The archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, split between Chile and Argentina, forms the southernmost point of the South American continent. Of the many islands that make up the archipelago, only the largest, Isla Grande (twice the size of Wales), has a large population base. From Punta Arenas on the Chilean mainland, I caught a bus (8 hours) to the Argentinean side of the island, catching a ferry in the process, and from which I was lucky enough to glimpse 2 dolphins swimming off the bow, and later one Magellanic Penguin. As we passed through it on the bus, the Chilean side of the island looked beauctiful, with flamingo-filled lagoons and giant expanses of nothingness. The biggest town on the Chilean side has a mere 5,000 people, so the tourist infrastructure does not really exist. Virtually all ... read more

When things are too good to be true, they usually are. We left off in Junin de los Andes in a warm beds and house, our car issues had seemed to be solved; our transportations to the end of the world and back home again had been planned and paid for. However, yet again, our plan never unfolded the way it was intended to. Flights were changed, then canceled, then re-purchased, then canceled again. Not only were we not on the same flight anymore but we weren’t even leaving the country on the same day. Lets break this down… We left Junin de los Andes on our purchased bus tickets and were to make a few stops along the way. (Carl insert the stops.. I don’t have my tickets on me or the towns…) One great ... read more

I retired in February 2008 and to celebrate such a momentous "Life Event" going on a major trip seemed more attractive than just applying for my free bus travel pass to mark the transition from employed person to retiree. South America as a destination always had a pull especially following the fleeting visit we had made a few years back to see the Iguazu Falls. On that occasion we had passed through Buenos Aires and on the back of the little we had seen it was agreed that Argentina might be more worthy of examination than just the 4 days we had spent dashing up to the magnificent Falls and then returning breathless to the UK. So it was in the months prior to my departing the working life that an itinery was put together which ... read more

No-one hurried to get up as we had no idea when our truck would be fixed. Turned out to be a good day, it was Malvinas Day - like our 11/11 Remembrance Sunday but to commemorate the Falklands War. The Argentine president was in town so we caught a glimpse of her, listened to her speech (keeping our distance and avoiding speaking English!) and saw the army band play what was presumably the National anthem. Then off to a quirky little cafe for my first taste of mate (Taryn was the only one brave enough to actually order it). It was only drinkable with sugar and after sufficient watering down! But I could grow accustomed to it. Back at camp we were told our truck was fixed but that we couldn’t leave until the next morning. ... read more

Hola, all my travel blog followers I appreciate all the comments and those wishing me well along my journey. As the title indicates, I have travelled the distance of Peru all the way to the tip of South America to the city of Ushuaia in Tierra de Fuego on buses. Its been a great journey with so much diversity of landscapes meeting all sorts of people from locals to fellow backpackers. The last segement to the bottom was filled with spectacular scenery from Torres de Paine in the Chiliean patagonia to Ushuaia in Argentina. Torres de Paine is the big name natianal park that tourist flock to in Chile. The main attraction is the W circuit of 4-5 days or the Circuit which takes 10 days of trekking. I did a quick modified portion of ... read more

Another lie in until 8 and then off to the Tierra del Fuego National Park for a day of hiking. We were recommended the 8km walk, which it was suggested would take 3 hours. However with a group of 11 people, with 11 cameras and varying levels of fitness it took us closer to 4 or 5. The scenery was magical, the first 4km took us along the coast of the Beagle Channel, which looked like something out of a fairy tale - beautifully still water flanked by banks of green rock and therefore green sand and pebble beaches. The second 4km saw us split off into 3 groups of different paces, me and Taryn the middle group, trying to hold the other two relatively close together. By the end of the hike we were pretty ... read more

Amazing lie in until 8am, and we emerged to a beautiful sunny day, definitely not what we expected from the southern most city in the world, Ushuaia. We spent the morning exploring the picturesque city, surrounded by snow capped mountains. We were a little wary of the demonstrations taking place outside the police station - angry Argentineans crashing on drums amid signs saying "wait until April 2nd" (in Spanish!) which is a national holiday to commemorate the Falkland Islands war, the islands which Argentina still claim to be theirs ("Las Malvinas son y seran Argentinian") The afternoon saw us on a 5 hour Beagle Channel cruise. We got right up close to an island of cormorants, one of sea lions and best of all a penguin colony. Watching them swim to shore was the most entertaining ... read more

We were all woken at 4:30 this morning, for a 5am breakfast, cursing and swearing about how cold it was and wondering why we would still be camping when we reached Ushuaia, a stone’s throw from the bloody Antarctic! The thermals are on and will probably not come off for the next week as it will only get colder! Luckily the bus has heating, so we could catch up on sleep in comfort. To get to Ushuaia we had to make 2 border crossings (Argentina to Chile and vice versa) and a ferry crossing, during which a "tonina" dolphin and a penguin swam alongside us! Looking forward to the Beagle Channel crossing! Into Chile and the landscape changed once again, to lush green hillsides bordering bumpy gravel roads. On the border back into Argentina the truck ... read more
