baños ecuador. i am looking at a sign in this internet cafe; "volunteer help wanted...!", looking for an english teacher to work in the farming community of runtun (next to baños, below volcano). lodging and meals provided, no fee. kids 6_12... should we do it?!! we just got here this morning after 19 hours on a bus through the poorest and scarriest cities and towns we have encountered thus far. lots happened on the bus ride, but i dont want to ruin it with poor writing skills, so i am pasting chloes account of the ride . it gives you a picture of what we are doing; At two forty five we got to the bus station (by way of a bicycle taxi) and asked for tickets to Ambato. it turned out that the lonely planet ... read more

Arriving in Bańos in the morning after a long overnite bus from the coast was a much welcomed surprise. Bańos is a small town located in a lush green valley with an active volcano overlooking it, and is full of adventure travel things to do. The first day we spent the morning catching up on lost sleep in the nicest hostel we have stayed in so far, called Hostal Marquez. We got a spacious room with really comfy beds, with a nice balcony and a view of the main waterfall in Bańos called the Virgin. We decided to do a night tour of the active volcano nearby, and got driven in an open aired “Chivy” truck blasting reggaeton music with 20 other people that took us to a viewpoint of Bańos. It was raining pretty hard ... read more

After a few uneventful and dull days in Cuenca and Riobamba we headed east to Baños. That was what it looked like on a map anyway, unfortunately the eruption of a volcano a few years ago means we had to head north first and then east as a landslide had destroyed the road. We arrived to find the town quite quiet and after checking into the hotel we had a chat with the hotel manager who told us their hotel was empty as the guests had left as they were scared of the volcano erupting as its been playing up recently (not the exact scientific term). They put us at ease by informing us of the evacuation procedures though, if it kicks off they would knock on our door and we would all run down the ... read more

27th September- 29th October The Idyllic town of Banos is situated in one of the lushest green valleys that i´ve come across, and shouldered nearby by a volcano, which has erupted twice in the last few months, sending people running! i heard that if the eruption was big enough, then you have about 4 minutes to get across the other side of a bordering river! and the scarry thing is, they can never predict when this will happen! the volcano is almost always mildly active and you can see the red flames in the dark of night. stayed in a very cool hostel called ¨plantas y Blanco¨, with its own steam room and a rooftop bar overlooking the town. Met 2 Canadian girls called Sheryl and Erin and for the next 2 days we attempted to ... read more

Laguna Quilotoa Well, we´re finally travelling after Quito. It was quite sad saying goodbye to Quito after being there for so long. It´s a busy, diverse city with lots of polluting buses but we really loved it. From the more touristy La Mariscal area to the Colonial Old Town to the modern New Town with all the shinier buildings... and all the lovely volcanoes surrounding it. First journey was to Latacunga and from there to Laguna Quilotoa. It´s about 3 hours from Quito. We were going to stay in Zumbuhua (14km away from the lake) but as soon as we arrived we were being hassled in that wonderful south american way... where they will tell you anything to use their taxi service. They said it was cheaper up by the lake... I´m not sure if that ... read more

Where do we start? Actually we´re not in Banos any longer but in Puyo, 1000 metres down in the Oriente (Ecuadorian Amazon basin) after evacuating! The volcano was rumbling around all day yesterday (it was hard to concentrate on our Spanish verbs while the windows rattled and the volcano roared). However, we were assured we were in no danger, and in fact were quite excited to go up and have a look at the activity from a safe distance. Just in case, when we went to bed we packed an emergency bag, which was just as well as two of us - Rosemarie and Gail - were dramatically rushed up another mountain at 1am with the rest of the town to spend the night. They crossed the only bridge, with people surging across on foot, with ... read more

Hello from Ecaudor! It´s been over a week since we got married now and everything seems to have rushed by. After arriving in Quito the capital city, we have gone straight to a town called Banos, nestled in a valley between soaring hills and a massive volcano. We have just found out that the Foriegn Office website states that Banos is the only place in Ecuador that tourists should avoid! The volcano erupts about 20 times a day sending huge bangs down the valley and firing huge plumes of ash into the sky. Our hotel is out of town half way up the volcano so we get a great view of it all. We are assured that the prevaling winds are blowing in the other direction, so that the clouds of poisionous gases will miss us. ... read more

Hola from Banos, a picturesque village nestled beneath the currently-active Tungurahua volcano. The surrounding countryside is lush and green, a bit like alpine Europe. It´s warmer, but with heaps of tourists: a sort of Queenstown but much tackier! It feels totally different from Otavalo, and we´re sorry to see hardly an indigenous costume anywhere. We´re finding our home stays much easier to understand, but perhaps that´s because they are both teachers, and we have 3 weeks experience! Perhaps something is getting through after all! The journey down was a bit longer than expected due to a blockade near Mt Cotopaxi. At first we were told it was a check for arms, and we looking forward to a body search. However, it was nothing more interesting than a bicyle race - which held us up for nearly ... read more
