It’s 5 am and still dark. As usual I have managed to procrastinate sufficiently on writing this blog that it’s the day before we leave Quito and its got to be now or never. Never mind, as work colleagues will attest, dawn has always been a good time for me to be creative and /or productive dahlings, ever since getting up at this time to write overdue English essays on what I did over the summer or copy pictures from the Encyclopaedia Britannica for geography projects due at 9am that day. So here goes… Leaving Vilcabamba was tough and we had several crap days afterward struggling with travelling, buses, crummy hotels, bad weather and not enough people to talk to. But we withstood the storm (literally) and got to Baños - a quaint little town who’s ... read more

This is Jen calling! helloooo! yes, Baños is Spanish for Baths you know, and unlike Bath in Blighty, the water is heated by a very very active volcano. as if! We didnt have time or the stomach to head up to the crater to see the lava, but we prob will next time, when we can actually read the danger reports which are in Spanish. Sorry for no pics btw, this cafe doesnt have the bits we need. The craziest thing was the permanent smoke rising from the mountains around the volcano, it seemed like smoke but we hope it was just evaporation! And who would have thunk it; chilling on a volcano one day, then hop on a bus and head six hours downhill, past waterfalls at least 100 METRES high and in the words ... read more

Thursday 19th May 2005 : Goodbye Latacunga, Hello Banos Got up and left the Residencial Rieles without looking back. Had hoped to get breakfast nearby but all the places open seemed to double as greasy chicken joints and I walked past them all. Entering the bus terminal we were waved straight on to a bus for Banos, I thought. Once underway it became clear it was only going as far as Ambato where we could catch the Banos bus. Getting off the bus in Ambato the conductor showed us exactly where (just across the road) to pick up the Banos bus. As we reached the departure point there was a heated debate (by the conductors) about which was the best/next bus available. We were shepherded to a bus and sure enough it set off after a ... read more

Well, we survived the rainforest but we´re not sure the rainforest survived Beverlee! We stayed in a Jungle lodge ( see www.eljardinaleman.com ) where we were joined for breakfast by a family of Monkeys and a Parrot. We went on a Dugout canoe ride for 20 kilometres followed by a 3 hour trek through some primary rainforest. Some of us came back wetter than others, guess who fell in a stream and couldn´t get up for laughing? We swung through the trees Tarzan style on a creeper. We saw lots of different birds and butterflies, all sizes and colours. In the lodge where we were staying they had some animals which they had rescued, including a 10 foot long Boa Constrictor. On the way to the lodge we stopped for lunch in another lodge where we ... read more

Hi! Don't have a lot of time right now and haven't really thought this through, but given the current state of affairs in Ecuador thought I'd better write a few lines to let you know I'm safe! Got back from the Galapagos on Sunday (more on that later!) to read in the paper that Ecuador was under a State of Emergency. Then an hour later to read in a different newspaper that it had been called off. Either way there had apparently been riots in the streets, calling for the President to step down due to corruption scandals, etc, the usual South American political shenanigans. Didn't notice anything other than a lot of cars horns all night, but nothing unusual there. Either way decided to leave Quito asap and next morning came down to the relative ... read more

Alli left Quito for the Galapagos on Wednesday, so the first part of last week was mostly goodbye festivities. On Monday, we went out for Chinese food, then Sébas and Jorge took us on a night tour of Quito by car, which showed me how much more I want to explore by daylight. On Tuesday, we had a goodbye party for Alli / birthday party for Sébas at Jorge's apartment which lasted until morning (resulting in the first day that Julia or I have skipped school this entire trip). Alli left early Wednesay morning and we slept in......by evening we were feeling like ouirselves again and managed to meet Paul (from the Hostel Valhalla) and a friend of his for a couple hours since he was visiting Quito for the night. On Thursday afternoon, I decided ... read more

First forray into SA bus travel So, we met a girl called Mellisa at the Secret Garden and she was going to Baños that morning too; So we thought it would be a good idea to go together seeing how paranoid people get when talking about the Quito Terminal Terrestre (or Baghdad as some people would have you believe). Anyway, we managed to buy our tickets with our lives and possesions still intact (a miracle if you listen to some paranoid nancies). Well, a rather uneventful journey later and we arrived in Baños and found our Hostal, Plantos y Blanco (Plants and White) which seemed nice enough. Later we checked out the hot spring baths under the waterfall but decided against it due to the large number of local kids frolicking - early in the morning ... read more

I am now in the little town of Banos in Ecuador. As you would imagine, Ecuador is extremely lush and green and beautiful (and wet!). As soon as we crossed the border from Peru, the scenery changed from dry barren sand dunes to lush banana plantations by the coast, and cloud forest when we climbed in altitude. A couple of days ago we did a famous railway trip called the "Devil's Nose Railway", so-called because of the way it winds and double backs, and hangs precariously on the edge of a mountain. The best part is that you get to ride on top of the roof! The last two days have been pretty eventful as we went on a trip to the Amazon rainforest. It took about 5 hours to drive there, and on the way ... read more
