Currently in Pisac in the Sacred Valley in Peru!! (Oct. 13th, 2013) Well, we have finished our tour of the Salar de Uyuni (Salt Flats outside of Uyuni) and i have to admit that it was totally fantastic!! Everything was just perfect! I hope to give you some of the details in the following... So, our arrival in Uyuni was not very fun since Lisa was not feeling very well. The train from Oruro was fun and an interesting experience. About an hour´s out of Uyuni, we actually derailed in the desert!! And the train employees worked for about an hour and a half to (eventually) successfully put the engine back onto the track! It was amazing and I wished that I could´ve seen what they were doing but we weren´t allowed to exit the train. ... read more

Remote, Touristy Uyuni Yikes--I had only five days left on my Bolivian visa! Time to leave La Paz, Bolivia's capital (the highest in the world) and head to remote Uyuni for a tour of one of the country's highlights--the Salar de Uyuni. Barring another Bolivian roadblock or problems with the tour jeep, I would be deposited at the Chilean border on August 15, the last day of my visa--ah, life on the edge. In La Paz, I boarded a sweltering bus full of locals to ugly Oruro where I had a long layover before boarding my freezing, budget compartment on the Wara Wara del Sur train that chugged me to Uyuni at 3 am. Fortunately, the hotel I wanted was a short walk away and had a duvet on my bed. At 3700 mts/12,000 ft, Uyuni ... read more

With sore muscles we never knew we had, from the horseriding, we jumped into a 4x4 jeep with two ozzies, a cook, and a guide and started our 4 day trip covering the south of Bolivia which on day 4 we end up at Salar de Uyuni. Day 1 The first day was spent mostly in the jeep covering as much distance as possible - we climbed and climbed and looked down the sheer drops of the rugged landscape which was more like dessert than what we imagined from Bolivia- which was rainforest...We all had our first of many "baños naturales" experiences (going to the toilet outside, without ANY cover), and saw lots of llamas, alpacas, deer and birds. We stayed in rooms in a remote village which was up high and met the rest our ... read more

A 36 hour bus ride........... ouch! I started to forget what the outside world was like. We arrived in a place called Jujuy, said ´who who-ey´, a small town in Northern Argentina. It was pretty much non-descript, but we decided to mix it with the locals and ended up eating some really good food there. Very much needed after the bus journey. After a night in Jujuy it was another bus journey, only a 6 hour one this time..... piece of cake. Our eyes were on a new country. It was sad to be leaving Argentina as we´ve seen so much, but we were looking forward to arriving in this new country..... Bolivia! It was early afternoon when we arrived at a little border town called La Quiaca. The first thing I noticed is how hot ... read more

After a rubbish nights sleep caused by otherwise friendly room mates in La Paz I finally buckled and shelled out the ten bucks for my first own room on the trip with a double bed, private bathroom and balcony directly overlooking Lake Titicaca. Money well spent, even if the walls were a hideous shade of peach and the electric shower has wires poking out of the top. Dad would be horrified. This massive lake is mistakenly called the highest navigable lake in the world and is so large it is shared by Bolivia and Peru. The Bolivian jumping off point is the original Copacabana, a sweet little town that has Victorian age attractions on the waters edge like swans pedallos, and some newer attractions like those weird plastic bubbles you can run across the water in. ... read more

It’s 4 weeks until we leave Bolivia after 10 years here. Our final official Latin Link activity is the Team retreat. Andrea being a professional retreat leader has been asked to lead the 2 day retreat. She’s chosen the title “The art of letting go” which is fitting for us. So the past few weeks have seen Andrea spending many hours writing the material. We’ve decided we’d like to visit some friends (Walter, Adela, Brisa and Cielo) who live in Tarija and we’ll take in Concepción and Santa Cruz whilst we’re at it. Today Wednesday we’re up at 5:30am. It’s cold in Cochabamba this morning and making the porridge the milk seems off. I open another bag of milk and that’s off too, so give up on the porridge. We’ve run out of tea bags too ... read more

22/7-2013: Got up at 5 to leave San Pedro. We headed towards Bolivia at 6:30 and on the way we had the most amazing view of the Andes. Just before the boarder to Bolivia we saw a beautiful laguna with a couple of alpacas and a lot of flamencos around. It was really easy to cross the boarder and before we knew it our time in Chile was over. First stop was a viewpoint to see Volcano Ollaque from the Bolivia side. We also saw Laguna Negra where we stopped to have lunch but the wind was really hard so we had to eat in the car. Next up we saw Valle de Rocas, a valley full of volcanic rocks. All sights where really beautiful and all along the way we could see dessert with the ... read more

I arrived in Tupiza with Mariano and a couple of Italians we had met at the border. It was immediately apparent my money would go a lot further in Bolivia, as we managed to find a hostel with beds for 25 Bolivianos per night (around £2.50)! We went out for dinner as a group and it was clear my Spanish had a long way to go, as I could barely follow the conversation. Although my main reason for being in Tupiza was to book a tour to Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, I found the town pleasant and friendly. I spent a good few hours exploring the Valle de los Machos, which was walkable from town, and saw the rock formations "Canyon del Inca" and "Puerta del Diablo". Tupiza was also a place ... read more
