Another day of travelling awaited in order to get us to Pucon and the Chilean Lake District. No such excitement with boats this was plane and taxi - should be smooth and uneventful. Flight was delayed at Puntas Arenas, then it took an unscheduled stop in Puerto Montt before ending up in Santiago and despite booking our flights nearly a year earlier bizarrely we weren't able to sit next to each other. We then managed to get our flight to Temuco despite being shocked to see that it carried on to Pucon (our final destinateion) even though we were in a taxi for that leg of the journey, nevermind. After a terrifying 10km drive up a rough, dusty dirt road we reached the park entrance. Now I know what 4x4 are for. Unfortunately we only had a Toyota Yaris. We then trekked high into the Huerquehue National Park. Then we climbed 1000m through virgin forest (bamboo, a type of beech tree and a conifer I didn't recognise at all. The trees were gigantic. The wildlife is compltetely different to Europe, including snakes, humming birds, bright emerald green lizards, and a tarantula, the last to of which which Dan managed to photograph. At the top of the trail which we reached late, with the sun getting low, was a set of "hanging lakes" formed by glaciers "hesitating" on their way down, forming a dam. Sebastian totesi suomalaisten ja chileläisten välillä seuraavia eroja. Suomalainen tykkää matkustaa yksin, ei ole läheisissä väleissä sukulaistensa kanssa. Chileläisille suku on tärkeää eivätkä halua olla yksin, pitää olla porukassa vaikka olisi riitaista. Totesin siihen että ne suomalaiset eivät matkusta Etelä-Amerikassa, jotka eivät halua matkustaa yksin, ja aika harva lähtee tänne myöskään porukalla. Nukuttiin pitkään ja päästiin kaupunkiin vasta neljältä. Muut menivät rannalle, minä 30 tunnin tauon jälkeen nettiin. Oli tullut kymmenkunta viestiä. Olin ajatellut jatkaa seuraavaksi Valparaisoon, mutta Paula ilmoitti että olen tervetullut Concepcioniin, joten jatkan siis sinne. Kävin selvittämässä jatkoyhteyksiä. Heitin sitten talviturkkini, vaikka oli lunta näkyvissä! Olin siis ostanut lipun klo 12.25 lähtevään bussiin. Minulla oli hyvää aikaa aamulla käydä aamiaisella ja netissä ja pakata. Pyysin soittamaan taksin, ja pääsin vaivattomasti bussiasemalle 1000 pesolla. Kun kello tuli 12.25, laiturille saapui Jac-firman bussi, joka oli menossa samaan suuntaan: Villarica ja Santiago. Mutta se ei ollut kuulemma oikea bussi. No se bussi lähti eikä toista bussia näkynyt, joten tuli vähän sellainen olo, että menikö tämä nyt oikein. Asemalla oli muitakin Puconiin menijöitä. Oikea bussi saapui viimein ja lähti 20 minuuttia myöhässä. Bussimatka kesti alle kolme tuntia. Olin menossa Sebastianin luo. Hän on chileläinen, mutta syntynyt Suomessa ja asunut siellä 13-vuotiaaksi. Sebastian asuu 30 kilometrin päässä Catripullin kylässä. After not sleeping very much on the night bus from Santiago, I arrived bright and early Wednesday morning in Pucón. It´s a small-ish town in a beautiful setting on the edge of Lake Villarrica, overlooked by (still active) Volcano Villarrica, and is one of the main tourist centres in the Chilean Lake District. And boy, is it touristy...loads of cafes, restaurants and bars, all packed, mainly, with Chileans on holiday. It´s one of the main centres for outdoor adventure activities in Chile, and in that way reminded me a bit of Taupo in New Zealand. There are loads of tour and travel agencies wanting to sell you various activities - whitewater rafting, volcano climbing...After Valparaíso, it was all a bit overwhelming, particularly seeing as I was feeling a bit sleep deprived.
