Tonight we went out to dinner at a new Italian restuarant. We took our usual #5 bus and about half way there it took a turn that we had never taken before. It went quite a way from the normal route, and at one point we decided to get off and walk. The normal walk from the stop we usually get off at is about a quarter of a kilometer. When we got off the bus, it was close to a kilometer walk. Oh well, it helped us build up our appetite. After dinner we walked along the river. In early December the city puts up a number of decorations along the river that are lit at night. Then they put up a huge Nativity scene at the Otorongo Plaza. During the walk we passed a ... read more

Feliz Navidad from Cuenca, Ecuador!!! We started the morning with a gift exchange with Braulio, Chanel and Mandy. It was a lot of fun watching Mandy on her first Christmas morning. After that we all went to Mike and Nancy's for breakfast and more gift exchange. We got home about 11 and thought we were in for the day. Shortly thereafter we heard a band playing, looked down our street and saw another parade. So I grabbed my camera and went out to get more pictures (as if I didn't get enough the day before).... read more

On Sunday we held a combined Spanish and English Service and invited the congregations from Calvary Chapel Gualaceo and Calvary Chapel Troncal. After the service there was a large free luncheon for everyone. Then on Monday night, Debi and I and two other Gringos were invited to dine with all of the elders and their families. Quite an honor.... read more

Well, this is a little out of date, but it was a great day. We left home about 7:30 and went to Michael and Jenny's house to pray before leaving for the orphanage. We took a very nice bus ride for about an hour into the Yungilla Valley. You just tell the driver or the money taker that you want to get off at the orpahange and they pull to the side of the road to let you out. $1.50 per person. On the ride down we saw a bunch of motorcycles pass by including one person dress as Santa Claus/Papa Noel. Then we passed them at a roadside store where they had stopped for a drink. We got to the orphanage and Michael and Jenny gave us a tour of the facility. This orphanage is ... read more

What a great time we had at our Calvary Chapel Cuenca Christmas Pot Luck. We had over forty people come with food and presents for a White Elephant (Dirty Santa) gift exchange. There was food galore - turkey with all the trimmings, salads, desserts and of course the most important - fellowship. We even had a number of non-English speaking Ecuadorians come who participated in the gift exchange (and I don't think they really understood the idea until after a few steals, but then they got into it).... read more

Well, I feel really foolish. I just checked the name of the big parade on Christmas Eve from the blogpost that I put on last year and realized that I had 2014 when it should have been 2013. So, now you get to see the pictures from the parade that actually is in 2014. This parade last for eight hours. That's not the length of the parade, but so many people want to be in it that it takes eight hours to pass you if you remain in the same spot. We did not. When I got to over 200 pictures we called it quits. I don't have too much of a problem getting the kids who are on horseback to look at me for the picture. I just keep the camera down and when they ... read more

I woke up at 6am to catch the 645am bus to Cuenca to meet up with the Abad family (Michelle Abad is one of my best friends and her family is Ecuadorain in the country for th holidays to see family). caught the bus just fine and had a connection in Riobamba, 2 hours from Banos). By accident I got off the bus at the wrong stop. Totally lost I asked some kids my age where to go to catch the bus to Cuenca, and I only had 40 minutes to figure it out. They directed me toward a city bus. Jumped on the city bus and asked these older women where to go. They laughed at me, due to being a gringo with bad spanish and being lost, but were very helpful and told me ... read more

Cuenca - Day 13 Delicious cherries for breakfast! Walked a few blocks down to the river, which is fairly wide and very clean. A park with an outer track was along the river. Several groups were exercising, and a soccer game was going on. There also appeared to be some sort of graduation ceremony. Right on the edge of the park was Escuela de Marcha, a famous race-walking school that trains Columbian refugee children. Bob is a good tour guide! He next took us by the Museo Landivar. Although it was closed, we could still see the famous ruins where the Canari, Incas, and Spanish civilizations built over one another. We walked to Plaza San Blas. There were marching bands in the area, and many decorations for Christmas. Today must be some sort of holiday. There ... read more

Cuenca - Day 12 At 7am we heard some kids singing. Must be a school nearby. Decided to get going early. Took a taxi to the bus depot, found Alianza to get our ticket to Cuenca. The bus driver was at the counter, so we just followed him out to the bus, which was up one floor. Tickets were $8, and the ride about 4.5 hours. There was a big Mac's at the terminal. They seem to be all over Ecuador, including a very conspicuous one on the north end of Malecon 2000 in Guayaquil. Bus stopped for a couple of tolls and for gas ($2.29 here). Saw some egret and hawk-like birds along the way. Out of the town Jesus Maria, we bought a chicken empanada to tide us over. This guy made quite a ... read more

Through where? Ecuador! Yes it is true, and it is sad and perhaps even bad, but I am just in Ecuador to get to Peru. Not because I don't like Ecuador, or wouldn't like to see it, but because of the priorities on this trip. At first I was going to do the Galapagos Islands as I passed on down, but as you all know, my money dictated otherwise. So, without the Galapagos, there was the rest of Ecuador to consider. I considered it, and I decided it was not the main aim of this journey. I have been to Ecuador before and I will return here one day. But Ecuador needs time, and if I can't give it the time it deserves than I rather just go through it relatively fast instead of even trying. ... read more
