Yeah, so...three weeks have passed since I last updated this blog. What do you expect, I titled this thing ¨Tagg Doesn´t Blog¨. I could offer you all sorts of explanations and excuses as to why it took me so long to get around to this, but honestly, its Mallory´s fault. No seriously, I blame Mallory. 4/26/08 Let´s see, last I checked in with everyone I was just about to cross the border from Ecuador to Peru along the Pan-American Highway. I took a bus from Riobamba to the border town (Huaquillas). This was a mistake. I should have taken a bus straight through i.e. one city in Ecuador to another in Peru. Walking across this border with a big red backpack and camera strapped to your hip is a terrible, terrible idea. After getting my exit ... read more

First day at the school As mentioned above, I had signed up for 3 weeks intensive Spanish lessons, combined with a home stay at a local Peruvian family. On Monday morning, I went to the school's office and started out the first lesson. Before this, I had studied Spanish on my own for about a year, but the class was still hard. The rule was that both the teacher and the students could only speak Spanish, and I barely had spoken anything outside of "como estas?" and "donde esta el bano?" before starting the class. Luckily, due to the slow business at the school at the time, there were only two students in the class, even though it was designed for 4. For that reason, the teacher was able to adjust her pacing more or ... read more

Three weeks in Peru came and went in a flash. And as everyone knows from my previous post, it is completely Mallory’s fault that I never got a chance to post anything. So this post is going to be a bit of a catch-up, along with as many of the best pictures I took along the way. Here we go. 3/26/08 Mancora After relaxing in my room (Hostel Betty´s House) for a few hours from the crazy cross-boarder trip I threw on my swim trunks and headed to the beach. Went for a quick swim, but only had time for a wave or two before sunset. As I was watching the sun go down I ran into a group of locals (well, two Peruvian, and one Argentinean) who were kind enough to let me practice my ... read more

Hello all! Second update in nearly two weeks of being on the other side of the world!!! Where to start: the shower in the Mad flat is always bloody freezing and it´s driving us both insane. Other than that, the first week of teaching has been pretty intense. Every morning, we travelled for half an hour to work from 9-12 in a place called San Jeronimo market, at the back of which are two tiny classrooms that each holds approximately 35 kids under the age of 5. We had one class each, and were there to help the teachers to control the class and give them exercises and activities to do. The poverty that the children live in is unbelievable, and they were incredibley hard to control as they were all so desperate for attention. At ... read more

Julie - Hi everyone...well, we are still in Cusco but leaving today for Ollantaytambo, about 80kms from here lower down in the mountains. From here we will get the train on Tuesday to Machu Picchu. We have had a very relaxing time in Cusco and seen most of the sights...lots and lots of old rocks! I love the archaeological sites, having studied ancient history in school, but I think Marco is a little over them! There are still more to see though... Marco has been eating his way through Cusco and enjoying everything on offer. I am still not eating much as I had another bout of gastro just as I thought I was coming good. We found a little British pub here the other night and had chips with gravy and watched the big soccer ... read more

Hello, I shall start off again from where I left off last night which was actually still in Costa Rica, so here goes. The next day was getting ourselves down the west coast to Jaco, which is pronounced aco - silent J, It took us a while to figure that out. Anyway, it was 5 hours in a shuttle, which is really just a small minivan with a crazy Costa Rican Driver, which seems to be mandatory for Interbus which is the company we were using. The Centre of Costa Rica is mountains and to get anywhere you have to go over these really windy roads that are quite narrow at break neck speeds, with 10 wheeler lorries on the inside of you, it is a little bit eye opening and jaw dropping at first but ... read more
