The Brasilian part of the famous Iguazu falls in Parque Nacional do Iguacu. I was there on Sunday and there were plenty of people, maybe also because on Tuesday there was national holiday in Brasil and all the people left the cities. Nevertheless the view of the falls is spectacular, even if you don't come so close to the falls, but you get a good overview of the size of the falls. It is 275 falls (depending on the year period and the amount of water) from 40 to 80 meters height....... read more

I'm here!

The title of our GAP tour is "In Search of Iguazu" referring to the huge collection of waterfalls on the Brazil/Argentina border. To me they were famous for appearing in the James Bond movie Moonraker, the scene where the boat pretty much turns into a handglider leaving Jaws and the other villans to go over the top. So after our long journey from Sao Paulo, we quickly checked in, breakfasted and got on over to the Brazillian side of the falls. The idea of the trip is that you vist the Brazil side to get the ´"overview" of it all from afar, and this is what we got, Im am no that literate that I can use words to describe these falls, and there are hundreds of them,so I´ll let my pictures tell the story. It ... read more

So hi from Brazil again!! As most of you know, we are doing a 30-day Tucan Tour from Puerto Iguazu all the way to Lima, Peru. So that's what we had the meeting for yesterday, and so from now on (til 14th Nov), everywhere we go we are with a whole bunch of others and in an organised setting. We get to do a lot of our own optional excursions, so that's pretty cool too!! Just thought i'd let you know!! Now that that's done, let's move onto the 1st "real" day of our tour... This day started very loudly!! With Rain!! It was absolutely bucketing it down and there was thunder and the power was out at 6am. This didn't mean too much, so we packed our bags as we were leaving this hotel and ... read more

So... on Wednesday, I had my only day off that I'm going to have before the Christmas holidays. Did I decide to have a nice relaxing day? Of course not... off to Brazil I went! The waterfalls are AMAZING. The suspense is slowly built up before you see them. One bus from Foz do Iguacu to the park, another bus when in the park to the start of the trail, on the bus you can see the spray from the waterfalls hitting the windscreen, then you can hear this thunderous sound in the distance... get off the bus, walk a little bit, and there is your first view of the waterfalls... This first view is from quite a distance, and as you walk around the path there are various viewing platforms as you get closer ... read more

Day 14 & 15-19th and 20th September Well it’s Sunday in Foz do Iguacu and to our shock and surprise everything is closed! Living in London and coming from Rio de Janeiro, we’re used to being able to do something every day. Not in this town! The only things that are open are the restaurants, and while I would love to spend all my life eating, I would be a) very sick and b) very fat so it’s not really an option. However we did go to my new favourite restaurant, ‘Buffalo Branco Churrascaria’ basically an all you can eat BBQ. Holy fillet mignon it was good, you get your rice, salad, potatoes, veg etc from the buffet and then waiters walk around the tables with all different types of barbequed meat. I had chicken, chicken ... read more

Day 13-18th September-Part 2 Yes we did so much on day 13 it requires two blogs! It’s actually more to do with the amount of photos we took. You’re only allowed 100 per blog and we took a whopping 900, so we decided to split the day out as there are lots of good ones! We left the bird park and wandered over to the Parque Nacional, not for the first time, I had a good giggle to myself at how inaccurate our guidebook is. It reassured us that the entrance fee to the National Park for Iguacu Falls was $2.50 US. Lies! It is in fact R$37 which is about $18. Not that it bothered us, but it was good for a laugh! We bought our tickets and joined the queue for the bus to ... read more

Day 13 - 18 September-Part 1 Aaaaah to sleep well is a blessing... except there is a bird that lives in a tree near our window and boy does it make a racket!, its call actually sounds like the noise a cat would make if you gave it L.S.D. told it that all dogs are out to get it, blindfolded, shaved, greased it up and then repeatedly threw it against a chalk board. So we only sleep well till about 8am which will have to do since Liz has told me I am not allowed a pellet gun. On day 13 we woke up at 8 to our new alarm call, we’d agreed over our caiparinias the night before to go to the Bird Park and then Brazilian side of the falls in the afternoon, the ... read more

Day 12-17th September Another day, the same bus. We were finding it pretty hard going by this point, and to make matters worse, the smell from the toilet at the back of the bus had made its way to the front of the bus where we were. Bad bad times. I spent the last 3 hours of the journey breathing through my fleece and feeling sick. We were very relieved when we eventually arrived in Foz at 12:50! We grabbed our bags, which had made it safely and I then proceeded to have our second random meeting of our trip, if there are any old Highworth girls reading this, I bumped into Miana, turns out she and her sister had been on the same bus as us! 12 days on the road and we’ve already bumped ... read more

A whole series of waterfalls sitting on the border between Brazil and Argetina, the Iguazu Falls are even more amazing and spectacular than we imagined. After seeing many photos from friends who have been, we knew that they were pretty impressive, but nothing can prepare you for the sheer scale of them.  We spent time on both the Brazilian and Argentine sides of the falls as we were told 'Brazil has the panorama, Argentina has the falls'... Or as they each say respectively 'our side is better'!  It would seem both offer a different view and experience and we had a brilliant time in each. Although it is true that in Argentina you can get more up close and personal with the falls... In a boat! We got completely soaked as we sped down the rapids ... read more

Before our midday bus to Rio, we squeezed in a trip to the bird park near our hostel. Over the course of the morning I developed a number of “new favourite birds” including the macaw and toucan (a post previously taken by the British mallard!). We also saw some strange critters such as the Cassowary and Harpy Eagle (the world’s most powerful raptor!), and a little grey bird that appeared to be doing a mating dance with Chris’s shoe! At midday we boarded our 24 hour bus to Rio, our last bus of the trip. More specifically, this was our 20th public bus, 11 of which travelled overnight. I decided to add up all the hours we spent on the road (including all those days travelling on the Kumuka truck, but excluding day trips sightsee-ing and ... read more
