San Agustin is the self-proclaimed Archeological City of Colombia and indeed it is home to some very impressive pre-Columbian tombs and statues, but in this case it was getting to San Agustin where the real excitement lay. On Wednesday morning Mark and I left the safety of the brand new Scottish-run hostel in the tranquil colonial town of Popayan for a rough adventure to in search of pre-colonial history. The next 7 hours was a hair-raising, heart-racing, bowel-loosening adventure on what can safely be described as the worst road i have ever travelled on. I mean i have travelled on earth roads before but at least in those cases the government had the decency to flatten the road, here the road was made up of stones sticking out of the ground which made you bump up ... read more

Just crossed the border by foot! Left Ecuador, stood waiting for my Colombian visa, handed over my passport, dude looks at it for a while and then asks me if Im from Nothern Ireland or Southern Ireland! I wasnt really expecting this so was a little flustered in my response, but realising the reason, I tell him that although I was born in Belfast, its a passport from the Republic. He then, picks up the phone then buggers off for 10 mins with my passport. If you are not aware, Irelands profile or more exactly N.Irelands profile has been front page news in Columbia over the last number of years due to 3 alleged ecotourists/IRA guys being arrested for training FARC rebels. They were banged up for 2-3 years on trial, then jumped bail! Irish had ... read more

Montezuma’s revenge is anything but pleasant. Well how it happened was, on Thursday I stayed up until almost 3 am talking. On Friday had to wake up earlyto go to the beach, around 9. In the morning I was horribly fatigued my head ached, my stomached roared, the goose bumps ran up and down my arms, and I felt nauseous. When we go to the beach I found a cabana and I laid down all day. After the beach, was when the toilet became my friend, because if it wasn’t from one end it was from the other. I got a fever, my stomach swirled and it continued all night. Unfortunately, I couldn’t fully enjoy my last day in san Andres. Saturday we left San Andres, my pain all over continued…it was a nice looong flight. ... read more

ORIENTATION The city is laid out in a simple grid system and streets can be identified by the intensity of the smell of urine. Unique cracks in the pavement filled with rotting food or human faeces provide a more detailed indicator of your location. If you need to get to the market, follow the trail of rubbish along the ground and as the smell of septicemia itensifies you know you are getting close. PEOPLE AND CULTURE Santa Marta prides itself on posessing more prostitutes per capita than the rest of South America. The silicon assisted beauties ply their trade over bannisters and bars. Stiletto heels click on the pavement and breasts announce their arrival long before the rest of their body. Pouting ladyboys in tight midriffs and denim skirts blow kisses from the curb. Their muscular ... read more

Two hours from Cali on the heavily militarised Buenaventura road sit several uninspiring wooden shacks. Yet behind this seemingly dull facade lies the magical village of San Cipriano. Its just over the crystal clear river and down a set of disused train tracks. As we (Mark, Darragh and I) got off the bus we were greeted by the young athletic Oscar who led us over a rope bridge to a set of train tracks. But here the trains don't run anymore, in fact they don't run anywhere in Colombia, and the villagers of San Cipriano were plunged back into isolation in the jungle. That is until some smart villagers of San Cipriano invented an ingenious new method of transport which i have dubbed the "MotoTrain" as i don't actually know what it is called. The MotoTrain ... read more

Another day in the beatuiful city of medellin. My sisters godfather invited us to have lunch, and to spend the day shopping with him. He took me to a jewlary store in medellin where they make jewlary out of animals horns. Doesnt sound pleasan but the jewlary is acutally very beautiful. there he had me pick out a set, so that he could purchase it for me. well after that we left to Botero}s musem. El Aquario is national protected wildlife area. It’s two very small islands in the middle of the ocean that are connected through a sandbar. We woke up early and ate breakfast; breakfast is a buffet style all you can eat. After breakfast out tour guide was waiting. He directed everyone to follow him he was going to take us to where the boats where launched. The place where the boats are launch is guarded by gates inside the gates there’s wooden benches to the left with people sitting down. And vendors to the right selling water shoes, and snorkel gear. We took a seat amongst the many sitting down. Soon enough there was many walking through the isle selling beaded necklaces, and bracelets ‘’yelling courtesy look.’’ After about half hour of sitting there stair at the ... read more

Andes is another small town, that surrounds Medellin. My dad was born there, and my cousin sandra's family lives there. In Andes her family has serval coffee farms. We left with Beatriz, sandra's mom early saturday august 11, towards Andes. The road to Andes has serval pot holes, and it's not fully paved. There was also sections were we had to wait for several minutes while people cleared the road, because rocks from the mountain fell along the road, and blocked traffic. Arrving in Andes we were immediately greeted by Beatrìz' dad, wh invited us to take a seat in the towns park. The park is the center of the town, more or less the place everyone hangs out. August 10,2007 we spent the day in a small town located on the outskirts on medellin. Recently the highway towards San Jeronimo was remodeled and they now have a 10 mile long tunnel, shortening the drive to about 45 minutes versus 2 hours. We spent the day in a newly opened water park. But for Colombians a water park, is merely a few pools and some restaurants. It did present the opportunity to tan! About 2 hours there, arrived a school bus with elementary kids. Soon enough I was surrounded with about 30 small children. All of which were fascinated by my tattoos, piercing, scar, and nails. And man as soon as they found out I was from USA I had 30 small friends, that all wanted to swim with me. We left the pools at ... read more
