Count down to bueno viaje es cuatro dias. We are trying to put down a plan of places to visit on our trip, so many places so little time... We still didn't sell the surfboard here, which means that we either have to donate it to the poor kids and accept $100+ losses or take it with us. Maybe we can attach a sail on it, and use it in Greece. Today we bumped into a guy who is planning to start sand surfing business here in Arica, so we signed up straight away as his first customers for Sunday. It would be quite funny if something happened to us on last night... knock knock knock. It was one of the things I most wanted to do here though, so lucky me that we found it. ... read more

I never thought Valparaiso could feel so much like home. After my two-week excursion to the north, I was thrilled to return. My trip consisted of a mix of tourism, education and culture shock. It was by far the most unique thing I’ve ever done in my life. But first, I need to catch up on events from before my departure. This entry is a bit longer than the others because there’s a lot to cover. I experienced two fundamental aspects of the Chilean culture in the week before my trip. The first was what they refer to here as a “temblore,” or earth shake. In the Midwest we would call this the Armageddon. Quite literally, the earth shook violently for a solid ten seconds. I was in a café with my Spanish class (yes, I ... read more

I arrived in Arica early on the 28th September. Journey details: Origen/Destination... San Pedro de Atacama - Arica Mode of transport... Bus Company... Tur Bus Cost.... 13000 Chilean Pesos Duration... about 10 hours Remarks... decent comany, decent service. From San Pedro I'm pretty sure this was the only company serving this route. (Something I should have said in my previous post: San Pedro can be a pain in ass to get out off, especially if you wanna go to Argentina... there's a surprising lack of services given the gringo population there). There isn't much I can write about Arica since I arrived there Friday morning at then promtly left on Saturday morning. I stayed at "Sunny Days" hostal the one night. It was a great place and the guy that runs it (Russ) was a pretty ... read more

After a few days chilling in Valparaiso, Tom and I spent a day traveling by bus to the most northern tip of Chile, a city called Arica. We explored town, walked up a mountain and had a great view of the city and came close to Jesus! :) We visited a mummy museum, and tho I am not super keen on museums it was really interesting to learn how the Incas lived and survived. I love that they lived for survival, there was no such thing as greed and power, just day to day hunting, weaving and survival... is only... Day two we went for a 3hr walk along the coast and explored the rock pools. There were hundreds of lizards and crabs everywhere! The crabs freaked me out, but Tom was fasinated. At night we ... read more

Here's the long overdue account of my post-paradise adventures! First, though, I want to thank whatever kind soul worked to recover my previous two blog entries, wherever you are you are appreciated! Now, where to begin... My last night in Valparaíso was a little sad. As things turned out I really liked my host family and didn't really want to say goodbye. I truly felt like I was part of the family when I was living there and I still feel part of the family even though I'm gone. I hope to see them again, but if I don't we drank well to our goodbye with some delicious Cuban rum and then took crazy photos all around. Salud familia! And then I left, ten o'clock at night I boarded the bus to La Serena, an overnight ... read more

From La Paz, it was onwards to Chile and our first stop was its most northerly town, Arica. From the moment we arrived, it was immediately very different to either Peru or Bolivia - much more modern, it kind of reminded us of Carrickfergus 10 years ago (ok, so not *that* modern!). Neil was even able to pick up a charger for his ipod, something we'd been unsuccessfully trying to find for a few weeks. Our hotel here was fab, very cosy, with a lovely French owner who contsantly spoke in her own personal hybrid language of French and Spanish, leaving us a bit disorientated and not quite sure where we were at times! Arica is a beach resort, so with it being winter here, there were very few, if any, other travellers about, and a ... read more

I hope my legs don´t break, walking on the moon. Back in Chile´s Atacama desert, after our brief jaunt in Bolivia, we had a spare day so decided to check out the Valley of the Moon. This is where, over centuries of high winds and floods, the sand and stone formations have come to resemble the surface of the moon. Having seen another lunascape in Namibia, we were considering ourselves veterans of this type of thing. This time though, we went for our visit at sunset and as the low light hit the rocks they started to glow red as the sky turned purple, all set to a backdrop of white capped volcanoes. Nice, and a definite improvement on the Namibian experience. Then it was time to head north again. Our last port of call in ... read more

Well, after lord knows how many months, we've managed to make it into Chile again, this time in the very far north! (having left from the very far south! This time, possibly via the messiest of all border crossings, but that seems to be the norm here. As per peruvian usual, early bus departure, and leaving over 30 minutes late. made it to Tacna in time, but as per peruvian usual again, there are plenty of vultures, sorry, cab drivers yelling at us before we've left the bus! Border crossings per taxi are the norm here, 5 paying customers per very old and big amarican car! We run away from all those hard selling lads, and hide in a diner for some food. then try to get on a bus, but the smart feller manages to ... read more
