After a bus journey with a border crossing and 4 hour flight, we found ourselves in Chilean Patagonia. We piled on the layers and swapped our flip flops for thick socks and walking boots. Our main detour to the south was to visit Torres del Paine national park. Unfortunately our lack of time meant we could only stay for 2 nights with 3 days trekking. Our first day was to Lago Grey referio (shelter) which is by Glacier Grey; the walk took us just under 3.5 hours, stopping for lunch and taking pictures. The landscape is what I would expect the Scottish highlands to be like, vast green hills with snow peaked mountains in the background. Once we had dropped our bags off at the shelter we carried onto see Glacier Grey closer. From afar the ... read more

For today we decided to have a resting day. We slept till 12, from our bed we just reached for our brunch - cake from yesterday, watched TV and did some washing up. In the afternoon we went for a walk around a town, but didnt see anything interesting. Later we also had to pack our staff and that was pretty much that.... read more

After getting the ferry across to the mainland from Porvenir we stayed the night in Punta Arenas. This was the first decent town we´d been to since Ushuaia so was really nice to have a good meal. The next section was a 250km ride (we´ve gone metric with our distances now) to Puerto Natales which took us 3 days, or 2 and a half as we arrived about 1pm on the third day. Luckily we only had a headwind on the second day so made some decent progress for once! Managed just over 100km the first day, 90km the second into a headwind and 60km the next morning. We saw quite a bit of wildlife, some of which a bit random, including Flamingos, Ostrichs, Alpacas, lots of birds and a few million sheep. When we arrived ... read more

Dalsi nie velmi zaujimavy den straveny cestovanim a prechodom hranic. Opat sme museli otvarat batohy, do Chile sa nesmie dovazat ziadne cerstve jedlo a nase uhliky proti komarom tak asi na rontgene vyzerali. Nasou zastavkou bolo Puerto Natales, nudne male mesto kde nic nieje. Another boring day spent by travelling and crossing borders. Again we had to open our rucksacks, you cant take any fresh food to Chile and our mosquito coils probably seemed like something to eat on ... read more

It rained the entire night and it showed no sign of stopping in the morning, but we decided to hike 1.5 hours to see some cave wall paintings from 5000 to 6000 years ago. Along the way we saw many guanaco carcasses from puma kills. There were some round depression in the ground from guanacos rolling around to get rid of fleas and other parasites. We also saw some Lesser Rheas, ostrich-like birds, but no pumas which I am sure were observing us from a distance. The wall paintings were primitive and most not very well preserved, except for a couple of places where you can still make out some figures. We got back around 1:00pm and waited around 2:20pm for our bus toPeurto Natales where we would overnight before heading further south to Tierra del ... read more

From Puerto Natales to Ushuaia. What is there to say? It wasn't a pleasant day. The bus seats were fine for most of the day BUT it was a long day and to make life more interesting I was not feeling well. I had a slight tummy bug... nothing too bad but since my antibiotics were under the buse there wasn't anything I could do about it! The day consisted of bus to a random intersection in the middle of nowhere to be picked up by another bus. I was kinda happy with getting off that first bus though cos the... conductor or "hostie" or whatever was this deaf guy who kept using basic signing to tell me I was pretty and that he earns lots of money and that we should get married and have ... read more

WOW! what a week is has been! we survived our 27 hour bus ride down argentina and made it to el calafate. it was a long one but i made the best of it by sleeping for around 20 hours of it... apparently i needed the sleep? el calafate was a nice little town its main attraction is the perito moreno glacier and what an attraction it is! it is the only glacier in the world that is actually advancing, get this, up to 2m a day! crazy! it is something like 35km long, 5 km wide and 60 m tall! unreal! we took a bus out there and stayed for few hours walking the boardwalk up and down, taking a ton of pictures and watching huge pieces of ice fall off... they sounds like bombs ... read more

Leaving Torres del Paine was sad because it is such a pretty part of the world, however at the same time I was excited because it meant that we would be staying in a real hotel with a bed, a bathroom, the internet and more!! We headed back on the bus to Puerto Natales where we had the opportunity to wander around the small town, do our washing and basically relax. Steve, Allan and I took off and found a coffee shop where we savoured the delights of freshly ground coffee beans, ah the simple things in life. We were leaving the following morning to head to Punta Arenas to stay the night before boarding a bus for the 12hr drive through to Ushuaia, the southern most city of the world. There is not a lot ... read more

"Digital Analog Band - I Promise" "Ypey - Somewhere Else" Finally found the time to write about my trip from Santiago to Puerto Montt! It was a relatively quick trip. I left Santiago on the 21st of January and I had to arrive in Puerto Montt by the 28th of January to catch my boat of doom to Puerto Natales deep in the Patagonia! I had spent two weeks in Santiago and it was certainly time to head out! Ximena, my Couch Surfing Host suggested we take a trip to Concepcion, where she is from. She said we could stay at her parents and take a few day trips around the city. She would have to return to Santiago for monday and from there I would head to Puerto Varas. Puerto Varas is a small lake ... read more

"Substructure - Firewire" I am yet to write about my trip from Santiago down to Puerto Montt. BUT I really want to tell my Navimag story while it is still fresh in my mind! This was a boat ride NO ONE on board will ever forget! Sweet baby jesus! I arrived in Puerto Varas a few days before my Navimag ferry was set to depart from Puerto Montt. The departure date was set for 2pm on January 28th. I decided to spend the night in Puerto Varas instead. It is a nicer place to stay then Puerto Montt. Sorry Puerto Montt locals! I had read quite a few reviews about the Navimag. Surprisingly there was a fair amount of negative reviews so I was a little nervous about the trip. Clearly those people who wrote anything ... read more
