6th January, Arica y Santiago

We were flying to Santiago that night, but the flight wasnt until 10pm and check out was at 11am, so we had a lot of time before we had to leave for the airport. We spent a few hours really early on the beach at 8am, watching the army train. I wasn´t envious one bit, from my towel lying on the sand as I could barely walk in the heat, let alone run.

We headed into town for some sightseeing. Jake had planned for us to walk up a big mountain which apparently had a museum at the top but as soon as i saw how high it was, i thought ´not a chance´, especially in the midday heat, wearing my gold sandels! We instead walked past the mountain along the coast. On the way back, i managed to somehow walk in watery shit, that some scruffy stray had deposited in the middle of the path!! I looked round and saw a large group of people pointing and laughing! I had to clean it on the grass and head to mcdonalds where i cleaned my foot and sandle in the sink, much to the disgust if the bathroom attendant!

We arrived at the airport at 8pm that night and it was very quiet. Arica airport was very small and our flight was the only one that evening. We flew with LAN and it was fairly pleasant, but i was bored however, as Jake slept the whole way. We arrived about 1am and went to find our transfer bus which was to take us to the hostel. We were the first to the taxi and had to wait 30 minutes till more pasengers came to fill it and we could get going. When we eventually did, the taxi, which dropped off everyone at their various hotels, left us till last - typical! We eventually arrived at our hostel at 2.30am
