Well a quick update for all you people back at home. Thursday the 1st was a total washout in Baños - felt like I was back in England with the amount of rain there was - it literally rained all day apart from a 2 hour window of cloudiness. So I decided to have a lazy day - did a bit of my teaching english course and then spent a couple of hours at the hot baths which are outdoors so it was quite cool being submerged in 32oC water when it was raining!! Was not totally peaceful as my visit coincided with a 40 children strong school trip!! However, there was one advantage of the rain on Thursday and that was for whitewater rafting on Friday - yeay!! As it had rained so much the ... read more

After a few too many Mojito cocktails the night before we all got up and Andrea and me went for a steam bath in the hostel. Basically, you sit in a wooden box and turn up the steam until you can take no more! Several of these sessions interspersed with being towelled and hosed down with cold water is supposed to help your skin and detox you - don´t know if it did that but it was damn nice anyway and the guy jet washed some on my bruises which I am covered in at the moment and they are disappearing now! We then had breakfast and were chatting to Jen and Kevin an Irish couple we had met the night before. We decided to attempt the Baños to Puyo bike ride - 60km of supposedly ... read more

Hey guys and gals Finally I have chance to write a bit about what I´ve been up to since I left good old Blighty. After 15 hours or so of flying I landed in Quito and promptly went off to the Secret Garden - my first hostel. Was really nice there met loads of nice people and the next day headed off with a girl I met called Hannah to Las Palmas - 3 hours from Quito on the bus. Before this I committed a mare and decided it would be a good idea to leave my card in the cash machine!! I know doom! Combination of rushing for a bus and 15 hours of flying the day before so I had to leg it back to the bank see if my card was there (luckily ... read more

More photos for your delectation! Horseriding was great - Hannah hadn´t done it since she was 13 so we were hoping to take it easy but in true Ecuadorian gaucho style we set off at a full pelt gallop with me feeling slightly guilty and hoping she would be ok. Wasn´t like that the whole way - just most of it! We were probably the nuisance of all the villages we galloped through - Ecuadorian equivalent of Boy Racers on Southend sea front. The guide Wilson was on a very fast horse and I kept trying to race him - unfortunately Rocillo just couldn´t cut the mustard! The horses were really well looked after and we got back to some food and also chatting to Marcello (4 years old who I put a photo up of) ... read more

This weekend I am in Baños. For those of you who know spanish, yes it means bathrooms! It is named that because of the thermal baths that are everywhere. The town is at the bottom of a volcano so that´s how they are heated. The town is beautifu! Tonight Kyle and I are going to see the volcano on a trolley and tomorrow we are going horseback riding to see the waterfalls. This week has been a little hard because we had a squirrel monkey and a cappuchin monkey die. I cried my eyes out when I saw the squirrel monkey die. It was so human like. The cappuchin that died was Kyle´s favorite, the same one that pulled my hair. On a lighter note I got my nose pierced and we took a cappuchin monkey, ... read more

Hello all, Well first of all I would like to say goodbye to a wonderful friend of mine, Cindy Arrens, who recently passed from a long but well fought battle with cancer. She will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enought to have met her, myself being, in no way, an exception to that. Goodbye Cindy, we will all miss you very much. As for me I have finally left Quito for good after a sad goodbye with the friends from my hostel. It sure was a great month but it is good to be on the road again. I am travelling with a British friend, Tessa, although our plans have changed a little bit. Right now I am in Banos, a touristy little town about an hour from Rio Bamba (my original destination) to ... read more

First two bits of exciting news. The first is that Joe, my long awaited travel partner, is in fact coming to Ecuador on February 22nd for a long time (perhaps permanently). I am very excited that he is coming and that I will finally be able to do some real, hardcore camping. Rock on. We are talking about volunteering at a surf school in northern Peru, but as I have seen these things are destined to change. The second bit of news is that Lev-Co, my former employer, has given me a large-ish contract that I am going to be able to work on from here on my terms (to a certain extent). This means that I will for sure be going to the Galapagos pretty soon, although it also means that I am going to ... read more

While I was in Quito, I decided to visit the Museum of Natural History. It was pretty much a bust. The displays were falling apart, and were not very informative. I did use the library to look up what that little amarillo creature was. I think it was an Andean Porcupine, but there was no picture, so who knows? One interesting thing at the museum was that among many deserved slots, Walt Disney was featured on their wall of "Important Men of Science." He was honored for his great animation of animals and the natural world. Hmmm. And not one woman was among them. Well, after much indecision, I ultimately decided to head to Baños for a few days. Baños is a laidback vacation destination for gringos and Ecuadoreans alike. It was nice. The town gets ... read more

We arrived at Baños without a hitch, which is a good thing given that the Foreign Office suggest that you don't go there. What do they know, eh? It turns out that Baños is a nice, chilled little tourist town nestling between a big grumbly volcano and some pretty mountains. All good really, as we weren't in the mood for ANY walking after our Quilotoa adventure. Not for a couple of days anyway. We plodded around town and checked into the very welcoming Hostal Llantoventos, on a hill overlooking Baños. I have no idea how we failed to notice the steepness of the hill it was on whilst carrying all of our stuff, but fail to notice we did. That came later when walking home from the pub. In Baños though we felt instantly at home. ... read more
