As in any city in the States, regretfully, we have taggers and graffiti here in Cuenca as well. But the city officials are trying to focus more toward art than destruction of property. They have allowed the 'street artists' to paint walls in certain areas. They even have a contest for the best art work. there are just a few of the pictures I have taken, but it is just a small sample, so I will post more in the future.... read more

We really love the rivers here in Cuenca. I may have mentioned it before, but in case I didn't the formal name of the city is Santa Ana de Los Cuatro Ríos de Cuenca (Santa Ana of the Four Rivers of Cuenca). The dominant features of the city's geography are also the source of its name in Spanish: the four rivers of Cuenca (meaning a basin made by a confluence of rivers). These rivers are the Tomebamba (named after the Inca culture), Yanuncay, Tarqui and Machangara, in order of importance. The first three of these rivers originate in the Páramo of Parque Nacional Cajas (Cajas National Park) to the west of the city. These four rivers are part of the Amazon river wat... read more

Our friend Braulio has been going to school five nights a week to get his Professional Drivers License. On Tuesday the school had an open house at Parque de la Madre, so Debi, myself, Chanel and Mandy all took a bus into town (with me carrying a large stroller) to support him. Normally this is not an easy feat. The bus drivers usually try to pick people up and drop them off on the run. The bus we take only comes by about a block and a half from our house. It usually comes up the hill about 10 minutes before the hour and goes back down about 10 minutes after the hour. As we left our house at about 5 minutes before the hour, we were delayed a few minutes by our landlord, Don Julio ... read more

One of the ministries that some of the people from our church participate in is called the Feria Libre (Free Fair) Market Potato Aisle Ministry. I know it's a long name, but it just describes where the ministry is held. The Feria Libre is what most in the US would think of as a very large Flea Market. But it's not just what people have taken out of their garage to get rid of. These are people that actually make a living by selling whatever it is they have. And they have just about anything you can think of - clothing, food, animals, etc. The busiest day is on Wednesday when even the parking lot is set up with booths for vendors. Daily they have booths set up inside a large building which include actual stores ... read more

Vilcabamba Known as the ‘Valley of Longevity’, Vilcabamba is a small town in Southern Ecuador famous for the age and health of its residents with one resident reportedly being 120 years old. Situated about a 90minute drive from the nearest airport of Loja (“Loha”), Vilcabamba is nestled in a valley surrounded by gorgeous Ecuadorian mountains, with clear springs and crisp mountain air. The town has become a mecca for Western health enthusiasts worldwide and attracts thousands of tourists each year looking for respite from the 9-5 daily grind. As I don’t mind a bit of meditation and yoga, I decided to spend a week in Vilcabamba before heading to the Galapagos Islands. To get there, I left the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires at about 5am, to fly to Loja airport via Guayaquil, Ecuador where ... read more

A few months ago Debi found some posts on Facebook about pallet furniture. One of them was a pallet attached to a wall and used for shelving. It took a long time, but we finally found some pallets, so I stained and clear coated one of them. Today we hung it on the wall. We still need to get some more colorful items to put on it, but we love it. When we return from the States the end of April we are having the living and dining room re-painted beige/light brown, so this will really look great.... read more

Several of the ladies that attend the Women's Bible Study on Tuesdays do not even go to Calvary Chapel Cuenca. But evidently there are not a lot of bible studies going on in town, so they come to ours. Back in February, one of the ladies heard about the Balloon Ministry and asked us to help her increase the population of their church (International Christian Church) by providing balloons to draw the children, which draws the parents. The day after we helped her they had eight new children in the church, along with their other family members. Well, they moved the location of their church and again asked us to help out. So on Saturday morning we showed up, balloons and pumps in hand. There was Braulio, Chanel and Mandy, Kathy, Nancy and Mike, Mark and ... read more

Believe it or not, after all the walking at the farm, then again at the zoo, when we got back to Cuenca we decided to walk around El Centro. We went to the "Broken Bridge", although it is no longer broken. It collapsed many years ago into the Tomebamba River. It has now been turned into an event site on just one side of the river. Then as we walked around I took a few pictures of some of the churches and some of the street art. The city government decided to try to cut down on the tagging by offering certain areas for artist to paint. Some of the are weird, and I don't take pictures of those, but some are very nice.... read more

After we left the farm, we drove over to the Tarqui Zoo. It was rather small, the walk around the various cages was a little difficult, but everything was very clean and they had a lot of animals. We had lunch here and then drove back to Cuenca.... read more

Today we joined 28 other expats (Gringos) on a tour bus provided by the Cuenca Chamber of Commerce. We took a drive for about 30 minutes to the University of Cuenca's Experimental Dairy Farm. It is located on 563 acres of land that used to be owned by the government. They only have about 55-60 head of cows, a couple of horses and about 50 guinea pigs. They told us how they are trying to get the Ecuadorian cows to match the milk output of the International cows (from the US and other countries). The Ecuadorian cows produce about 12 - 15 liters of milk per day. The International cows produce 20 - 30 liters per day. They are doing this strictly through research, not through steroids or hormones. They also showed us how they do ... read more
