Hey everyone, Sorry for such a large gap in between entries but i've been extremely busy the past week since I went to banos, and the other is before Banos there was nothing exciting to talk about. My first weekend away from the farm was freakin rockin! I hopped on a bus thursday night and rode three hours south to the turist city of banos, Yes the same city that nearly got eaten alive by a volcano only a few weeks back. Banos is in a valley surrounded by lush mountain side all the way around. People come here for the adventure sports they offer and the fine international cuisine, I for one was no different. I wanted to do some rafting, biking etc. while eating pizza and a good burger at night. I arrived to ... read more

Decided being the daredevils we are to go white water rafting down the river in Baños. Set off around 9.15 with a group of 6 others. After about 20K we arrived at the start point to find a large contingent of the army practicing jumping off bridges. Got changed in open air huts (seperate boy and girl ones thank god!) and got set to go with our Brazilian guides David and Marcio who spoke hardly any English (eek!). With some basic instructions understood among us (i.e. forward means paddle forward, back, paddle back, forward twice means paddle fast) we got going. All went well, we hit a couple of rapids, we all squealed as we got drenched. Got to another rapid and Mike and I and another girl disappeared off the side! Fun you might think ... read more

Hired a couple of dodgy mountain bikes and cycled down the valley of the waterfalls. First 7k wasn´t very enjoyable. We soon realised we´d be cycling most of the route on a major road. The gears were stiff on Amy´s bike and her chain kept jamming. Slight adjustment using my penknife helped the latter. We´d been told that there were several tunnels through the mountains, each having an alternative route for bikes. However, the first of these did not. It was dark, water poured from the ceiling and the road surface was wet and muddy. Luckily no vehicles passed us in the tunnel, we just got covered in water/mud. When we reached the first waterfall (pictured) our moods improved. It was quite spectacular, falling into the valley below. We paid a dollar each to be ferried ... read more

First full day in Banos we decided to walk up the hillside with Becky and Tim to Bella Vista - a good vantage point to see the town and the nearby active volcano "Tungurahua". The notice board in the hostal warned of a recent mugging on the same route. It described how an old lady had acted as a look out and to beware if seeing one. A later addition to this report by another guest said the walk was fabulous and no trouble. At the entrace to the path a policeman was hanging around. After 5 minutes walking we overtook an old lady, probably aged around 75, draging a small bush up the steep slope. We got a little nervous - I grabbed a rock to defend myself!! Nothing happened and we settled into a ... read more

It was sad to leave the Secret Garden as we've had a great time and met loads of interesting people. However, we were both ready to move on. The taxi to the bus station in Quito dropped us at a nearby roundabout - thanks. We wandered around not knowing where to go until an Ecuadorian familily who were also heading to Banos showed us where to wait. We had been warned that the bus station was a hotbed of crime so kept our bags close. After about 40 minutes a bus arrived and we stored our rucksacs underneath and boarded. A man walked down the bus counting people. I was sat on the opposite side to Amy checking our rucksacs were safe. I was instructed to take my actual seat and the man confirmed our destination ... read more

Hi there! I started to write this blog in Baños (a small holiday town in the south of the high Sierra) on Sunday, but events overtook me and now I am in Quito, waiting to go to the Galapagos islands very early tomorrow morning. It all seems a bit surreal, as I can´t let myself believe I am really going until I get there... So, what have I been up to recently? As I mentioned above, I spent last weekend in Baños with six other volunteers from La Hesperia. We left on Friday evening and spent Saturday cycling towards Puyo, 60km away along a beautiful road that follows a river with lots of waterfalls. The views were amazing, and we had great fun, stopping to admire the waterfalls and eat our lunch. But most of us ... read more
