Matt writes - Arica was a warm relief after the rain and altitude of La Paz as Emma and I travelled with a Norwegian Hannah, Swede Anders, and Dutchman Jip. We had a confusing half an hour at the Bolivian/Chilean border where the bus conductor took the passports from everyone for checking elsewhere, whilst we missed another fantastic view of a snow capped volcano in the distance obscured once again by grey clouds. Our journey would take us through the beautiful national park of Lauca, although the weather would deny us this view also. Refreshments were taken at the beginning of darkness and a slither of orange sunset could be seen in the distance as we hoped for better weather at our destination. Our excitement was fuelled as we drove into town and past pedestrians clad ... read more

Arrived in Arica after another eventful 10hr bus journey - people being sick left right and centre, police checking passports and some old woman wiping her grandchilds sick on the back of my chair - cheers! The hostal we stayed in was fantastic - Sunny days - and Ross who owned it was a really nice guy - obviously knew Paulines weak spot and he gave us cake when we arrived! The next day was spent arguing over many things such as the colour of the grass, black being white and other generally picking! The real issue was whether or not to hire a jeep and brave the Lauca Natioanl Park ourselves. After almost a full day of bickering it was Steve 1 Pauline 369! Get in! We collected our Jeep and headed off into the ... read more

I´ve decided to take the day off from traveling, and lay low in Arica. I actually wish I could just check into the hotel for the day and then leave tonight, but that isn´t going to happen. I´m just so eager to get to Peru! The more I read about it the more exciting it sounds! Another day in Chile is much as expected. Overpriced and frustrating (while at first I was happy to get a hotel for only $8, I was later dissapointed to find the hot water was not working again. I´m still dirty. Also, I HAVE to do laundry now. I have not done any in a month, and I have worn the current pair of underwear for three days. Laundry cost $14. $14. That right there... almost ruined the day. And I ... read more

We had really nice last couple of days here in Arica, sun has been shining, schedules been fully booked. Yesterday Michal went to town to organise bus tickets, some padlocks to secure our stuff and shopping, while I finally finished my thesis. In the evening we went to have a BBQ on beach with some friends. The food was delicious, lot of meat mixed together with peppers and onions and fried on some pan that was taken from tractor :) Franz and Maggie were showing us some traditional Chilean dance, I think its called Quenca. We drank some beer and Chilean vodka and lauged and talked until 4am. Then we had couple of hours of sleep and got up to organise more stuff. Gladly we got an email from Yoyo that he found someone who wants ... read more

Today was a nice day in the sun and cooking for hours. Michal was hunting for mussels (machas) from the sea. They are buried under sand in the sea, and to find them, have to dig into the sand with a heal of a foot and when you feel then, pick them up. I was lieing in the sun and checking out huge medusas that were washed on the shore. After few hours michal came home with a huge bag of mussels, it took us probably couple of hours to open and clean them all. Then just some garlic, oregano and cheese on top, and on grill with some nice garlic herb bread y listo! In the end Michal didn't do any work, and I only wrote one page, which means tomorrow I will have to ... read more
