Puerto Ayora and the Tortoise Sanctuary We arrived on The Galapagos Islands after a very comfortable hour flight from Guayaquil. Completely over excited but not quite as noisy as the 50 school children who we'd shared the flight with we made our way with guide Miguel to our home for the next 8 days - The Treasure of Galapagos catamaran (TOG). The boat was out of this world and more spacious and luxurious than most of the hostels and hotels we'd stayed in to date. After a 3 course lunch on the TOG we headed out to the highlands to look at Giant Tortoises in the wild. I know they're called Giant Galapagos tortoises but I wasn't really prepared for the size of them. They really are huge! It was amazing to see them roaming around ... read more

After scouring the tour companies in Arequipa for a good deal on a Colca Canyon tour we decided to trust some of the Trip Advisor reviews and get in touch with a local private guide called Carlitos. After a few e-mails and a delicious meal in Crepissimo with Carlitos we decided on a 3 day 2 night tour to the canyon. From the moment Carlitos picked us up from Casa de Ana (30 minutes late...heart beat racing...we've been duped arrrggghhh!!) to the moment we left him 3 days later it was a true adventure and not a dull moment in sight! We arrived at the Arequipa bus terminal to board the local bus to Cabanaconde with seconds to spare, which would have been fine if we hadn't had to pay to queue and pay the stupid ... read more

Goodbye Unaytambo, Hello Salkantay Why is it that all good treks have to start with such an unsociable wake up call? this time it was 5am. I was extremely sad to say goodbye to the Unaytambo hotel in Cusco where we had just spent a wonderfully luxurious 4 days for my birthday. We drove out of Cusco towards Sayllapata where we would start our 4 day trek. After a couple of hours and a stop for some breakfast we were at the start ofthe trail. The donkeys were loaded up with all of the camping gear, food and our personal baggage (thank you Qénte!) whilst we readied ourselves for the off. We were already at 3200m above sea level and during the day we would climb another 1000m to reach our campsite at Soyrococha. Breathing was ... read more

After a 27 hour bus journey from hell the Iguazu Falls had a lot to make up for. I didn´t even know it was possible to spend 27 hours on a bus. I also didn´t know that freewheeling down every hill encountered was a kocher way to drive a bus but apparently, in Brazil, it is. Scary. For the record never travel with a bus company called Pluma. Our bus broke down every 10km and we had to change it twice. The air conditioning was also knackardo. If it did manage to blow out cold air it also spat cold water all over Edd and I. Imagine how funny Edd thought that was...now imagine spending 27 hours on said bus next to Edd...... So the Iguazu falls definitely needed to be mindblowing. They did not let ... read more
