"I have the feeling that Patagonia is the most desolate of places...a land of exiles, a place of de-territoriality" (Jean Baudrillard) was right. El Calafate is now the worst type of tourist trap. But it wasn't always that way. Mass tourism in Patagonia is a recent thing. Once upon a time it was very different. The old Patagonian Wild West was a land of Pirates, outlaws and rebels. (Maybe its their pirate past that explains the desire to empty the tourists wallets!) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were the most famous of the outlaws who made Patagonia their home. When things were getting too hot for Cassidy and Sundance they settled down for 5 years as respectable stock farmers. The neighbours had no idea that the polite gringos were criminals. But the rural retirement couldn't ... read more

I was sitting in the window seat of a restaurant, just snacking and watching the world go by when I noticed nearly everyone going past was staring in at me!…I was getting a bit self conscious….was it something I was eating? bits of food hanging out of my mouth? fly undone?…..later, as I was walking home, I looked at the window and realised it was a mirror!..everyone had been looking at themselves…hmmm This is totally a tourist town, hordes of touries from all over the world…. cars, buses, bikes of course, 4x4s, trucks, all manner of tour vehicles, and all manner of tour shops, clothing stores (everyone needs a fleece here!) restaurants and bars…only one laundry and a 2 day wait, can’t find a barber shop. When the cruise ships come in the population bursts out ... read more

We caught the bus to El Calafate in Argentina, a short 6 hour journey where we planned to go to see the Perito Moreno Glacier and then move further Northern towards Santa Cruz our Christmas destination. When we arrived we went throught the usual procedures, find somewhere to stay, book tickets to leave then organise trips. El Calafate is quite a touristy little town so finding somewhere to stay was quite easy, however trying to get out on a tight time schedule proved a little more difficult. We tried to book air tickets but unless we wanted to pay about 400 pounds each for Business Class then we could forget that option till the 23rd December. We then went to find a Bus all bus journeys are at least 2/3 days with a hotel break and ... read more

After spending the night at the glacier, we checked into a hostel in El Calafate. El Calafate is a tourist town in Southern Patagonia filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes. Although the Spring tourist season just recently geared up this month, the streets were packed with Euopean tourists who were here to tour the glaciers and explore the mountains. We were aware of many Germans, French, Spanish, Italians, British and Australians but noticed only a handful of Americans in El Calafete and El Chalten. By far, most of our interactions in El Calafate were with Isreali tourists who were in their early twenties and are here for 6 -12 months. At least 14 young Isreali men and women stayed in our hostel during the nights that we spent there. Hundreds of them tour South America as ... read more

From BA we flew down south to Patagonia for a week. Flights were very full so that was our time limit and we decided just to stick to El Calafate and see some glaciars and then to El Chalten for some trekking. El Calafate The first day in El Calafate we did a tour where you get in a boat and visit a whole heap of glaciars. The tour was good but long, it takes over an hour to get there then you are on this boat the whole day sailing around looking at icebergs & glaciars (there is alot in the area) and the boat can seem to be so slow at times. But it is quite cool ( I actually mean that literally as well it was FREEZING!!) Anyway you go and check out ... read more

The journey south from Bariloche started very badly and didn´t get much better! We left 7 hours late and as a result didn´t arrive at the town of Perito Moreno until after 3am. We didn´t stop much at all on route except at petrol stations in the middle of knowhere to fill up. The following morning we were up at 7am to go to see Cueves de los Manos which is a set in a spectacular canyon. Inside the caves there is fantastic hand painting from 9300 years ago (believed to be the oldest evidence of man anywhere in South America). Their remoteness means that very few people see them (100 per day in ´peak season´). This was by far the best bit of the trip as we got to see an Armadillo, lots of the ... read more

We arrived in Bariloche after spending two days camping across the Lake in Villa La Angostura. We stayed in a nice bungalow a few miles up the Lake from the center of town. We enjoyed the great weather and enjoyed walking the steets, taking in the views, and feeling like tourists. A few relaxing days later, we decided to tackle the drive to El Calafate. We headed to El Bolson where we had lunch by a lake which straddled the Argentine- Chile border. El Bolson is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains. There are much fewer tourists here and the town is humble and muy tranquillo. From there, we drove to Esquel where we camped at a small campground outside of town. That evening we invited a young German Doctor and his wife ... read more

Having arrived in Puerto Natales and Lou´s back not fit for hiking yet, we decided to have a few rest days before heading off on the full trek into Torres del Paine. As the town is VERY quiet, we decided booked ourselves onto a day trip to see the Moreno Glacier. Neither of us had really thought about the distance that would be covered. We got on the bus at 7am and didn´t get back to the hostel until 10.30pm..having only spent 2 hours actually at the Moreno Glacier!!...but the scenary on route was amazing, so dramatic and the glacier itself was stunning...well worth the trip..but we would advise making the visit from Argentina, not from Chile! Patagonia is big country.... Off for a four day trek to Torres del Paine...see ya soon Lou & Steve ... read more
