So Ushuaia just did not quite happen. I was assured I had a reserva from Rio Gallegos to Ushuaia which I found hard to believe so I was hardly surprised when I got to Rio Gallegos and was told I was not on the passenger list. The trip from Puerto Madryn to Rio Gallegos was entertainment itself. I was at the very front of the bus with 3 Argentines. First of all we played musical chairs so I could get the one seat where the audio was working so I could hear the English and watch the film. It was some dire film with Robert de Niro which clearly never made it to general release. Then I got to answer questions like - What do you think of Camilla? Maradonna? The Argentines? It cracks me up ... read more

- Food: The best steak in the world. Calafate jam made from the fruit that gives the area it´s name. Gorgeous breakfasts. Malbec wine (an Argentinian great). - Area: Small but increasing quickly due to the tourism brought about by the Perito Moreno glacier (one of the world´s natural wonders). Very touristy and expensive but peaceful and beautiful scenary - mountains, lakes, greenery. - People: Laid back and friendly - Weather: Not as cold as I thought it´d be. Fresh blue sky Tue 29th: An early start leaving Buenos Aires to fly to El Calafate. Our first taste of South American ´punctuality´.... I got to learn the workings of airport operation looking out of the window of the airport lounge for hours. But worth the wait. Arrived at a beautiful wooden lodge in the middle of ... read more

I'm sure that I've read somewhere that there are very few life events that stick in the memory into old age. If this is the case, then the four of us filled up one of the few slots on Thursday when we visited Peninsula Valdes. When you last heard from us we'd arrived in Puerto Madryn hoping to see some marine wildlife. The area is most famous for whale watching, but we were told that it wasn't the right time of the year and the only whales we might see if we were lucky were Killer Whales (or Orcas as they are called). As you'll see from the accompanying pictures (as long as I've been able to add them) we were lucky to the extreme. In fact, no end of four leaf clovers, rabbits feet and ... read more

After a quick flight to Buenos Aires from Santiago (2 hours) - the second flight on our round the world ticket - we immediately went to the Aerolineas Argentinas ticket sales counter in the airport to buy our tickets to El Calafate. The flight left next morning, and cost only 300 pesos - about 50 pounds each, bargain. I´ve dated this article 16th December, although we arrived in BA on 15th. We´ll add another article later when we´ve got something more on BA. So, we got to El Calafate and shared a taxi into town with a couple of Frenchies. We found a rather crappy hostal (the Albergue Beunos Aires) but settled for it as it was quite cheap and had a good enough location. We weren´t going to be in El Calafate for very long ... read more

(Approximately 9th) :) Es maravilloso. It's wonderfull. It's incredible, but you can spend hours admire it. And when you see the first floe, you start to cry. It's amazing. And if you're sleeping near from it, you can hear the floeswhen they fall down. Besides, in the summer the night cames at 23hs. I recomend it to all tourist arround the world.... read more
