Week 8 Santiago is the political, economic and financial capital of Chile set in a wide plain ringed by the Andes and is now the 6th largest city in S. America where nearly 40% of Chileans live. Our base for the next couple of days was La Casa Roja, an international backpackers hostal set in a large rambling mansion around several courtyards and boasting a car, swimming pool, Sky TV etc. That night we feasted on a BBQ prepared by the hostal as we bade farewell to several of our travellers (including my friend Catherine) as their journey on the truck ended in Santiago. I think most of the group went to bed around 4.00am (fairly early by Chilean standards!). The next day I set off to explore more of the city and, recognising that all ... read more

Having just finished our little trip through Chile's "Lake District" we thought we'd show you a few pictures of our travels. The Lake District is a relatively small section of Chile (between Temuco and Puerto Montt if you have the time, inclination, or Google Earth on which to search them out) that features many lakes, mountains, and volcanoes. It was one area of our trip that we were particularly looking forward to and, despite rubbish weather for a day or two, it didn't disappoint us. To help us on our way through the area we hired a mighty Toyota Yaris (1000cc of raging power). It's not a bad car actually, except some silly bugger in the design department at Toyota had the daft idea of putting the speedo right in the middle of the dashboard, so ... read more

Hello, We stay for three days in Hostal Willy, a nice place just a few blocks away from main street. Old wooden buildings lined up, giving the town a view similar to Jackson Hole. Spring is in the air, temperature is rising and the sun is getting stronger, the snow on the volcan Villarica begins to melt. We just enjoy walking along the shore of the lake, sit down for another lovely meal ( trout is excellent here ) or have a drink every now and then. Just looked at www.thok.be to see how the ranking in biljart has evolved, but I can't play any final now. Before arriving in town Pucon we visited a winery Concha y Torro, with the famous casillero del diable, a wine we like very much. Already two months gone, more ... read more

After Santiago was another long over night bus journey of 10 hours to Pucon which is the start of Chiles own Lake District region which we were looking forward to as it looks amazing. As we got of the bus, we were both very glad that we bought the coats as there was a freezing wind blowing. We soon forgot about the wind as we took in the views of the town, Beautiful snowy volcanic peaks and with one of them with steam rising from the top of it as it’s still active! We walked to our hostel and were in luck we were the only ones staying there for the first few nights and the place was gorgeous. We were staying in our own wooden house which is best described as a Swiss style lodge. ... read more

Arrived in Pucon, the Chilean Lake District, 2 days ago. We crossed over the Andes and experienced some awsome scenery on the mountain passes. Must have been at least 6 foot of snow at the highest points. Glad we were in our coach and not the numerous lorries we saw that were either stuck or being towed up by the biggest tow trucks you´ve ever seen! Pucon is a quaint little town that could easily be placed in the Canadian Rockies. Lots of wooden lodges, nice restaurants etc. Difference is that i don´t think Canada would allow the large group (around 20) of dogs that just jog around the town in one group. They don´t bother with people in the slightest, think they´re too busy picking up mates for a night out or chasing cars down ... read more

So, we left Santiago in high spirits; the weather had been kind to us and gifted us with a week of perfect snowboarding conditions, the price had been bargainous and the food marvelous. A real holiday within a holiday. Despite losing most of the feeling in my right foot (it still hasn't returned!) we headed down towards the Lake District in high spirits... Our first stop was the small town of Pucon. Bordered by a lake on one side and an active volcano on the other, the setting is supposed to be one of the most picturesque in Chile. It certainly looked promising as our overnight bus from Santiago brought the sunlit volcano into sight (just as we stirred from our slightly hunched slumber). The cone of the volcano is almost perfectly symmetrical, and the ... read more

Peurto Varras is such a cute little place. Our first night we got in, settled into our hotel (which was by far the nicest hotel I will stay in down here. The beds were like clouds) and then went for dinner. Dinner was fairly pricey but I guess that is what is to be expected when you are in Chile. Dinner was really nice. I had a steak and just to give everyone who travels to Chile fair warning: when you order medium rare, you will get your steak blue! Herbie and I left dinner early and went back to the hotel. I was in a grumpy mood because I was a little grouped out but all was well after a sleep in the dream bed. In the morning we headed out to go horse ... read more

Bussissa oli mukava matkustaa...penkin sai läh... read more
