So, my longest bus journey so far on the trip, and it was great. South Americans know how to do their buses. Real luxury this one, huge seat, virtually reclined into a full bed, and free hot & cold drinks and food, plus a free buffet along the way at a restaurant. Finally arrived in Florianopolis, Brazil late afternoon, and shared a taxi with an Irish couple to a hostel which had been recommended by a few people. Hands down the best place i've stayed so far, and probably won't be topped. It was a big house with gardens, pool, lots of hammocks, and its own chef. Never been to a hostel with a chef. The breakfasts were amazing, fresh fruits, ham & cheese, breads, and a few different cakes, freshly baked each morning. The chef ... read more

Arriving on a cloudy day in Floripa I decided to just chill in the hostel Tucano as this is my first day, the owner Caio a young dude is super cool as is the staff, all very friendly, it is the quiet season so not so much going on in the hostel, 6 people staying 5 of us guys all from the US and one Aussie girl. We decided to watch a movie to beat boredom so the texan dude pop the Last King of Scotland dvd and it was only me and him who finished the whole movie, the other boys did not want to see brutality and gore so they left before it ended, just as the credits were showing, power got cut, apparently because of the wind. it is raining here on and ... read more

I got stuck. Stuck enjoying the seaside paradise of Florianopolis, Brazil - Floripa as it is nicknamed. I have been here for over a week now, after fleeing Uruguay when a storm rolled in. I ran for a 9 15 bus out of Punta del Diablo, which of course didn't arrive until 30 minutes later, then broke down a few kilometers down the road. Eventually I made it to Chui, was let off to exit Uruguay, walked for a significant while with my backpack, found the bus terminal, changed money, got on a bus to Porto Alegre, Brazil, passed the entry checkpoint and had to have the bus back up along the highway, got my visa approved, arrived in Porto Alegre to wait in the terminal and found an overnight bus to Florianopolis where I took ... read more

From Iguacu we decided we needed some beach time, and a little bit of a relax post-BA so we headed up the coast to the Island of Santa Catarina and Florianopolis. As soon as we had arrived in the city we jumped on another bus and headed across the island, finding ourselves a nice possie overlooking the lake and just minutes walk from Mole Beach. It was supposed to be sunny and quiet and relaxing. Day 1 involved far too many cocktails, thanks to Caleb the Aussie barman and Caitlin´s fondness for cinnamon. Thankfully day 2 involved pizza, but sadly for us, the sun barely poked his head out for more than 20 minutes at a time. We remained pasty white, with very sad haviaina tan lines on our feet. We needed a plan.... ... read more

What an excellent recommendation this island was!! While we were in Cusco, Peru (back in January) we were given a recommendation by a random Brasilian traveler who was sharing our table who said to definitely make a visit to Florianopolis. The Irish surfer, Skully and London Bloke Pete from Punto del Diablo made the journey to Florianapolis with us. We would eventually find ourselves with these same crazy guys one month later!! What a riot! After 4 buses and 36 hrs of traveling we found ourselves crossing from the mainland town of Sáo José onto the island of Florianopolis. We met a guy (Luke) on the bus who gave us a recommendation to stay at the Sunset Hostel. Our initial intent was to get an apartment, which would make it easier on our budget... but as ... read more

Tim Version: * Surfed and got very very drunk in Florianopolis and loved every minute of it. * Experienced P12 (an outdoors huge club pool party) in all its glory and didn't want to ever leave. I miss Aussie Sunday Sessions though=( ** An apology, a severe lack of photos here! Its a very photogenic place but as I spent most of my time either in the water or consuming tasty beverages, I almost never had my camera on me! I will try and get photos from others who were there with me ** The version dancing drunk as a monkey at a pool party filled with some of the most beautiful women ever created, both naturally and (probably the majority here) surgically enhanced: Florianopolis is a well off area and the intro to the mainland ... read more

Florianopolis We had tried to book into the Backpackers Share House which had been recommended to us but unfortunately it was booked out, so we booked another hostel on the South of the Island called Albergue do Pirata instead. On arrival we were taken across the road from the main hostel to our "double room" where we were greeted by a kid who wouldnt let us in the door, and then an old dorm room with broken bunks and a double bed all in the same room... on top of this the main hostel was virtually empty. All this aside, it was a great opportunity to explore the south which was very pretty. We went for a 1.5 hr trek through the jungle to a secluded beach which also had a lagoon, on the way back, ... read more
