22.10. Soooooo hungover today! The three of us (matt, savior and me) planned a trip to Florianopolis today, which is about 2 hours south of Blumenau. Savio was having a family meeting and Matt and I joined him to get to see another place in Brazil. On the way there we were all suffering terrible from last night lol I had to really concentrate at every turn to not be sick in savios nice car.. Savio invited us to join him on his family gathering, so we went to his uncles house.. there was soooo much food, about 8 cakes for dessert, it was amazing! Savios family was extremely welcoming and nice to us, loads of them actually spoke german fluently which really surprised me again.. We had a lovely afternoon eating and chatting and eating ... read more

It appears that I will not last long in Florianopolis or more accurately Ilha de Santa Catarina. I was planning on staying for 10 days, but find myself leaving after only 4 days. This place is beautiful, at least since the sun came out yesterday, but for some reason I haven't really been feeling it. Maybe I chose the wrong neighborhood. I chose Barra da Lagoa because it was close to the beach and the hostel that I chose sits high on a hill with amazing ocean views. But all semblance of life, shops, and entertainment are in a neighborhood called Lagoa. My first night a hostel friend and I took the bus to check it out. However, we had to wait like 20 minutes for the bus to take us there, and almost an hour ... read more

The phenomenally big country of Brazil was on our itinery for many reasons; beautiful beaches, exciting cities... but most of all because of it's world famous Carnaval celebrations, a party not to be missed. As we were in the area at the right time of year it would've been rude not to!  The tough decision was deciding where to be for this special time. Rio was too expensive and Salvador too far to travel in the time we had. We had read about some super-clubs with world class DJs performing special Carnaval sets in southern Brazil. So with this in mind a circuitous route brought us to the Ilha de Santa Catarina, Florianopolis. A dip in fortunes and dodgy bus routes left us stranded on an empty road, knocking on doors searching for an illusive guesthouse. ... read more

Day 16 was spent trapped on another hefty long journey . When we arrived at the main bus terminal we had to then catch a bus to a smaller terminal to then catch a local bus to our lovely little apartment. It worked out about the same price each as sharing a dorm in a hostel so for 3 or 4 nights me, Laura and Jo had our own kitchen, living room and outside pool...heaven! Plus the woman that runs it is the most helpful person and so motherly. Her little girl and her friends were throwing waterbombs at each other over the pool whilst us three were sunbathing- nice little cool down! Overall it was a lovely little family run place and I definitely recommend it. Florianopolis is beautiful...me and Jo went to the beach ... read more

Florianopolis is the beach capital of south east Brasil, with arguably some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the region. One thing is for sure – there is no short supply of beaches here. Over six days in the southern state of Santa Catarina, Sarah and I visited at least as many beaches and saw countless others. The Atlantic Ocean caresses the south east state of Santa Catarina. The state capital is Florianopolis (Floripa) which boasts some of the highest standards of living in Latin America. Most of its inhabitants are descendants of Portuguese, German and Italian immigrants. With our Portuguese being basically non-existent and many locals not speaking English, it was quite fun to be able to at least speak German with some of the residents. Myself and Sarah, along with our friend ... read more

Friday 8th October 2010 Arriving in Florianopolis city centre late morning with another long bus to Ilha Santa Caterina (following poor directions), we met a friendly local who pointed out the sites and helped us find our way. We were welcomed by the owner, Roberta, when we arrived at “Way2Go” hostel, she advised us to grab a local boat up the lake to Costa Lagoa for lunch, so we headed out but missed the hourly boat, then the heavens opened & wind picked up so we decided to lunch in the comfort of our warm, dry hostel instead. We were in Lagoa, a small lively town on Ilha Santa Caterina - we hit the town that night and stumbled across a real gem called the Big Bamboo, which, for obvious reasons looked like it belonged on ... read more

After arriving at the quaint colonial town of Paraty, we located our hostel along a cobbled street only to have our Brazilian, Portuguese speaking, hostess block the door and pull a scrap of paper out of her pocket that said OTHER HOSTEL. After a confusing conversation which included lots of pointing she finally took us to another hostel where the owner spoke as much english as we do Portuguese. We finally managed to get a room and strolled around the historical town for the afternoon. The town was hosting a food festival at the weekend so we explored the local bars and found some live Brazilian music. On day 2 we decided to join a boat trip to visit local islands which s really cool. What is better than being on a boat with cold beers, ... read more

Saudades de Floripa, ... read more

OK, this is long overdue, but given the insistence of some of you, here is an entry about Brazilian beaches. Most of the pictures (but not all) are taken in Praia dos Ingleses in Florianopolis, SC. It is a popular beach where families from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and even Paraguay come and enjoy their summer holiday. High season starts goes from Christmas to Carnival. During that period, about 20 to 25 thousand people are on the beach each day. The locals understood of course that so many people together present an unique opportunity to sell. So the beach becomes, among other things, a market. If you want to know what is sold, just have a look at our pictures. You will also see what else I did there when I was not taking pictures. Enjoy!... read more
