After taking a somewhat uncomfortable, seven hour bus ride, we arrived in Banos, one of the major vacation destinations in Ecuador. Situated at about 6000 ft, between the Andes and the Amazon, Banos is surrounded by lush, green cloud swept mountains, beautiful waterfalls, cloud forests and an active volcano (Tungurahua). The volcano erupted in 1999, the town was evacuated and set on red alert. There was never a big enough eruption to affect the town and the warning level was gradually lowered to an orange then yellow alert, and residents were allowed to return to their houses. It is said that if you go to a good vantage point on a clear night, you can see lava spitting out of the volcano like fireworks. Sadly it was too cloudy while we were there to get a ... read more

This morning we were up relatively early for all of us bar Kasia to go canyoning. Canyoning is basically a way of getting from the top of a river to the bottom in an extreme fashion, so much abseiling, zip lining and unnecessary jumping ensued. With one slight problem. I have no sense of balance as some of you well know. So on the first abseiling bit, I slipped and fell after about 2 steps. I managed to get back up, before slipping and falling to the side, too close to the edge and a 30 foot drop for my liking. I lay there for a bit, crapping my pants whilst the guide shouted obsceneties at me in Spanish and told me to put my hands on the rope. My hands were on the rope, but ... read more

Arrived at our campsite just outside Baños last night at 10.30 after yet another puncture en route. And possibly the most bizarre border crossing - you have to drive about 20 miles into Ecuador before they bother to stamp you into the country. This morning, Team Peache were out in force (well Steve, Lynette and myself were) for a spot of white water rafting. These were grade 3-4 rapids and better than the rafting we did in Salta. It was made especially good because we managed to catch a chicken on the way which was stuck on the riverbank. Afterwards we had a 'delicious' lunch consisting of chicken feet soup. Yum. Because we were late back from the rafting I managed to miss the food shop, thus leaving it all up to Ross. However, he surprisngly ... read more

HI all. Didn´t realise it had been quite so long since last blog but guess time flies when you´re having fun!! Plus considerable amounts of dodgy internet connections get a bit wearing after a while! Following on from the fantastic Copan Ruians we headed across Honduras to the Carribean coast to spend a couple of blissful days soaking up the sunshine on Roatan island. With a hotel in a fantastic location right on the beach, pool overlooking the sea it was a fantastic place to recharge the batteries, although was not especially restful due to the plethora of activites offered. Snorkelling with dolphins (playing catch with them and sea gras was especially entertaining!) was absolutely fascinating, as was having the opportunity to get a couple of introductory dives in amidst the surrounding reef. Sadly due to ... read more

Since leaving Quito, we´ve travelled into the Amazon jungle and have now moved to Banos, a town with thermal springs that sits at the foot of an active Volcano. Ecuador has proven to be a really pleasant surprise - I came out here with few expectations but the scenary is stunning - we´ve travelled through high mountain passes, steep forested gorges, past waterfalls, and through parts of the amazon jungle. The communities that we pass are also fascinating. Most buildings are shacks made out of whatever is available - wood, concrete, tin, plastic etc. Most look unfunished but they are relatively well made. We´re travelling in a massive bright yellow truck so we get a few people looking at us. Also we travel on some very narrow roads and quite a few bridges have been washed ... read more

So after my recent conversion to Vegohood, I found myself in a Govindas restaurant in Quito where a giant poster advertised a yoga eco lodge, featuring photos of bare chested young men drumming under waterfalls and requesting volunteers. Vrndivan is a planet you can go with a REALLY good KARMA ticket and there is Krsna God living with his Gopis (woman) and its all very beautiful and no one dies. Its also the name of the community that I arrive in a few days later which is between mountains and jungle. After arriving I am asked if I´m a vegetarian by everyone I meet and having the extent and length of my vegetarianism investigated. My friend Ariel has been vego since the age of 13 so they are ready to initiate her right there and then, ... read more

Hola everyone! Sorry it has been a while since my last entry, all of the other students from a different program have had huge papers to write so computers have been taken all week. But this will be a fun entry now! On Friday morning my host mom, Gladys, took Sarah, Nicole and I down to the trolly and rode with us to the bus station. Then, she went with us to buy tickets to Baños and thank goodness she was there because she asked so many questions that we would have never even thought to ask. ´She kept asking, are you positive that this bus goes directly to Baños? No extra stops? We want a direct bus!´ Then she went and got a policeman to confirm that the bus went directly to Baños and got ... read more

With our great experience on Cotopaxi behind us, we headed South-East from Latacunga towards the town of Baños, famous for its hot baths. The volcano theme to Ecuador continues however, as Baños´hot baths are warmed by the fact it is perched on a massive smouldering volcano. Considering that it errupted only last year doesn´t seem to put off its inhabitants, so being intrepid as we are, we decided a couple of nights there would be a good stop-off. The bus journey was spectaucular if a bit death-defying. Kate´s decision to try and sleep was the better one. I just sat staring with glazed eyes as the driver pelted it around blind bends on the wrong side of the road with a 300m drop to our left, thinking to myself "He thinks this is just a game, ... read more
