakaratimpu (out of which we checked this morning!), another at a Casa Andina establishment near Urubamba, two drops in Yucay, and then one drop in Cusco before getting to the Casa Andina where we had left one of our cases a few days ago. Our guide for the day had asked us to stay for ... read more

In Cusco I continued my trend of finding a hostel by simply going with the recomendation of the locals who wait at the bus station for travelers. The thing this time is the girl who brought me to the hostel did not work for the hostel, she worked on commission and of course wanted to sell me a tour afterwards. This didn´t work for her though as I found a company more my speed the next day, and was on my way to Machu Picchu. There are many ways to get to Machu Picchu, the easiest being the train. This would be far to boring for me, so I opted for the mountain biking and hiking option which goes through Santa Teresa and jungle. This started as any South American adventure does, late, as I waited ... read more

Life in Canada is so sanitary and we often live without sounds of the world around us. In complete opposite there is always some reminder of the world outside via sound waves here. I can now easily identify the sound of a pig being shoved into a large sack, hoisted onto the roof of a van and secured to the top for a two hour, nausea-inducing down-mountain ride no unpaved road. I also know what it looks like when that pig comes loose and dangles partway down infront of the window of the van. All of that adventure made possible by some strong antibiotics the doctor here gave me after my strong cold gave way to a bacterial respiratory infection. The family has offered all types of advice as to why I fell sick and how ... read more

Woke up really early as we had a 6 am flight to Cusco. Checked out off Samay Wasi and off we went, the plane ride to Cusco was fantasic, the sun was just waking up as well and casting a weird and beautiful glow on everything. Looking below we could see cotton wool clouds and the Andes snow covered peaks peeping out now and again. Just too beautiful for words. Got picked up again from the airport, courtesy of backpacker hostel we were staying at (Samay Wasi). Not one's to waste time, we checked and went off to explore the beautiful city around us. WOW was all I could think, the narrow alleys, the new town being built on the old Inca walls, the weathered faces of the locals. It was all too beautiful. Also we ... read more

Today the dad made pisco sours at lunch, totally cool and very very good might I add. Did I mention the alpaca sweater was the best purchase ever? I am moderately warm in the evenings now! To take a shower you have to flip up an electric switch above the shower to activate the hotwater. It is a little dangerous, the whole electricity and water combo thing, but whatever. Yesterday I had a warm shower. I almost cried I was so happy! Then I went and sat in the courtyard and let my hair dry. I also snuck my feet out of my shoes for a few minutes, don´t tell! It is cold at night but the sun is really intense during the day. You have to wear sunblock or you´ll burn. For lunch yesterday I ... read more
