I've become a mountain man. I recently for the first time tamed and rode a Nor'easter to town. I have been certainly secluded in and loving the mountains. Since I left school I went to Piero's bday party at a gun range in Bogota where all the posters of the bad guys have mustaches (confirming suspicions). I touched the inside of a hippo's mouth, saw a baby Andean spectacled bear (rarest bear in the world). I've been woken up in the middle of the night by an earthquake. While riding my “mountain horse” in said mountains, it lost it's footing, flipped over backwards while climbing a particularly steep rocky incline, narrowly avoided smashing me as I was fortunantly thrown clear (by about 2 inches). It is now off mountain duty. I love the fact that ... read more

A trip to ancient Tayrona Indians’ Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) is more like a journey to another world. It’s an intense 6-day uphill trek that can only be described as unique. On the way up through seemingly boundless dense rainforest one can easily why this country is such an easy place for guerillas to hide. Fortunately, this is now one of the areas that are back in the control of the Colombian government, and the various army posts along the way ensure that the chances of you running into trouble are small. Along the path, as well as on the actual site of the old civilization’s city (which no doubt must have played some part in the inspiration of the Indiana Jones movies), there are still indigenous Indians living pretty much the same as they did ... read more

After a really brief time in Venezuela we returned to Colombia. From the bus station we caught a bus to San Christobel, arriving in the rain and having trouble finding a car to take us over the boarder, no one wanted to take us over because we had to stop for passport stamps. Eventually a young chap said he would take us for 60,000, (about $20) probably the price of a full car load. He was very good and took us through to San Antonio, another confusing city with the boarder control in a street that is way away from the boarder and you would never find it on your own. Here we had to pay 40,000 each to leave the country. We had to pay this across the road from the passport office, we had ... read more

We tried to make it to the Venezuelan boarder but time and the heat prevented it. We found a hotel, near to where the collectivos leave for the boarder. The earliest one left at 6 am so planned to be on that one. We went for a walk around town and found the ocean. We walked out onto a pier that went out for ages. There were boats tied up at the end and kids fishing. It was like Tologa except it was made of wood, it was much cooler out at the end. Looking back at land the beach was covered in coconut trees and really looked beautiful. Walking back to the hotel we came across something going on. It turned out to be a funeral so we walked through the crowd into a plaza ... read more

South America » Colombia » Santa Marta » Taganga July 2nd 2007

We managed to find our way to Taganga, a small fishing viallage that is taken over by holidaymakers and tourists. Rather like when we lived in Taupo, you left home during the holiday season because it went crazy. Our transport included a taxi to the bus station, the taxi driver had no idea what our Spanish meant and he finally figured out our hand gestures and the odd word in the dictionary. We then managed to find a bus to Santa Marta, we passed alot of low lying homes with water everywhere - possibly from the down pour we had the night before, I hope no homes were flooded. There were mangrove swamps and mixed jungle farms and some cattle farms. We again got to the right destination and found our next transport, a collectivo to ... read more

We have done some sightseeing around Cartagena by boat and Chiva and bus. Every trip was enjoyable and showed another facet of this really lovely place. Our first trip was by boat to an aquarium and beach. There were dolphins sharks, many types of large fish, sea turtles and tropical fish. The aquarium had walkways around the ocean that was fenced off for the creatures. I believe the dolphins could have jumped out if they wanted to. The guides threw fish to show us how they snapped them up and swam for food. The dolphins did a bit of a show. It truly was a lovely setting. Some of the islands we passed by were very tiny and had homes on them that covered them in total. Not a spare inch of land left. I don't ... read more

Our overnight bus arrived about 9.30 am and we caught a taxi through a frenzy of traffic, donkey carts and people. Along the way some people banged on the taxi and were yelling, we didn't know what was happening, but the driver just sped off and then Paul said someone had been run over. It we had stopped we could have taken the person to hospital but we were well passed before we realised what was happening. It made me very sad to think the driver ignored those people. This place is really hot, we sweat like anything. It is very warm at night and we need no blankets, in fact the hostel does not have any. We dropped off our packs and went out for a walk along the top of the defensive walls of ... read more

After standing on the Equator for a good few hours we didn´t spend much time in Ecuador but hot footed it over to Colombia. Despite getting stuck in the middle of violent student protests and accidently staying in a red-light district, Bogota was an amazing place and home to the friendliest people in the world. Fact. Next, the coastal town of Cartagena which was beautiful and ridiculously, ridiculously hot. Not able to fork out for the luxury of air-con we had to sleep under the shower everynight. We met up with some friends Kristen and Dawn (who we met in the Galapagos) and decided we would all get a sail boat to take us across the Carribean sea to Panama as an adventurous alternative to flying. An adventure it was but not really in a ... read more

well not much to write about galapagos continued to be awesome more snorkelling etc... and after 8 days on a boat it was time for us to get off and stagger towards the plane on our sealegs... we flew into quito and quickly went to the bus station and were off to tulcan which is in northern ecuador near the colombian boarder... we spent a night there in a super cheep but fairly sketchy hostel and the next day cabbed to the boarder... on the ecuador side we waited for about 2 hours to get our exit stamps as the computers were down and they didn´t feel like processing by hand so when we eventually got them done we walked over the bridge to colombia which was a breeze... form the boarder town of ipiales we ... read more
