Flew from London via JFK. Got fire access seats both times so not too bad. Arrived in rio to carnage trying to get through customs - massive queues to start with, which then descended into a big mess as people tried to jump it. Worked in our favour - I was in the loo at the time but suspect Hattie started it. Shared a taxi to the hostel with a couple of Americans who ends up pretty much paying for the whole thing - very generous. hostel really nice, got a picnic and had on ipanema beach, then walked along it and went swimming. Beautiful day. Then took Hattie in a swan pedalo on the lake here. Very nice. Trying to not fall.asleep before 8pm!... read more

Second day in Rio. Nice weather, crowded and not like in the books : ) We do not advise to travel via Atlanta to Rio, 25 hours travelling. Arriving in Atlanta, we had to wait 2 hours to pass the customs - IT problems and the airport was stuck totally. Hmmm IT, Many people missed their connection.... Then we arrived in Rio without luggage. Still waiting on it ; ) It should arrive today, but that's what they told us yesterday too. Welcome to Brazil! Relaxing day at Ipanema and Copacobana - nice views and so many people chilling around.... read more

Machu Picchu exceeded our expectations because of its amazing, isolated location and the extent of the Inca ruins. It was a spectacular delight archaeologically and geographically when you consider the Incas, so many centuries ago, selecting such a remote, steep and jungle covered terrain to build such a huge community. The trek up to the Sun gate was an hour's slog in drizzle and mist and there was no view at the top. However our patience was rewarded and eventually the mists cleared and the view to the bottom of the river valleys and over huge mountains was stupendous! It was a rewarding but tiring few days getting up very early and walking all day and so we were pleased to arrive in a "Chelsea" area of Buenos Aires called Palermo Soho. Again more walking but ... read more

Its just over a week since carnival ended and in my head I’m still attempting to process the chaotic melee that was Rio at carnival time. Its billed as the biggest party on earth and that’s a pretty spot on description but one that really doesn’t do it justice, it felt like more than just a party, it was more than just a party! With an estimated 2 million people a day taking to the streets it’s a long weekend of total madness. The once quiet streets become impromptu dance floors, beaches turn into outdoor night clubs and everywhere you look you’re just as likely to see a guy dresses as a fairy – replete with 6foot high wings – as in a tuxedo, at carnival time anything goes and it really does. Arriving into Rio ... read more

Staying at a fab little guest house called Margaridas Pousada near the seafront in Ipanema. Walked along beach in the morning, full of trendy Brazilians sunbathing & swimming - may not have entirely blended in with my English tourist styling...Later on caught cablecar up Sugarloaf mountain, fantastic views as sun set over mountains & city lights came on - perfect location for first beer of the trip.... read more

Cleiton is Brazilian, and he says that Rio is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. But unfortunately, NOT safe. Our only advice, is take with you whatever that if you lose, or get stollen it will not be missed. So if you care about that expensive watch, rings, jewelry, etc LEAVE IT in the hotel. Our money ALWAYS, goes in our socks ( which has saved our behinds before). Ipanema and Copacabana is where most tourists hang. Ipanema is much more gay. Rua Farme de Amoedo is the gay street, which is between Posto 8 and 9 ( life guard stations), also the best gay beach ( voted one of the Top 10 in the world). Rio is so expensive, the only cheap thing is still the food! Enjoy your Churrasco (brazilian BBQ) ... read more

Our last long distance jounrey went fine as we are rather used to them know, however once we got dropped off in Sao Paulo the fun began! Our bus arrived a few hours early so we arrived at 4am with no clue on where we were staying and as it is such a massive city this proved to be a major flaw. We waited an hour or 2 for the tourist information to open, which it didnt, so just got what we thought was the closest hostel in our lonely planet book and ordered a taxi in which the wrong area was written down for the driver, so ended up in the middle of what looked like the business district at 8am with no clue on what we were doing with our heavy bags, in the ... read more

Another new country to explore and sadly the last one of the trip. We finally made it to Brazil, land of big bums and tiny swimsuits. As always the journey to a new place is one to mention. For once it wasnt a case of horrible buses or me being sick but instead a first class flight from Peru to Brazil, oh yeah! Nothing quite like a bit of first class after 5 months of cheap travel. First stop was Rio De Janeiro and Ipanema beach. Its no lie the people in Rio are extremely fit, buffed up and surprisngly gay. I didnt realise just how large the gay community in Ipanema would be. That was my first observation, the second was that Brazilians dont seem to wear any clothes, they really do walk around in ... read more

Hey guys, as promised first update, arrived safely, travelling about 22 hours straight now, and my day in Rio has just begun, jet lag´s bound to catch up with me soon!! Sadly my phone is opting out of any local network so won´t be able to text till I get that sorted!! The internet is also not included in my hostel so won´t be updating as regularly as I´d hoped!! But I´m hear its very exciting, surrounded by water and the amount of trees everywhere, I thought Ireland was green!! Caught a quick distant glimpse of the Christ as iconic for Rio now as the eiffel tower is for paris and Big Ben is for London!! It´s only 10am and it´s already ¨26 degrees, sweltering heat and I think I forgot my sunglasses!! if that´s all ... read more
