I spent almost a week in El Calafate, a tourist town in Southern Patagonia and it is a three hour flight down from Buenos Aires. Calafate is the gateway to the Los Glaciares National Park. I stayed in a wonderful hostel, The Marcopolo Inn , just outside the town and a 10 minutes walk to the centre. The hostel is probably the best I ever stayed in and I highly recommend it with its friendly staff. The first four nights I stayed was in a dorm, which was nice and I could not ask for nicer dorm mates. I then spent a few days in Chalten and returned to the hostel for two nights and stayed in a private room, which was great! I felt pampered and the room was more like a hotel room with ... read more

Hola! Pretty late at night now on the 29th Jan but thought I´d do a quick update before heading off to Torres Del Paine for 5 days of hardcore trekking. 23/1/10 Flew from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, which we have immmediately given the nickname Colonel Gaddafi. More snappy. Absolute randomness as we get off the flight and bump into Mr Spivey. A few confused looks between Adam and me as we ask to ourselves ¨is that really Mr Spivey¨ and then finally sum up the courage to ask. It is Mr Spivey and we share some fun Physics/Patagonian related banter. Go to the local shops and buy some brilliantly named chocolate. If Stu is reading, look away now. It was called ¨Rhodesia¨chocolate. Unlike Mugabe´s regime, it leaves a pleasant taste in my mouth. 24/1/10 Wake ... read more

Hello again, As mentioned in the last post our next stop was El Calafate. People come here for the most part for one reason and that´s Perito Moreno Glacier. It´s considered to be the main attraction of Parque Nacional Los Glaciers, and our sole reason for stopping here. Basically, this glacier is unique for a few reasons, 1) it´s huge (not the biggest in the world, but huge nonetheless) measuring 30km long, 5km wide and 60m high 2) it moves alot- up to 2m per day which is tons for a glacier that size. That much movement means lots of huge pieces of ice calving off the glacier face daily (sometimes chunks the size of house which make huge splashes and small tidal waves after falling into the water). 3) it´s very low to sea-level making ... read more

Hola Amigos! I left off in El Bolsón, the town of great jam and no Skype, and from here I took an immense bus journey to El Calafate. If you have a look on a map, it is pretty far! And to give you an idea, the bus left El Bolsón at 11.40am, and arrived into El Calafate at 2.30pm. That is an awfully long time to spend sitting on your bum, and the most comfortable seats had all sold out, so I had to take the 'semi-cama' bus, which is kind of like being on a plane! And they had some of the most awful films as well, seriously, avoid 'White Chicks' and 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry'. The worst thing is, you have no choice but to watch them as the sound ... read more

Hi it is Nitzan. My mom and my brother wrote you about El Chalten and I am going to tell you about El Calafate that is not far away from El Chalten. We arrived to El Calafate at the afternoon. We found a room and then did some food shopping. It was New Year's Eve and we wanted all to eat in a restaurant for new year's eve. When we looked for a restaurant and we discovered that the restaurants are too expensive for our budget or fully booked. Finally after looking in many restaurants, we found the cheapest restaurant that was still expensive. Anyway we had a good meal of meat, we all kissed at midnight and we also saw fireworks. I was excited. The next morning, we woke up early and drove to the ... read more

Day 6 Our driver from yesterday has agreed to take us out to the famous Glacier Moreno. The drive takes about an hour and is well worth it. The paved highway is only 1 1/2 years old and was previously a gravel road. I thank God for the paved road because it is windy enough and with my tendency of motion sickness, I do not need any encouragement to become ill. The driver is well informed of all the local history and is our own private tour guide. He stops at all of the best photo opts and even waits for us while we walk around and take in the scenery. Junior and the driver were conversing in Spanish and kept saying "Su Spido" (sp??) (sounds like speedo) so naturally we laughed and made fun of ... read more

Day 5 Today we head out for El Calafate in Argentina. It was about a 3 hour flight. The airport is small but has a newly paved runway and is surrounded by gorgeous mountains with snow caps. Upon arrival we are allowed the privilage of climbing the spiral stairway to the control tower. Thankfully, Junior is bilingual and is able to converse not only in conversation with the local but also in aeronautical lingo as well. We met the one airtraffic controller and took in the awesome view of the landscape. Following the tower tour we exited the airport and met our driver, Rene. He is quite the chatty cathy, which is good for tourists. He escorted us to our hotel along with providing us an explaination of the name of the city. El Calafate is ... read more

Sitten loppui asfaltt... read more
