29th April 2009 After another 12 hour journey, with no food we arrived in Tacna, hungry and with no where to stay. Once we found somewhere a rest was in order so we slept, waking up only for food and drink. Going out for dinner that night we realised that we hadn't missed much, Tacna is definately a border town and nothing else. The Italian food we had was nice though. 30th April 2009 Today it was time for a new country. So we crossed the border in a novel way via train, these are very rare in South America and as such it wasn't exactly the orient express. Even so it was a great way to cross and a lot less hassle than getting a taxi (the only other option)! As an extra special treat ... read more

Hola a todos! So I made it home safely last night from my wild adventure of a viaje with my friend Francisco (and new friend Pablo). I have enough memories, stories, fotos, and observations to fill your mind for hours, but for the sake of avoiding carpal tunnel and saving some stories for tea time in person, i'll do a quick (keep in mind I am still Amy, so quick=half a novel) recap and attempt to select just the highlights in pictures. 3 de Julio-Viernes- Flew to Santiago Chile, Met up with Francisco, walked around Chile's capital all day/night. Saw Plaza de Armas, la Moneda (presidents house), Cerro Santa Lucia, Barrio Bohemio y Bella Vista. Returned to Pancho's home in Machali 4/5 de Julio-Fin de Semana- Happy birthday USA!!-Spent the weekend with Pancho in his house, ... read more

I can't believe I've been here nearly a month already. This last month is going to fly by sooo quickly. I've finally returned to my habit of taking obscene amounts of photos, so I thought I'd do a photo update. Friday morning at 7am I fly to Santiago (yes, it was supposed to be Sunday, I changed my flight to have a little extra travel time and make it for Francisco's family birthday party Saturday). For the next two weeks I'll be traveling with my Chilean friend who studied with my in Iowa this past semester (we road tripped to Colorado in May and he spent time in Winterset, so some of you have met him). We have very tentative plans of heading to Argentina Sunday, seeing Mendoza and continuing to Buenos Aires where i'll be ... read more

So they tell me I made the local news Sunday night. I didn't see it, but.. it's kind of cool I suppose :) Sunday I woke up really really early and left my house at 4:45 to take a bus outside of town to climb a mountain to watch the sunrise. wow. Chile has an interesting affect on me. It was FREEZING.. and I waited with a few friends for 2 hours... The Aymara new year starts with the first rays of light on the solstice. So we waited. and waited. and waited. and waited. and finally started seeing light around 7:30 because of the fog from the ocean. lol. It was really interesting to see the traditions and rituals though, and everyone was extremely eager to talk to us gringas about why we were there ... read more

Well, I still haven't taken many photos yet, but the kids at Aldea SOS always steal my camara so thanks to them I have nearly 400 now. I've kept busy lately; in typical amy-manner..... My official university classes begin Monday this week, but I've been teaching informal workshops/lessons to practice and spread the love of screen printing. I first made sure to teach Rodrigo and his Mom. They were my inspiration that some of you read about for coming back to teach art here. Rodi is really creative, and always looking for new outlets to express his ideas. His mom is an artist who sells her stuff (jewelry and purses.. if you've seen my stuff from Chile most all of it is hers) in the paseo en el centro. I visited their apartment (right next to ... read more

Hola a todos- Sorry it seems it's been a while; many have requested updates. The honest truth is I've been crazy busy 24-7 since I arrived! BIG art update: Last week, I waited for news on my classroom that a friend was supposedly finding for me, only to find out after a week of waiting that I "couldn't use a classroom because I wasn't a professor." cool. So, I did what any normal person would do-scratch that what Amy would do- and went to talk to the Dean of the department (basically like CHAFA at UNI, but includes a little different colleges because they don't really have the art/theater components). I talked to him about my project and my goal to teach down here. Told him about the scholarships I got from the Curris Award and ... read more

I can't believe I've already been here one week. I am happy to say that the honeymoon feeling has finally started to pass, it was wearing me out :) When I arrived I was just overwhelmed with different emotions and soo many things to do to help the group here; answering questions, making connections, finding houses and answers, free passes for dancing ;) haha Much has changed in one year though. I'm so thankful to still have my friends and familiar places, but some of the most important things have gone or changed in this year. There is a lot of construction (in my house, on campus and down town). My old stomping ground, bar alto, no longer exists; and my best friend Victor isn't here anymore. The university is not on strike, so that in ... read more
