What better way to recover from a trek than spending 4 days on a boat watching the scenery and sipping red wine!!! We arrived for check in to our ship at 7.30pm. We spoke to the check in attendent and after we got the greetings out of the way he asked if we would mind changing from a dorm room to a cabin with only two other people. He said there was no catch so we said no problrm. After check in we had to board the ship at 9pm where we met our two cabin buddies. Theses were Huw from Bristol and Eoin from London. Both were the same age and really nice so we were happy we got put in with nice neighbours. That first night all we had to do was attend a ... read more

Puerto Natales is a touristy town, much smaller than Punta Arenas. I quite liked it. It had the same colourful buildings. Actually, most of them looked like shacks. It also has a micro brewery that serves delicious pale ale. From Puerto Natales, you can go to the Torres del Paine national park and also catch the Navimag. I stayed at a great hostel called Erratic Rock, and first of all felt quite intimidated by all the hardcore trekkers there. Actually, I was just jealous that I didn´t have time to do a walk myself. I´ve promised myself I´ll do one in Peru. I did manage to go to the park for one day on an expensive trip, but it was well worth it. The scenery is STUNNING. We were very lucky with the weather too. Hola! We have crossed into Chile and are starting from the south and working our way up to the north of Chile. Our first stop is Puerto Natales, a small town on the coast that is the jumping off point for the main attraction...Torres Del Paine National Park. Considered South America´s premier National park, and one of the best trekking parks in the world, Torres Del Paine NP draws people from all over the world. There are 2 popular treks for this park: The Circuit and the W. We decided to do the W. As you´ll see from the picture of the map, the route forms the shape of a W, hence the name. The Circuit includes both the complete W route plus an additional 3 days trekking the backside of the moutains you see during ... read more

Puerto Natales - Just The Place For A Milodon A giant statue of a milodon or prehistoric sloth stands guard over Puerto Natales, looking out over the shore of Ultima Esperanza Sound and the single road leacing to the town from the southern most regions of the South American mainland. The remains of this ancient creature, which looks something like a large bear, were found in a cave nearby at the very end of the nineteenth century. While this beast was well known among scientists and naturalists from the time of its discovery, the milodon´s fame in the region is also significantly attributable to a book. Bruce Chatwin´s In Patagonia records his travels through this remote land of pampas, windswept fields and isolated farming settlement. He journeyed here in search of the milodon, inspired by the ... read more

Hey all, So I don't have much time but I just wanted to write you all and say "Hi!" from the southern tip of South America. I'm in Puerto Natales right now in an amazing hostel. It's amazing here! I saw flamingos and swans swimming next to each other in the water along the coast. The horizon was covered by clouds this morning but by sunset (at about 5pm) there were some gorgeous mountain peaks that poked their summits out of the clouds. I'm here for a week teaching at an immersion camp. It starts tomorrow and goes through Saturday and then it's back to wonderful Caldera and the desert climate. It's FREEZING here and I'm ready to be back "home". Pictures to come!!! Zach... read more

EN FRANCAIS PLUS BAS MORE PHOTOS HERE I know, I am almost four months behind on my blog. It has become ridiculous. All of this time, I have been writing in my notebook though, but oddly enough, internet access has been less easy, and slower than anywhere else (ok, bad excuse...). Anyways, I will slowly catch up on those four months, but starting with the latest and keep posting... I was supposed to spend 10 days in Chilean Patagonia. Why so much time? had asked some people. The answer was "why not 15 days, rather?" Because I could not get enough of walking in wilderness, of that pure light bathing blue glaciers and mountain peaks, of that feeling of being at world's end, even though I did not get as far south as the famous Ushuaia. ... read more
