We went to the park in Gualaceo for lunch and to just relax for a little while. We arrived at the restaurant about 15 minutes before they opened for lunch, so we had some time to look around. What a simple little town. They were preparing for the Corpus Christi celebration. They would be voting on the Reina (queen) of the festival that afternoon. The one selected would be celebrated and later, in the evening, would have a candle lit ride down the river with everyone celebrating her coronation. We had a very nice lunch of chicken, rice, muenestra (beans), orange juice and a small cup of a fruity dessert. We went back out to the park just in time to catch the end of the high school band going through. There was a very long ... read more

When we left the park, we drove higher into the mountains to a small town which I did not get the name of. In the pictures you can see the clouds lowering. We thought we would get some rain, but it actually started warming up. We stopped at a very small home and in the front of the house sat a woman making a hat. She starts working about 6 am and ends about 8 pm. By that time she should have a hat made. Her husband was working bringing more straw to her. The straw has to be wet in order for her to weave it. There was another woman sitting on the curb outside the fence surrounding the front of the house also weaving a hat. Once the hats are completed she sells them ... read more

We had a great tour today. We went to so many places and I took so many pictures that I am going to break it up by the places we went to. First of all, we went to La Casa de la Makana in Gualaceo. The following is taken from their brochure: "The most representative artisan workshop is owned by Senor Jose Jimenez. This rustic house where the sun shines in with difficulty resembles a museum where the years have stopped on the technique, ability, ancestral tools and on the works of art. This art has to do with a woolen cloth called "Macana" used by women of the Sierra and that serves as a protection from the cold. Due to its beauty and elegence, it is in great demand by visitors who come from the ... read more

Well, this was a day the Lord truly blessed. Our Ecuadorian grand daughter, Mandy, was dedicated to the Lord at Calvary Chapel Cuenca today. She is the first child to be dedicated in the English service. We were very blessed to have Braulio's mother, Maria, and his brother, Boris, join us for the dedication. Afterwards we all went to Joy and Simon's home for a potluck luncheon. Not a lot to say, but a lot of pictures.... read more

Yesterday a group of us went to the SOLCA Cancer Ward for Children here in Cuenca. Debi had a chance to go three months ago, with two other ladies from church. This time there was six of us. Kathy Dodd, Nancy Korica, Jennifer England, John Thompson, Debi and I. Jennifer did face painting, Nancy helped serve, and the rest of us made balloon animals, flowers, hats and swords. Nancy was having so much fun "dueling" with one of the kids that she bumped into a room divided that fell on top of some boxes on the other side. When it happened it caused the bottom of the divider to kick up and it hit her behind her knee. Later in the evening Debi went to her apartment and waited with her for an ambulance ($40) to ... read more

Here is more information on our Feria Libre Ministry in the potato section. The majority of the vendors in this section come from an area outside Cuenca that does most of the potato growth in Ecuador. One of the women in the pictures is Susan Stiles. She and her husband have been in Ecuador for thirty years. The used to have a mission in the area (the name of which I don't remember) that most of the potato farmers come from. So when they moved to Cuenca and they saw many of the people they already knew at the Feria Libre, they started the children's ministry there in the potato section. Those of us from Calvary Chapel have only been involved for about six months. Others in the pictures are the Thompson family - Nancy is ... read more

Today we went on another tour with the Chamber of Commerce. This time to a number of places. Let's start with a little history of courtesy of Wikipedia. The Battle of Tarqui, also known as the Battle of Portete de Tarqui, took place on February 27, 1829 at Portete de Tarqui, near Cuenca, Ecuador. It was fought between troops from Gran Colombia, commanded by Antonio José de Sucre, and Peruvian troops under José de La Mar. It was a victory for Gran Colombia. After winning independence from Spain, the coun... read more

After going to the monument we went to the local community of Victoria del Portete (Victory at Portete). It is a very small community that is about to start expanding. Most of the communities in Ecuador have small schools with a limited number of teachers, so a lot of the time the teacher has two or even three grades of students in the same room. The federal government has decided to build larger schools in one community and combine the schooling for a number of communities by busing the children to the new schools with all of the teachers from the various communities being at the one school. The schools will be grades one through 12. Victoria del Portete is one of the communities to get a new school. We were told that the federal government ... read more

As we were leaving Fernando's home it started getting cooler and raining. We could actually see how low the clouds had come. Of course, we are at 8,500 feet elevation, so we see a lot of clouds. We then drove to LacTeos de la Vaca milk factory. We had to split up into two groups, so at first we watched as a truck pulled in with the collection of a number of local farmers who sold their milk to the factory. You can see sample of the milk being taken out of the truck for testing before they unload it all. Then we had to gown up before we went inside for the tour. It was extremely clean inside. The facility is cleaned four times a day. The first process is to boil the milk in ... read more

Phase three of our tour today was a ride to our guide, Fernando's home. He and his family provided a wonderful organic lunch for us (popcorn, rice, cubed beef and gravy, salad, tea and dessert). He then gave us a tour of his garden, naming all of the different plants that they had. Then he took us through his new building that was used for production of dried fruits and vegetables, jerky and cheese. We had samples and a chance to purchase some of his products. The pork jerky was very good. The jellies and jams that we bought went well with croissants for breakfast the next day.... read more
