Verrückt was die Menschen so bauen.

Dann stand ... read more

Do. Do dooo, do doo, do do do: Tall and tan and young and lovely, The girl from Ipanema goes walking, And when she passes, each one she passes goes - ah, When she walks, she's like a samba That swings so cool and sways so gentle That when she passes, each one she passes goes - ooh -----The Girl form Ipanema, by Astrud Gilberto (check out this DATED vid!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJkxFhFRFDA) Well, the girl from Ipanema I am NOT! But, post carnaval, when we actually stayed within the city, we were lucky enough to stay in this super fancy area of the city. It's like the Cherry Creek of Rio! You could shop for days on end, the restaurants are endless, the beaches are always open. And lucky for us, a friend of Shelly's (John's Stepma) ... read more

Well it has only been a week, but what a week!! Places Visited: Rio de Janeiro It may surprise you to learn that i have actually endured about 5 days of on-off Thunderstorms and rain in Rio. But before you start reaching for the violins i should also point out that when it rains here, the temperature has remained in the mid 20s, and following the showers we tend to then get engulfed in blazing sunshine. So the hotel i was staying at in Rio was certainally at the basic end of low cost accommodation. I was in a 5 bed dorm that had been crammed into a room that was just about big enough for one. then there were the showers where you actually felt cleaner before you went in. Questions began to arise in ... read more

So we headed off for Rio, on a 'speedy connections' from ihla grande that ended up taking 6 hours. This was because the mini bus broke down in the middle of the busiest road into Rio in the middle of the day. On top of this we broke down next to the most polluted river we had ever seen. Oh yeah and the cause of the pollution was to the other side of us- a nice big favella. Ever the anthropologists Laura and I were grateful when we eventually got to the posh area of Rio, Leblon. As the weather wasn't the greatest when we got there we thought we'd be cultural and take in a museum and look at some of the older parts of the city. For anyone interested the exhibition was of Escher ... read more

I’m pretty sceptical when I hear a title similar to this, especially as when in New Zealand I saw something with the label “probably the biggest hedge in the Southern hemisphere”, but after being in Rio during Carnival I have no doubts over this assertion. I don’t think Brazilians ever sleep as over the 5 days I was there the party was happening 24/7 all over the city. If you weren’t at a bloco (a street party with more people than pavement), a bar (where the action also spills on to the street as the music is that loud) or the hostel (where it was hard to tell the staff apart from the backpackers as everyone was dressed up and drinking) then you still had no doubts as to whether Carnival was going on as samba ... read more

Day 5 - Dec 25 - Rio De Janerio - Impanema: Christmas day was a a nice sunny day and most things were closed so we decided to make it our beach day. After our usual breakfast in our hotel, we went out to get our beach supplies such as water, money, etc. We decide to go to Impanema beach to layout on the beach. We rented our beach chairs and umbellas, ordered some drinks and watched the world go by. Impanema is a beautiful beach with lots of eye candy! During lunch, we went to have their famous grilled chicken. It sort of like bake/barbecue chickens and tasted very good. This has turned out to be our main meal here. We have tried various fancy resturants near our hotel but did not like much of ... read more

Breakfast followed lunch en route from Sydney to Rio. Leaving at 11am on Monday morning, I arrived in Buenos Aires at 10am that day for a connecting flight to Rio flying over in the incredibly dense urban area of Sao Paulo. Exhausted, I was finally in Rio at around 8pm and took a shuttlebus from the airport through the city to Ipanema beach. Rio is divided into two districts: Zona Norte, a more industrial, working class area and home to the Maracana stadium - the largest in the world, which is currently closed in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The famed and beautiful city beaches are in Zona Sul, along with most of the iconic tourist attractions in Rio and Centro, the central business district. After recovering, I did the mandatory city sightseeing. It ... read more
