South America » Colombia » San Agustin September 10th 2007

The story so far..... I will simply say that Colombia is a must do for any travellers in SA, forget the crap you read on dangers etc, it no worse than any other country. A lot of this negative hipe seems to come from US media, which firstly being US media, will have little impartiality and is also intended to deter US citizens from visiting the country. This is definitely obvious, compared with the amount of USAers in Equador, and is a welcome change! So anyway, after a night or 2 in Popayan, a beautiful colonial era town, with the unfortuneate draw back of having every street look the same, because thats what colonial towns do, I have set off for a place called San Agustin. This is known for artifacts of indiginous people predating the ... read more

Hiking through the jungle, white sand beaches, stomach problems, nomads, hippies, vanilla skies and lightning storms..i.e. my first encounter of one of Colombia's biggest natural attractions: Parque Nacional Tayrona. I knew about Colombia's natural beauty, I heard of Parque Tayrona but I didn't have any idea of what to really expect. First off Tayrona park is enormous. I only spent one night there when usually people spend at least 4-5 days. So, I'm sure I'll me making another visit again. The journey starts with a short road trip east of Santa Marta with my new friends Antonio, Diego, Kathy and her 4 year old son Salva. This time of year Santa Marta is a sweltering hot zone where the humidity and heat gets the best of you but as soon as you go east you notice ... read more

Have had three beers and Cartagena is looking even better than it did yesterday when I arrive from the airport.Read the 26 tips for Cartagena tourists and almost did not come. I am thinking that this is a bit beyond common sense and borders on to fear mongering. Google it and see what you think. This man is writing travel books. Will never read one of his tomes. The Hostel Santo Domingo is clean and friendly. New York and Cardin the two little tiny dogs that are the same breed as Riley down the road from where I liver in Canada welcomed me. The lady at the hostel told me to go to the Bistro for food but I was corralled at the square in front of the Museum of the Inquisition. Paid 48.000 pesos for ... read more

Hi all, hope this finds you all well. As you have probably guessed we have made it to south america. Sounds easy dosent it? Well i wasn´t! We decided to take the road less traveled and make our way to Columbia by flying to a remote Panamaian boarder town on the Carribean coast and catch a series of small boats to the first major Columbian city. I sounded easy enough until we arrived at the boarder town (viallage) but without my pack. Usually not a big issue but there were only 3 flights a week and its not accessable by road so we were suck! We werent the only ones. A Chezc who didn´t seem to like wearing his pants all that much was in the same provebial boat. 3 other traveles also got delaýed for ... read more

South America » Colombia » Medellin September 3rd 2007

I have been in the country of my birth for 3 weeks now, seventeen years after I left and had not returned. I have travelled all throughout Medellin, city where I made my home for the first eight years of my life, and to Bogota to visit my special someone, Janneth. I have heard stories from all possible family members, some of which I did not know existed. I have cried and laughed, and had nostalgic memories that I did not know exist flood my mind. I have drank aguardiente like water with individuals throughout the cities that I have been to, washed down with beer. I drove through the same mountains where my father died in a bus accident; the same curve. My travels through Mexico and my country will soon follow, along with those ... read more

Cartagena pulsates with a rhythm unlike any other. As I stood on the balcony of our lustful hotel, couples made out on the couch in the darkened loungeroom while they waited for rooms that were rented by the hour. Across the road, pimps hawked the scantily clad young girls outside the door of a conspicuous brothel. Along the path, a man sat on the sidewalk and worked on smashing open a safe. No one paid him any attention. Below, backpackers waited amongst piles of garbage for a room. Narrowly saving their washing from being scooped up by the garbage men. On the corner, two men stand with a hotdog stand. One has coffee in a thermos and sells a cup of the over sweetened brew for $1. In the square, a mime torments passerbys with his ... read more

We landed at El Dorado International airport in Bogota at 8:30pm We are finally here! After months of waiting I am in Colombia! Me and my friends, Sam, AJ and Yune were all excited! Our friends in Bogota, Daniel and Alejandra picked us up. We checked in at the Casablanca Hotel Casablanca Hotel which is near the Zona Rosa area. its a very nice hotel, in a very nice area. The staff was very friendly. Its about $35 USD per night. I highly recommend this place. Its walking distance from restaurants, banks, and shops. We unpack and got ready for the night while Daniel and Alejandra waited for us in the lobby. We took a taxi to Zona Rosa. Wow, this place is amazing! There were so many trendy restaurants, bars, clubs. It reminded me of ... read more

Sunday day of rest my ass, more like only day the maid doesn’t come and I have to pick up after myself. I am rife with gray hairs. I spotted one on my arm the other day and its physical removal has done nothing to mute the knowledge of its existence. Out there floating in the wind, a banner to my aging. I made it safely back from the US, and brought something with me that most people take the opposite direction, a terrible case of the runs. George Washington's Revenge as it's known. It was nice to be home and hang out although I missed some people (I apologize). My niece is getting more entertaining every time I see her and I only wrecked one car. All and all a success story to rival Rocky ... read more
