Di and Michael Theobalds

We just love travelling! I (Di) am keen on any 'new' ways to communicate so we thought we'd try this 'travel diary' approach so that family and friends can follow our trip to New England this summer.

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 3rd 2010

Our final blog from BA as we while away the hours in the lounge at the airport. Buenos Aires is fabulous (despite lots of rain!) We disembarked from the ship very early (7am) and managed to re-organise our city tour for the morning that we arrived instead of the afternoon, a good move in the end weatherwise. Our tour guide picked us up from the docks, dropped us at the hotel (Alvear Palace) where we received an up-grade on our room (nice start) and had time for a b'fast to die for. The hotel was built in the 1930's, is one of the Leading Hotels in the World group and is absolutely wonderful in all respects. Marble everywhere, very opulent, pool, spa and shops included. Our tour was fabulous, our guide Sandra took us to all ... read more

Continue to thoroughly enjoy our trip and especially now the weather has warmed up since leaving Cape Horn. We enjoyed the Captain's lunch and were nicely fed and entertained as well as the proverbial photo shoot! Have visited Puerto Madryn which was the embarkation point for penguin watching but as it was a 6 hour drive over dusty roads (at a highly extortionate price) we decided to wander around the small but pleasant town buying gifts and sipping beer etc. We've had a couple of days at sea (not consecutively) which has given us the chance to chill out and sunbathe in the the much improved weather (G & T on our deck has become quite the habit). Visited Montevideo yesterday - wow what a city, visit if you can. The ship was 'docked' so we ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia January 24th 2010

Been doing lots since the last blog! Had an eventful day when we docked in Punta Aranus, the seas were very rough and stopped the tenders from taking passengers ashore at about 9am. We had planned a day in the town but were 'confined to ship' instead. Scary watching those that took earlier tenders trying to make it back - I would have thrown up!! (Di). Had to use a large barge at 90 degrees to ship to shield the arriving tenders. We had some fun though and took a lesson in the Salsa. I (Di) attempted a 70's 'Name that Tune' quiz - got 7/20. Michael joined me for the answers! Have discovered 'Michael's Bar' (yes it is called that!) where cocktails are free from 4 - 6pm, M's taken a liking to whiskey sour ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago January 19th 2010

Hi everyone Just remembered how to use our travel blog site ! Got an Internet account now on the cruise ship. Arrived in Santiago Chile on the 15th Jan 2010 with very few hitches (Di lost a jumper at Sao Paulo airport during transfer - oh well). Flights were excellent except they kept feeding us and giving us champagne! Stayed at the Marriot in Santiago, lovely hotel, very luxurious. Managed to see some of the city - went to a local park and used the funicular railway to the top for some great views. The city is very modern, clean and massive (pop about 6 million), we liked it. They had the presidential candidate elections the day we left (Sunday) so everything was closed Sat eve!! Had a nice meal in the hotel though. The transfer ... read more

Europe » France » Corsica September 11th 2008

Heading towards the end of our holiday now. Been on the boat trip to Scandola which was great and a terrific ride - lots of spray and very fast on the return. Weather was nice and calm and sunny. Few more clouds today and temperature 34° C ! Hired a car yesterday and drove along the coast to Ille Rousse and St Florent across the Desert des Aggriates. Former was nice town for shops and latter had fantastic array of boats in the marina (Michael still hasn’t decided which one he wants yet!!) On the return journey we visited the ‘Villages des Artisans’ slightly inland and found Pigna which had lots of little craft shops. Fantastic views, very picturesque and worth the journey. Had supper in town at Santa Maria (Chris and Nancy will appreciate this ... read more

Europe » France » Corsica September 7th 2008

Sunday Have tried several times to log on at the hotel and finally got round all the permissions and French keyboard (struggled to find the '@' key at first)!! Therefore excuse the mis-types and acute accents should they arise (now where the hell is the full stop?!) End of our first week and today is the first sign of any real cloud (hence the blog). Michael has a little heat stroke so I am keeping busy while he sleeps. Corsica (and Calvi in particular) is beautiful. The hotel is very luxurious (clean towels twice a day, breakfasts to die for, 4 pools - one which looks out over the bay, courtesy car service down to town or back whenever you want until 1 am, private beach with all mod cons, daily papers (M’s in heaven) and ... read more

North America » United States » Massachusetts » Cape Cod August 21st 2007

Arrived on the Cod (as they say down here) to a very busy w/e. Been seal watching with 'Capt. Bob' and have been to the beach twice. We also visited the saltmarsh up the coast (which was very interesting) and have a day in Provincetown planned for tomorrow. Bit cloudy today so hoping for better weather for the rest of the week. Can't believe the weather forecasts - they seem very changeable!! It's a real tourist place here with lots of nice shops and we're enjoying the contrast to our previous stops. Haven't eaten so much fish this week - lobster, shrimp (enormous), scallops - all delicious. Think we've gained some weight this holiday unfortunately! The exchange rate is very favourable but we can't quite rush to the $6 000 000 house on the seafront unfortunately. ... read more

North America » United States » Vermont August 16th 2007

About to leave Weston tomorrow (Friday). The Inn is wonderful and the proprietors outstanding - real olde worlde Vermont. Linda and Bob made us feel at home straight away with homemade pastries and lemonade. The dining is the best we've had and matches anything the Michelin stars of Ludlow can offer. Have learnt how maple syrup is made too. Weston itself is quite small but very sweet - the Country Store is famous and absolutely amazing - Di loves it! Nearly bought a Cadillac for $3000 dollars with only 22000 miles on the clock but Michael stopped me just in time. Been to visit the South vermont Art centre in Manchester - very tempted by one particular painting but we resisted. Manchester is a mix of strange shops which look like houses and some outstandingly beautiful ... read more

North America » United States » Vermont » Stowe August 12th 2007

Finished exploring Boston (which we really liked) with a tour of the music shops and bookshops. Persuaded Michael to buy a pair of RayBans in Macey's! Visited various places on the freedom trail some of which were shopping arcades and food malls! Left Boston and drove North calling at Lake Sunapee and Woodstock on route passing through large expanses of pine forests. Arrived in Stowe just in time to catch the last sights of a vintage car rally (their 50th) which blocked most of the streets. Some beautiful old cars though - Mustangs included. Spent today exploring Stowe which has a general store and some quaint little shops. Went up the local mountain (ski runs in winter) in a gondola to get a better view (4000 feet approx) and drove across the valley, very attractive. Michael ... read more

North America » United States » Massachusetts » Boston August 11th 2007

Our first entry. Arrived safe and sound and got re-located to the Hilton Hotel! Got a suite all to ourselves as the hotel we were booked into was booked up. Turned out to be a good move. Room and hotel are lovely, no extra charge. Weather has been very nice on the first day so we did a bus tour, boat cruise across to the islands and walked part of the freedom trail. we really like Boston. Had a brilliant fish supper. Today it rained a bit so we did some 'shopping' (Michaerl loves it!!) and walked around the different districts. Got to know the "T' system well (their underground). Found some very posh shops with lots of designer labels in Copley Square. Had a restless afternoon yesterday - now I know why - how did ... read more
