OUCH. That’s all I can say about the morning of the 8th of March. I was definitely hung over. Possibly still drunk. And amongst all the revelry of the night before I’d not gotten around to packing my bags. There wasn’t much to do, but I was supposed to have my bags packed, ready and waiting outside my door at 5am. And it was now 6am. But never fear. I still had my bags with me by the time I got to my hotel a couple of hours later. At which point we discovered that Hotel Ushuaia was NOT in a convenient location and I also wouldn't say it was particularly nice either. But that's what you get when you don't bother doing any research I guess. But at least Sara, Reid, Lillian and Terry were ... read more

Prechod cez hranice Chile - Argentina prebehol tentoraz bez problemov.

Today we decided to go to Tierra del Fuego National Park for a short hike and take it easy the rest of the day. A round-trip transfer costs $70 ARS from the main bus stop and it took less than 30 minutes to get there. We decided to hike the easy Coastal Trail which took us about 2:30 hours. Maybe because it’s very much like hiking on the west coast of Canada I didn’t find it as rewarding as hiking in Patagonia. In the afternoon I went back to the water front and walked around town. Apparently many stores close for a bit in the afternoon for some siesta. There was the option to hike up to Martial Glacier for better views of Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel, but I had seen enough glaciers already and ... read more

Ushuaia calls itself Fin del Mundo (End of the World). It’s the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the world. It’s located on the southern coast of the island of Tierra del Fuego, with Martial mountain range to the north and Beagle Channel to the south. We started the day with a cruise of the Beagle Channel. The onboard guide was very informative but I could not remember much. The boat ride was choppy at times and one passenger looked ill the whole time. I was thankful that I don’t suffer from motion sickness. We saw the iconic Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, cruised by small islands with sea lions, birds (mostly cormorants, a few seagulls and other birds I don’t know the names to), and made a stop on ... read more

The longest bus ride of the trip – 12 hours – to Fin del Mundo, Ushuaia, included a 20 minute ferry ride where we saw some porpoises (I think, rather than dolphins). The bus made a few stops along the way, including Chilean border town San Sebastian where I managed to spend all of my Chilean pesos. The border crossing took much less time than when we crossed over from Argentina and we didn’t need to get our bags x-rayed. It rained most of the day, all the way to Ushuaia, but there were some spectacular rainbows. Our B&B in Ushuaia (Las Retamas) run by Monica was probably the best place we stayed at during the trip. It’s about 15-minute walk to the main street but highly recommended! As we were in a seaside city, I ... read more

So we overnighted in Ushuaia and woke late for our last day here. We had until 4 pm to get everything done that we needed to do and we had an abundance of time for that since we needed to be checked out at 10. We were slightly concerned because our instructions were to leave our bags at reception and they would make in onto the expedition and be waiting for us no worries. But since this wasn't the normal hotel would that work? Just in case I haven't mentioned it up until now, my friends from the first part of this great big tour were: Sara and Ried - 28 / 29 yo Radiologists from the Gold Coast (NOT a couple); Lillian - a 34 yo writer from Adelaide; Stephanie - a 26 yo from ... read more

Hallo.

The drive from my hotel in Buenos Aires I saw lots of dogs... not quite sure what I was expecting but I definitely wasn't expecting so many dogs. There was one lady who was walking about 6 dogs all at the same time. It was a long wait at the airport since I got there around 10:20 and my flight wasn't until 13:00 but that was fine. I just sat and read and drank my first cerveza of the trip. I guess I kinda cheated though I got Stella since I knew I'd like it. Only $5 for Stella and that was airport prices. Not too bad I don't think. Stupidly I chose not to eat since I thought they'd give us something on the plane. But I don't think you could really call what they ... read more

As good as Buenos Aires was we thought we shouldn't be so close to Uruguay without paying a visit. Our choice of ferry to Colonia, Uruguay was either at 8:45 a.m. or at 12 noon - luckily for us the 8:45 was full so we had to have a bit of a lie in. We were obviously gutted! We arrived in Colonia at 1:30 and headed to the old town, around the coastline to the south; as you go more inland and north you hit the new town. The difference between to the two is strikingly obvious. We spent most of our day walking around the old town, following a map we had picked up at the port. It had 16 points of interest so we made sure we did them all, though it's such a ... read more

After a great nights sleep, and the marathon bus ride the day prior, it was really nice to know that we were getting up to head out for a cruise on the Beagle Channel. Once again, we flung open the curtains to see beautiful blue skies, we really were blessed with weather for our entire trip! We headed down to the local harbour where we boarded our cruise for a three hour trip around the channel. Our first destination was the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, famously touted as the southern most lighthouse in the world, even though there is another one further south (and if my memory serves me correctly to the east)! After growing up on the Shipwreck Coast, and seeing a number of lighthouses, I was expecting it to be similar to the one that ... read more
