Hi Everyone! We had a very adventurous day in Banos. The rain just wouldn't let up, so we got our hands on some fashionable rain gear. We rented 4-wheelers and set off to a town called Puyo. Near Puyo is the biggest waterfall in the area called Diablo, which is in the Amazon jungle. I can't believe we actually made it back. We had to drive on the road with the rest of the buses and cars. There are 3 tunnels on the way to the waterfall...the first we were supposed to go through and the other 2 we were supposed to go around on a side trail off of the road. I heard that the tunnel could be kinda scary, but I was not prepared for the heart-racing-black-as-night tunnel adventure! The first tunnel we went ... read more

well riobamba was a bit of a bust we were planning on going on the train ride called the nose of the devil but when we got to the station the train wasn´t there and we had no idea what was going on... later on we discovered that they are not allowing people to ride on the roof as two japanese tourists got decapitated a few months back.... yeah ew... and the buzz was that they are refiting the train to be a bit safer... yeah the first ´safety´ measure we have even heard about in SA... so we got out of riobamba quick... as there is little to do even when the train is running so we are in baños now... this town is pretty cool very laid back and lots to do... first day ... read more

Enduring this 7 hour journey was a true test of courage! We´d read many a story about nightmare journeys but assumed that these were all slightly exaggerated, until we encountered the bus ride to Baños. A hair-raising journey over the mountains, where the bus drivers raced each other along the mountain roads, overtaking each other round corners with sheer drops of hundreds of feet below. The conductors hanging out of the side doors egging each other on as they overtake! Absolutely insane! To top this we were thrown off our bus at our "scheduled" stop at the entrance to a roundabout for a quick change of bus any Formula One team would be proud of! A short, less stressful bus ride later we arrived in Baños, relieved and glad to have survived. We checked in to ... read more

Es gilt w... read more

Das heiße Wasser tat ... read more

So here we are entering week 3 and we are now in Banos which is a fairly large town in the central highlands. However we intend to move from here in the next day or so and head back up towards Cotopaxi and the Quiltoa Loop. Since our last report we have been to an area called Manabi that is on the west coast of Ecuador pretty much bang in the middle. We stayed at an ecotourism resort for a week that was right on the beach called Alandaluz (www.alandaluzhosteria.com). It was gorgeous and we were in a thatched hut situated on a hill above the beach so the view was magnificient. We shared the thatched hut with our hilarious Spanish instructor Manuel who was on a par with the fawlty towers persona! The deal ... read more

Hello All!! Sorry it´s been awhile, the jungle is very unaccomodating when it comes to internet connections. We do however, have power and hot hot hot water. Which leads to my next comment that the best shower I have had so far has been in the jungle! How awesome is that? So the cool thing about the jungle is that when it rains it rains extraordinarily more and more intensly than it does anywhere else. Imagine a helicopter droppinh gallons of water on you at one time....the sound is like thunder literally, and the quantity could drown someone stuck in a 6 foot hole, if they were my height. You can prepare for the rains by looking for low flying grey to black clouds. Once you have spotted them you have roughly 5 minutes to get ... read more

Beautiful drive to Baños. Very green with pine trees and eucalyptus. reminded us of New Zealand. It was rainy and misty as we entered volcano country, so we didn´t see any of the volcanoes. A few people on the truck started to feel unwell, including Pieter, so we were all happy when it was announced that we were just about there and a barbecue would be waiting for us at the campsite in Rio Verde. But then we came to a dead stop in the dark. There was a mudslide ahead that had descended from the volcano. Just a few minutes earlier we might have missed it or ended up going down the mountain side with the mud. Not too sure what to do we decided to wait. One hour turned into all night, which ... read more

I made it through the taller (workshop) unscathed and with many stories to tell. So, I guess I´ll jump right into the story of my 3-day adventure. The plan on Monday was for me to be picked up on the road near my apartment at 4:30 am. I got out there at 4:25 and waited for Pablo and Carolina, both work for Fundación Natura - Pablo is based in my office at CODEAMA and Carolina is based in Quito. Fundación Natura was the sponsor of the workshop. Now, I knew full well that they would be a little late - Ecuadorians always are, it is part of the culture here. They finally showed up at 4:55am. I got into the car and they said there was a problem. They forgot some documents in the CODEAMA office ... read more
