My arrival in Pucon was on a cloudy, cheerless day and I would have had little idea that one of Chile's most active volcanoes was lurking just 15km to the south if my guidebook hadn't told me (though it's possible I might have figured it out from the many tour agencies around town offering volcano climbs). Smart cafes and a wealth of lodgings indicated a tourist hotspot, and some of the first voices I heard were American. I somehow managed to pick a hostel that was both overpriced and underendowed with facilities, learning only after having checked in that strictly speaking they weren't lying when they said the place had wifi (it just didn't work), the "toasty" conditions that would apparently result from the wood-burning stove being fired up only extended about a metre away from ... read more

After a quick stop in a city called Puerto Montt (a seedy port town) it was onwards and upwards through Chile to reach the town of Pucon. Pucon is famous because it lies in the shadow of a huge active volcano called Volcan Villarica. It is also an outdoor centre and attracts all sorts of adrenalin seeking types. Though after our recent exertions we were not sure how much adrenalin seeking we were actually up for! In the end the decision was made for us. It had been raining for a few days now and we were told that it had been raining for even longer here in the middle of the Chilian lake district. During our journey we could see flooded fields and roads and some bridges we went over looked like they were about ... read more

Day 189: Puking to Pucon! 'You live and learn. At any rate, you live'. Douglas Adams I take (almost) full responsibility for the mess I was in for the journey today! I woke up at quarter past eight, with fifteen minutes to pack and get to the bus station. Fortunately, I was still a bit drunk and the full weight of the hangover hadn't kicked in as I threw everything into my backpack and got a taxi to the bus station. Suffice to say, I made it onto the bus in time, and spent much of the day leaning over a plastic bag, grateful that it didn't contain 'safety holes'. The journey was certainly a bit of a challenge, and memorable for all the wrong reasons! After a couple of hours we had the joy of ... read more

Day 197 - Friday 4 April The bus pulled into Pucon about 8 in the morning and apart from the stray dogs you get in every south american town, the place was deserted. We´d already booked in somewhere so set off to find it. Suddenly a car pulled up and asked us if we were going to the hostel we´ve booked into. It was the owner and she´d come to give us a free lift. Rather decent of her. After checking in I left Russ and Pa to go and have a walk around town whilst I had a shower and freshend up. Everybody who comes to Pucon climbs the volcano but as I did one a few weeks ago in New Zealand I wasn´t planning on doing so. However after reading about it on the ... read more

Aktive Vulkaner!! Pucon Etter noen late dager i Argentina. * ... read more

¡Queridos amigos!

Plagued by strays.......... So the first night in Chile didn´t go all that well. Our first campsite was lacking in hot water and flushing toilets, and there were little frogs hopping all about the showers. Its only redeeming feature was that the trees there smelt like mulled wine :-) The next day we found another campsite which had all the essentials: hot water, laundry service, lights, table and chairs, barbecue and stray cats and dogs. The cats weren´t really a problem, just scrounging for food, that was until they actually stole our cooked chicken (I couldn´t believe the little b@ggers; it was even wrapped up in plastic!) from the table in the 3 or 4 minutes it took me to walk to the sink and back. Little thieves......not happy. Though you have to give them credit ... read more

Right, We´re just about to leave Pucon in the Chilean lake district and head off over 2 ish days of travelling to Los Roques in venezuela. There´s been too much going on to put any decent info on everyhting we´ve done so we´ll do that properly upon our return to blighty. Very quick highlights, Patagonia was amazing Buenos aires - jolly good Glaciers - quality Pucon volcano climbing brill, mountain biking splendid although suffering a little today. Overall weather been good, food and wine and beer even better. Most random moment of the trip so far was when i was sat next to robert from venezuela on the plane. he is venezuela´s best U19 javelin thrower and had just started to learn english. I have left him with a copy of pies and prejudice to accelerate ... read more

Ridiculously we awoke to cloud. Unacceptable. We continued with our plan to hire bikes and visit a local waterfall. Just might not be as enjoyable as planned. The bike shop gave us a route and some sketchy instructions which we immediately messed up. This involved us riding up and down the main road trying to find the turn off onto the dirt track. Some low level cursing persisted but ultimately we found our way. The track was deeply rutted which made it uncomfortable, but it was nice to get away from the road. Soon we found ourselves at a bridge crossing where a lady shouted at us. We waved and carried on. Then I fell off. Louisa in sympathy fell off a little further on - so we were both having a wonderful time. The weather ... read more
