Cusco We had an early start with a flight from Arequipa to Cusco, with a touchdown in Juliaca on route. For some strange reason, we all had seats apart, but it was only a short flight, so no great hardship. Two descents were tough on Rachel´s ears as she couldn´t equalize due to congestion. We arrived at Cusco at 3800m and our taxi raced down periously narrow cobbled streets to The Hotel Grial, our little two star place in San Blas. We were all weary and treated ourselves to breakfast at Jack´s Cafe. Everyone helped Rach finish her massive stack of pancakes with fruit and cream, giggling at the piddled Irish lads trying to engage in drunken conversation with us. Frank, our Inka Trail guide, met us at the hotel for our briefing. He showed us ... read more

We had our tickets and were ready to spontaneously take off a day early for Puno. The time was tight and packing even tighter but it was an entirely reachable goal. The only thing is I had to throw my leaving party at the orphanage a bit early and be home by 6 (I mean, 6:30, how about 7?). It was hard to leave especially since I thought I would have two more weeks before I decided to end my school and explore the country. They sang me a song (heaven help them all, I sang them a song) we ate cake, a few ones I spent more time with sang a horrible translation I did of the Hakuna Matata song. We took pictures. Luckily I will visit a few more times and bring photos whenever ... read more

Here I am with just over three more weeks to go. My next big adventure will finally be a real trip within South America which means I will be going to the clinic tomorrow for my Yellow Fever vaccine. The Bolivian government prefers only vaccinated people and hey, it's good for 10 years so from having studied business I think it is a good investment. The plan: myself and Kate (cool chick from Wisconsin who lives down the hall/balcony from me) will be leaving on next Friday evening to reach the famous Lake Titicaca (reknowned for being the highest freshwater lake and having some sweet sweet floating islands made of reeds). Once there we will spend a few days exploring and hopefully stay on an island with a local family. From there we will trek to ... read more

The flight to Cusco from Lima was an extremely quick, comfortable and civilised affair; a little shopping, a quiet coffee and a 1 hour flight. Definitely worth the extra money in time saved and comfort when compared to the 17-27 hour bus... Landing back at altitude we expected the usual shortness of breath and dizziness etc but were pleasantly surprised to find the effects fairly mild (except when climbing some of Cuzco's hilly streets; like the one up to our hostel... hard....work...). Cusco is a very cool place to hang out. A very well preserved Colonial town with lots of beautiful buildings, plazas and churches and lots of really cool restaurants, cafes and bars. Also heaps of stores selling the obligatory alpaca/llama products, ponchos, woolly hats, gloves etc and carvings, art, jewellery blah blah blah... lots ... read more

The Incas built Cusco in the shape of a Puma and I have been living just north of its anus for 8 days now. I´m in this great dorm complex with a huge courtyard, full kitchen access, and great stories from the transients. Vacant, old town Cusco is actually a pretty impressive colonial site with imposing churches staring down various plazas along with cobblestone streets and other Spanish remnants, some of which still on Inca foundations. Most of the day this is somewhat obscured by hordes of gringos you don´t see in the smaller towns along the way. I´ve been taking six hours of one-on-one language school a day and so far it´s been pretty good. Excruciating and draining, but good. The school is an NGO that trains single mothers to teach Spanish and most of ... read more

The city of Cusco offers one of the best places for a game of 'ultimate punch buggy'. What is that? Well it hinges on the ability to locate Volkswagen Beetles and then having at least one other person nearby that is sufficiently punchable. The extreme version requires many more Beetles, a keen eye for kitsch and fast fists. My neighbourhood here is perfect as the house to beetle ratio is about 4 to 1. This week has been a bust for blogging but with good reason: Mark came to visit so I took some time off pretty much everything. No school, I was allowed to speak english and for sures, no blogging. The week went by so quickly although for him there is still another 24.5 hours of travel before he can call the vacation quits. ... read more

The Sacred Valley Before starting on the Inca Trail we decided to take a tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas to get some background history of the region, after all they did not only go between Cusco and Machu Pichu! The tour got off to a very bad start with the bus seeming to aimlessly drive around the centre of town for about half an hour before we picked up our guide, who spent the next 10 minutes speaking in Spanish! Fortunately she then proceeded to switch seemlesly between Spanish and English and was excellent. Our guide carried with her a minature flag of Cusco, and took it very badly when we told her it reminded us of the international gay flag. She was adament that the town was not the international gay capital ... read more

Cusco, which is 11,151 feet above the level of the sea, has allot of diversity, with a European feel. Have lunch on the balcony of one the many resturants overlooking the Main Square and people watch...see the colorful clothing, the school children in their uniforms, the old man on the park bench. Then explore the many Museuems and Grand Churches. ... read more
