We awoke to a cloudy sky and the ship coping with a 2m swell. Walking around was not too bad but there was some rocking and rolling. It was a full day at sea on our way to Colombia. We had a late breakfast and read and relaxed until Trivia at 12 noon. Our ladies from New York failed to join us but we managed 12/15 on our own and were only one off the winners.Another quiet afternoon before drinks in the Atrium at 6pm. I am enjoying being able to read and relax without having to worry about cooking and housework! We ate in The Restaurant, after chatting to other passengers at the bar and had a lovely dinner. Not the most exciting day but one to enjoy nevertheless. On Wednesday morning we repeated our routine, ... read more

After leaving our favourite place in Colombia, Capurgana, and leaving a sad Paco behind, we had to push on and continue our travels along the north coast, besides there was still lots to look forward to. Yes, we're going back in to the past for a moment to when we left Capurgana and took a boat and bus to get to a place called Tolu. We came here to base ourselves for a day trip to the San Bernardo islands which consists of several islands bathing in the warm waters of the Caribbean. We took a boat to the island of Murcura, latching on to a group who were doing a day tour from Cartagena. We had several hours on the small island and somehow found ourselves soaking up the sun on a quiet stretch (besides ... read more

Day 1 in the sun saw quotes such as “it doesn’t feel too hot” “I’ve definitely felt hotter sun than this” “ I’m worried I won’t get a tan” please see attached photo of Hayley looking much like Love Island’s Alex After Pineapplegate, today’s choices were imperative. Found a place to watch the football, headed back to the pool. El balcón provided us with 241 strawberry margaritas with a view over San Diego square. One would always expect a Michael Jackson impersonator as entertainment Along with Spider-Man too of course. There was also some brilliant singing and dancing giving the square a tremendous atmosphere. A storm and a power cut the next morning I thought was a sure sign England would lose. But in the spirit of being with my English friend, I “promised” to support ... read more

Oscar our personal taxi driver took us to the airport, giving us our last views (albeit in rally style) of Medellín. Absolutely fantastic place but ready for some new landscape. I required 4 large red wines at the airport, building up to the “bumpiest flight ever” which turned out to be as smooth as peanut butter, and just the poor guy next to me who had sweaty palms. On arrival in Cartagena we admired the beautiful streets briefly, but had some priorities: - Quickly change into “cossies” (Hayley language) - Get a cold drink and go to the pool - Catch up on Love Island - The prospect of Boris Johnson arriving in the villa was too exciting. Unfortunately, the pool was being cleaned but we headed to our terrace for a cold beer. The travelling ... read more

On Wednesday, May 23rd, the Sailing Koala arrived to Cartagena. After breakfast and last goodbyes, Patrick, Ingrid and I shared a taxi to our hostels ; it was super small and I had to squeeze myself and all my luggage on the passenger seat because there was no space in the back, but well, it worked. :-) My hostel, the One Day Hostel, was located in a great area, calm, but close to the historical center and to Plaza de la Trinidad. The staff there was super friendly and let me have a shower even before check-in time. This was absolutely needed after 30 hours on the boat... 5 days without internet also meant half an hour checking all my emails, Whatsapp messages and Facebook... When I was done, I went to Patricks and Ingrids hostel, ... read more

Mittwoch, den 23. May, kam die Sailing Koala in Cartagena an.

Casa En El Agua 23/04/18-25/04/18 Booked months ago, it was now time for our eagerly awaited trip to the incredible and unique, House On The Water. A solar-powered, eco-friendly, paradise island hostel in the middle of the Caribbean ocean in San Bernardo National Park, two hours by speed boat from Cartagena. After the exhilarating boat ride (with dolphin sightings!), we had an initial tour around El Casa, including important bathroom instructions - they have special composting toilets, with a separate hole for #1 and #2! If you’re confused, there’s hilarious pictures and details on the doors that show you how it’s done... "just sit well". We were also allowed one bucket of fresh, clean water per person per day to shower. As you can see in the photos, El Casa is made up of two floors.. ... read more

Cartagena 16/04/18-23/04/18 Due to terrible Colombian WiFi and painfully slow hostel computers, most of this blog has been written 4 times.. please bare this in mind :) According to my trusty Lonely Planet, Cartagena is "the undisputed queen of the Caribbean coast, a fairy-tale city of romance, legends and superbly preserved beauty lying within an impressive 13km of centuries-old colonial stone walls. The Old Town is a Unesco World Heritage site – a maze of cobbled alleys, balconies covered in bougainvillea, and massive churches that cast their shadows across leafy plazas". Some of you may know the prize-winning Novellist, Gabriel García Márquez. Márquez arrived in Cartagena in 1948 as a penniless student from Bogotá and was inspired and influenced by this charming city in much of his work. We spent one week (that is a long ... read more

"This room is not fit for humans! I can't sleep. Can't you hear that?" I awake to a verbal onslaught of unfounded accusations. I don't hear anything. Oh. Yes. I hear the faint intermittent moan of a fog horn, the constant hum of the engines keeping the ship moving along with ocean water massaging the steel hull of our vessel as it slices through in the middle of the night. All sounds one might expect when on a ship at sea. I was sound asleep. Looking out our stateroom window I can make out a full moon, low on the horizon and partly obscured in fog. Fog? I turn to her, my responses to all her rants at the ready, only to find her fast asleep. Now it takes me some time to fall back asleep ... read more
