Following the falls, the original plans had been to venture back to Buenos Aires but as I've learnt, things often change when you're travelling. A girl I met at the falls told me about Florianopolis and after our first day at the falls a few of us headed into town for dinner. Out of curiousity we stopped at the bus station and after some use of my best Espanol I soon had a one way ticket to Florianopolis in my hand. My trip to the Brazillian side of the falls started early in order to ensure I could complete the park and get to the terminal in time for my 8.30pm bus. I took all my belongings and jumped on my first my bus to the Argentinian border to be stamped out. I jumped on another ... read more

Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) has been our most remote place visited so far. We took a 3 hour bus ride from a city called Curitiba to a little ferry port and boarded a boat with 4 other locals to a tropical island. We arrived to very few people, and where I wrote before that Ilha Grande had no roads, cars etc - this is another meaning altogether! There aren’t even street lights! So when I left the internet cafe on the first night I pretty much walked back, hands out in front of me hoping I wouldn’t fall into a stagnant pool of water with the thousands of mosquitoes that live here (I mean THOUSANDS - we are getting bitten loads!). It was pretty scary - the paths are covered in trees so there isn’t ... read more

On our arrival into Florianopolis we were pleasantly suprised to find how quiet it was. The city centre itself (Florianopolis, the capital of Santa Catarina) is just like a normal CBD, it faces the inland side of the island which is connected to the mainland by a bridge. We jumped on a series of buses that would take us down to the south of the island to the small fishing village of Costa de Dentro in which we were staying. The south is very much less developed than the north. The north of Santa Catarina is supposed to be like the Gold Coast and is frequented mainly by families from other South American countries. The mid north, Barra Lagoa, is a town located on a huge natural lagoon. It reminded us of Byron Bay, very laid ... read more

I arrive in Florinopolis (or Floripa as the locals call it) at 8:30 am. At least this bus ride was much better than my bus ride up to Cusco (see my Cusco Entry). That was the ride from hell. It's very hot in Floripa, so, I decide to take a taxi to my hostel, Casa Brasil. The hostel is a small, family run hostel. The staff are really nice people. They tell me that two of the beaches are only half an hours walk or a 10 minute bus ride from the hostel. I decide to walk to the first beach (Mole) and don't put on sunscreen as I'm only planning to go for about 1 hour. It's a very nice sunny, hot day and the ocean breeze keeps the temperature down a bit. Mole is ... read more

Ilha de Santa Caterina - Florianopolis Arrived in the south of the island of Santa Caterina to a lovely little hostel in a very quiet part of the island. Spent a couple of days lounging around on the beach, swimming in the sea and generally taking it very very easy. Met some great people at the hostel and we spent a few evenings chatting over food and drinks. What more can I say!! It was very hard to leave! I'll let the photos speak for them selves :) ... read more

So long bus journey from Parati, we didn´t bother with the sleeping tablets and by the time we arrived in the hostel I was like the walking dead. Luckily Eddie was awake enough to the thinking for us both. So this is a little coastal island off south brasil, the island is Santa Catarina and we stayed over the east coast in Lagoa De Conceicao, and we were there for 5 nights. Basically this was a few days of beaches and chilling out. We went to the following beaches....Praia De Mole, Gelehta, Barra De Lagoa. Then eddie decided we had enough lazing around and hauled me up over a cliff to visit Praia De Leiste. This was cool....look for the photos of this place. Walk wasn´t too bad (but when we kept cresting a hill to ... read more

When I woke up around 7am on the bus, the views were completely different. It was like we were in the Caribbean with palm trees all over and little houses made of wood. As soon as I arrived at the wonderful hostel (Casa Brasil) I met some people and we all went for dinner and some drinks afterwards. After all it was my birthday! The following morning I woke up with a massive hangover so didn’t do much, but it didn’t matter as it was a very cloudy and rainy day. For dinner we went to a Mexican restaurant. Again the following day was very cloudy so went for a walk around town and bought myself my first Brazilian bikini (and it won’t be the last). For dinner we all help out in preparing a nice ... read more

So another heavy night on the beer, I think i fell into bed about 8am or something after skinny dipping in the lagoon on the walk home, all for a bet! We had to check out at 12 so we rushed around like crazy trying to get packed up! I went off to the cashpoint and to drop off laundry, then we came back to hostel, chilled and played heads and volleys! Good times! We had to get the bus for Iguacu at 7 so by the time 5 came i really needed to pull the finger out, collect washing and get the bus! After a mad hour trying to get sorted we got our taxi and headed to the bus stop. T... read more

Another early rise, I was up at 2.30 and headed to the hammocks, where i sat to read but people kept coming out and in the end there was about 12 of us chatting and laughing! I even had my own waiter to get beers! After 6 hours of me (Tom) staying in the hammock we headed downstairs for the fish bbq! It was awesome! beers and cards all night long..... ... read more

Another good nights sleep, the only problem was that there was no ac in the hostel and 10 people in one room meant it was very hot! we headed off to the beach and rented surf boards. The day great, surf and sun all day. When we got back to the hostel we got showered, dressed and headed out for food before a big night out. The club that we went to was a taxi ride away near the beach, it looked like a shack but when we got inside there was a great atmosphere, live music and loads of people from our hostel. After loads of drinks we decided to go, on the way out some geezer offered us a lift. He had the coolest jeep i've ever seen. so 4 of us jumped in ... read more
