Hola a todos! A quick message just to let you all know that I arrived safely after 26 hours of traveling/layovers. I am EXHAUSTED, physically and emotionally to be back in Chile. We've already had our share of fun adventures crossing the border and running through airports with our luggage/tracking down lost bags/shrink wrapping exploded suitcases. I think this group is going to keep me pretty busy after all :) Now we are all in our homes, resting, unpacking... I'm off to my siesta, but it looks to be a fun few days of watching la cueca (national dance), spending time with tons of Bolivian students visiting Arica this week, watching the world finals of the surf competition here, celebrating the 7th of June with fireworks this weekend, and of course, catching up with my friends ... read more

I had a moment of weakness and went aaaaalll the way from Rio, back to Santiago, up on a 24 hour bus, back to San Pedro, and up to the top of Chile to Arica. It was not the smartest move, but also not one that I regret. So, I made it to Arica, a town that I had decided to skip the first time around in Chile. I met a lovely Swiss girl, Katrin, at the bus station, so I stayed at the same hostel with her. The hostel was truly wonderful - it´s called Sunny Day Hostel and I highly recommend it. The breakfast was woooonderful, and the rooms bright and airy. On day 2 of Arica, Katrin and I rented bicycles and went for a 5 hour bike ride up to 600m above ... read more

Howayas, Hope all is well. Great to talk to those we spoke to on Marks Birthday. It was great seeing you all too. For those we didn´t get to talk to we will try to call you soon. Anywhoo, since we have been talking we have left the lovely Iquique after a lot of chillaxing and doing pretty much nothing for two weeks. It was hard to go. We met some really great people there and had a good laugh. Cheers for all the Birthday wishes too. I had a great one altogether. Col cooked me a lovely breakfast that morning, home made hash browns and all! And just as I swallowed the last tasty bite and was contemplating a little snooze in the sun, he breaks the news about my Birthday present. Paragliding! Oh and ... read more

I was very fond of Arica. A small city, comfortable to walk around, and with a beach! What more could you ask for. Unfortunatel my stomach bug was lingering... so after a few hours of tummy aches my first night I finally caved in and took one of the antibiotics my doctor had given me. However, it was a 1000 mg dose - which was way too huge!!! So I felt even worse afterwards. As luck would have it, there were 4 young Americans staying at the same hotel as me who had literally just finished med school, and they advised me to cut up the antibiotics into 4 parts and take them for a few more days. So I did just that, and was feeling better in no time. There are so many things I ... read more

So its blog time again to update you all on our travels (despite you all being naughty and not leaving any comments). After leaving you last time in Aguas Calientes we enjoyed various trips around Cusco and the surrounding mountains including taking in such sites as the ruins at Ollantaytambo (where we were lucky enough to see the rare sight of a pair of condors soaring on the mountain thermals above the terraces). Other places such as the cathedral in Plaza de Armas were equally stunning boasting around 400 original pieces of colonial Spanish artwork and the gold and silver leaf altars. Though we also visited great historic sites as Pisac, Coricancha and Saqsaywaman (yes its usually pronounced as sexy woman by us ignorant gringos), we have to admit we were becoming slightly worn out with ... read more

So we made it to chile..... we took the bus from arequipa to tacna, peru about a 4 hour ride. Once in tacna, we then hired a taxi, if you wanna call it that, to frive us across the border into chile, and to arica. total distance is about 55km. it cost us about u.s. 5 dollars each for the ride. the driver also helped us with our forms, and the border crossing, which was actually pretty easy. the bus ride wasnt bad, some windy roads, but not as bad as the last one. plus due to the much more leniant peru pharmacy system, i obtained some, lets call them, bus ride helper pills. i now have something to take the edge off those long, white knuckle bus rides we still have to come. So after ... read more

6th January, Arica y Santiago We were flying to Santiago that night, but the flight wasnt until 10pm and check out was at 11am, so we had a lot of time before we had to leave for the airport. We spent a few hours really early on the beach at 8am, watching the army train. I wasn´t envious one bit, from my towel lying on the sand as I could barely walk in the heat, let alone run. We headed into town for some sightseeing. Jake had planned for us to walk up a big mountain which apparently had a museum at the top but as soon as i saw how high it was, i thought ´not a chance´, especially in the midday heat, wearing my gold sandels! We instead walked past the mountain along the ... read more

3rd January, Arequipa y Arica We had to be at the bus station at 7am in the morning. We got a 7hour bus to Arica, Chile where we had planned to stay for 2-3 days. The bus journey was really pleasant for a change... ´Cruz del Sol´provided us with food, drinks, entertainment (in the form of bingo!) and some music. At the bus station in Tacna (buses to Arica from Arequipa go via here) we met another couple from Bristol. We were all approached by hoards of taxi companies trying to get us to go with them over the border to Chile. We split a taxi with the other couple, then it was an hour over the border. It was really funny when we got to the border, instead of your usual searches for guns and ... read more

Even unremarkable towns are called home by some people, usually with a sense of pride and affection that is mysterious to those who aren't from the place. Iquique (pronounced ee-KEE-kay) is like this. I had only two reasons for being there. It was on the way to Arica, which is further north, and it had been home to my friend Juan Villanueva, who lives in Geneva, so I stopped by for a short visit. In this part of Chile the land is a high plateau that drops abruptly to sea level. Iquique is a city of about 200 000 people that stands partly on the plateau and partly on a tongue of land sticking out into the Pacific Ocean. I got there about 22h00 and as I've been warned about muggings in South America, I don't ... read more
