Back in Puerto Natales we decided to continue the relaxation that we’d begun the day before so we had a lazy day. Unfortunately if you send a package to NZ with FedEx you have to fill out various stupid sets of forms. The thing that is so idiotic is that it is not necessary to fill out these same forms if you just send the items through the post. So we had to waste a number of hours tracking down a place where we could printout these forms, fill them out, get them scanned, and then e-mail them back to FedEx in NZ. 03/02/2011 - Day 17 We caught the bus back to El Calafate. Fortunately the Chileans aren’t as concerned about people leaving as they are about people arriving and so the border crossing was ... read more

8:30am and we’re on the bus to Puerto Natales in Chile. The land outside is barren, A dry muddy green colour that stretches on for mile after mile after mile. Only a few stunted shrubs break the monotony of the landscape by boldly daring to stick their dark green almost black arms to the sky, screaming “look at me” And so I’m using this time to catch up on my blog again, at this point it still just remains a document on this laptop. (Okay a small jump to the future, it is now the 12th of Feb, and I’ve actually published some of this, so now to try and finish writing it.) The bus ride to Puerto Natales is fairly dreary, a bus trip is after all only a bus trip and with unchanging scenery ... read more

We had a fabulous if not fairly challenging few days in the Torres del Paine national park. We set off to complete a particular circuit in the park (the W!) with 45 litre rucksacks filled with food for 4 nights, clothes and sleeping bags. It was our plan to camp every night, there are a series of refuges on the circuit where you can either sleep inside in a dorm or outside in a hired tent. After a bus journey into the park we found a tent for the first night and then walked about 20kms round trip to see the famous Torres of the park. We were warned about the strength of the wind in the park which turned out to be unlike anything we had experienced before, it was enough to lift you off ... read more

The main purpose of going to Puerto Montt was to get on the Navimag ferry which would take us south through the Patagonia Fjords over 3 nights and 4 das and ultimately to Puerto Natales from where we would begin walking in the Torres del Paine national park. Puerto Montt itself is not very picturesque and we managed to see all of it in the late afternoon and evening we arrived, it has a fish market where we managed to find a tasty dinner of locally caught fish overlooking the sea. We were due to leave the port at 2pm the next day but when we arrived to check our baggage in at 9am that morning the they informed us that the boat was delayed and we wouldn't be leaving until 5pm. This left us with ... read more

... read more

WOW. We´re speachless, but will try our best to put into words what a fantastic experience we´ve had in Patagonia. We left Puerto Natales for Torres del Paine and hiked ¨the grand circuit¨over a period of 9 days. This voyage circumnavigates the best parts of this national parque. We saw everything from meadows to the largest glacier in South America, to the Torres del Paine, which are 2-3,000 ft granite batholiths that pierce the sky. There is usually very unpredictable weather, including rain and random snow. We experienced the opposite. Every day was sunny and spectacular. We spent Christmas, Mom´s birthday, and el Año Nuevo in the park. We met great folks along the trail, a few of which paralleled our journey. Here is a list of things that happened to us along the way: 1. ... read more

Feliz Navidad! We have had quite the journey since we updated you last. There was a tango lesson/show in buenos aires that was amazing. We got dressed up and went out for a night on the town! It was the most incredible dancing we´ve ever seen. Ladies legs swung swiftly through men's thighs. Partners swung eachother around at rates that g-forces were jealous of. We met some cool folks from Europe. One lady didn´t speak english or spanish was a translator of three other slavic dialects and was super fun. In other news, we took a 52 hour bus ride through eastern argentina, which it turns out, is just as flat as the midwest. It was not really a mode of transportation, but more a weird experiment in sleep deprivation and poor airline-esque meals which were ... read more

Zooo...
