Hello Everyone feel free to write a comment on the blog and we will try to respond, its nice to hear from people We are now in Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world, after takng a 3.5 hour flight from Buenos Aires. It is really beautiful here, the city is small and surrounded by the snowcapped mountains of the Andes at the back and the Beagle channel at the front. We went for an afternoon cruise on the Beagle yesterday which was fantastic. We cruised out down the channel to see sea lion and bird colonies and to trek on one of the most southerly islands in the world. The view down the channel was amazing with just antartica 1000kms to the south of us. we also vsited the most southerly lighthouse in the ... read more

We arrived in Chile in San Pedro de Atacama after finally hitting the tarmac following days of gravel and sandy roads in the Bolivian altiplano. San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis in the desert with snow tipped volcanoes to the east. It was so good to come back to a lower altitude with a clearer head, however, we were overwhelmed by the number of tourists and the exorbitant prices for food and accommodation in this quaint desert outpost. We continued south to Antofogasta through the amazing Atacama desert via Calama, a dusty town based on copper mining, then passed the Tropic of Capricorn. We loved the fabulous sand and stone desert landscapes with lots of hills and barren rocky mountains. We passed numerous mines and ruins of adobe houses that were once small mining villages ... read more

We are really starting to feel like proper adventurers now as we have been camping almost all over Argentina and barring our stay with Carito in Buenos Aires we have not stayed in a hostel since Montevideo in Uraguay. We arrived in Rio Gallegos hopeing we might catch a bus straight to Ushuaia but had little hope as our guide book says to book a week in advance. We had a plan that I would wait for all our bags off the bus and Anne would run straight to the ticket desk to see if there was any seats left. Our plan worked perfectly and we got two of 4 seats left for the following morning whereas all the other groups were three people and had to wait longer!! Once our tickets were bought we headed ... read more

It is hard to talk about an old memory with enthusiasm but I'll try. I remember that we left Ushuaia huffed and puffed. For some reason for us Ushuaia has a taste of a miss even though looking backwards we got to meet interesting people, Pippa and Catherine, and got to see the beautiful scenery around, but whilst I wanted to do something more adventuristic Liz had a cold and I didn't feel so good to go out to the wild without her. The Gloom - Crossing to Isla Navarino: After spending time with my parents in Buenos Aires and meeting Liz's friends Von and Beth we rushed down to Ushuaia to catch summer. As we do in this trip we took a bus (not a flight) down south, 36 hours to Rio Gallegos and then ... read more

This new adventure begins in the early hours of February 4th - exactly a month after arriving in Buenos Aires by ferry I am leaving from the local airport for the early morning flight all the way down to the very southern most tip of the continent, to Ushuaia. I have a travel wallet full of itineraries, and vouchers for the collection of transport links, hotels and excursions which have all been arranged for me by the excellent independent travel agency Say Hueque during my last week in the city. The first thing to deal with is the immediate change in the climate - from hot and sultry BsAs to snow covered peaks, cold and windy Ushuaia in the course of a 3 hour flight. Smooth transfer and check in to my small and very nice ... read more

Well, we made it to the end of the world. Sort of. The southernmost city in the world, to be precise. Day 8: El Chaltén to El Calafate (Ruta 40) Today was nice. We woke up to find perfectly clear skies, so that we had a completely open view of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, which the day before I had struggled to photograph without clouds completely blocking the view. My dad and I, along with a Werner, Nacho, and Enzo, took a hike up to see the mountain a little closer. We saw a sign at the park entrance that warned us to please not pollute the water with garbage or our own waste - it's one of the only places in the world where you can drink directly from the streams (so, of course, ... read more

I arrived in Ushuaia from El Calafate via LADE flight. During the summer season in Patagonia, it is difficult to find a flight down to Ushuaia from El Calafate, so I was lucky to have found a flight - it was actually less expensive to fly down there, as well as saving me two days on the bus. Touched down in Ushuaia, and as expected, it was cold and rainy even though it was the middle of January (yes, this is their summer season). Rocked up to the Freestyle hostel where I had a reservation. Very nice hostel, great staff, heated floors, and amazing views of the bay from both the common room and my dorm room. After dropping my pack, I went out to Kaupe restuarant for Fuegian Lamb, so amazing! Good start to Ushuaia. ... read more

Been doing lots since the last blog! Had an eventful day when we docked in Punta Aranus, the seas were very rough and stopped the tenders from taking passengers ashore at about 9am. We had planned a day in the town but were 'confined to ship' instead. Scary watching those that took earlier tenders trying to make it back - I would have thrown up!! (Di). Had to use a large barge at 90 degrees to ship to shield the arriving tenders. We had some fun though and took a lesson in the Salsa. I (Di) attempted a 70's 'Name that Tune' quiz - got 7/20. Michael joined me for the answers! Have discovered 'Michael's Bar' (yes it is called that!) where cocktails are free from 4 - 6pm, M's taken a liking to whiskey sour ... read more

On Christmas Day I catched the bus to Bariloche in the Lake District. Bariloche and its surroundings are full of possible day trips and therefore I decided to spend some time here. I arrived after another 20 hour bus drive and got into a really nice hostel with an astonishing view over the lake and the mountains in the background. I took it easy and relaxed for the day before checking out all the possible trips. The first trip the next day lead me to Mount Tronador (Thunder Mountain). After pick up we drove to the National Park and stopped first for a little hike to a waterfall. Following that the road lead further into the park along the shore of a lake, where we stopped for taking pictures of the views. Finally after lunch we ... read more
