I awoke to the sound of rain hitting the large window overlooking the back of the apartment...it wasn't as strong as it had been the night before, but it dampened my spirits a bit. Instead of heading out in search of something to eat, and risking getting seriously depressed by the weather here in Cuenca, I decided to fix my own breakfast. I had bought some ham, bologna and fresh rolls at a small store in the older section of town the night before, and someone had thoughtfully left two eggs in the refrigerator. I turned on my Texas Red Dirt Music feed from the internet, and tackled the job of preparing an American style breakfast, my first in Ecuador. Dano's apartment had a really nice propane stove, as well as everything needed to prepare a ... read more

I woke up this morning from a deep, deep sleep. There was a chill in the air, so I was tempted to stay in bed for a while, savoring the warmth and collecting my thoughts. I had no idea what time it was, or what the weather was like outside, but I really was in no hurry to find the answers to either question. I knew that I had a couple of days to unwind and get to know Cuenca, and like a good wine, the experience was meant to be savored, not gulped down in a hurry. Eventually my bladder got the best of me and I aroused myself to go pee, and then see what could be seen from the back windows of my apartment. A look out the back window confirmed that grey ... read more

I woke up at my regular time, 6:30, and I could hear the rain on the roof, so I just rolled over and went back to sleep. Check out time was noon, and I knew that noon was the earliest bus leaving Milagro for Cuenca, so I was in no particular hurry. I finally roused myself up a couple of hours later and luxuriated in the first really hot shower in days. A word of caution to travelers. I don't know whether it's because it's south of the Ecuator (where water drains in the opposite direction than it does in the Northern Hemisphere) or just a flaunting of generally accepted building practices, but there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason for which side to put the hot water on in Ecuador. I waited for like ... read more

Please check the posting on July 10th for the full story of how we found our new home. This was truly Godsent!!! The pictures took two months to put together. They are the before we moved in, cleaned and painted and after we painted the entire house and decorate pictures. I know there is a lot, but it is a huge house - about 4,000 square feet.... read more

I’m sorry that I haven’t posted anything for a while. Since we rented a new, larger home in July and had to clean and paint the entire interior we were quite busy for a while. Even after we moved in, the were a lot of items to be hung.(Pictures in the next post) Believe me, hanging a picture here is a lot different than in the States. There is no drywall here. All the walls are concrete over brick or block. So you don’t just bang a nail in the wall and hang the picture. It’s drill a hole, put in a plastic insert for a screw or a few toothpicks (awesome way to just put a nail in a hole and have it hold). So here are the pictures of the street art that I ... read more

An jeder Stelle kleine ... read more

We left Mancora in a minivan headed for Tumbes to catch our direct bus to Cuenca. When we arrived in Tumbes I gave our voucher in at the station to exchange it for our bus ticket to Cuenca, however I received tickets to Guayaquil. I questioned the tickets and was told I would have to buy new ones to go to Cuenca, after trying to explain that my original voucher was for Cuenca I finally got the tickets I wanted but learnt that we would have another change of bus. At least there were several other people on the bus also heading for Cuenca, safety in numbers always feels comforting. Our bus arrived at the border and we joined the unmoving queue to receive our exit stamp for Peru. Eventually we got our exit stamps and ... read more

Braulio and Chanel have been living in a traditional Ecuadorian home for a young couple - a combination kitchen and dining room, a bedroom and a bathroom. But now with Mandy here they needed to expand. So Braulio got all the required permits and supplies and then we had a work day to help build two new rooms - a living room and a master bedroom. At the Men's Bible Study Last month I asked all the guys if they would be willing to come to a work day to help out. Everyone volunteered. Even a couple that is only here for two months on an exploratory trip volunteered. So we had a great group along with Braulio's brothers Emilio and Boris. We got started about 10:00 and finished about 4:00 (Saturday). The walls could not ... read more
