Hola amigos! Hang on, I'm not in South America any more. Old habits die hard... but hooray - no more calling a pepper a cucumber, asking for a lemon biscuit to drink or declaring an undying love for the penis in front of an audience. No more Spanish! But what's this? South Africa's first language is made up of clicking noises and the 'white man's' native tongue is some crazy combination of Dutch and German? The two ugliest languages in the world? Why am I even here? And who is that lanky bastard sitting next to me? I'm pretty sure he wasn't invited. And why is Shrennie still here? I thought I'd shaken him off my tail in Ecuador. Does this mean that Jude is still here? This is all getting very stressful. Ah wait... I ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Otavalo March 23rd 2010

20/3/10 I told a massive lie in my last post. 20 hour bus journeys can be hell. From Mancora to Otavalo we had to get on 3 different buses. The first 3 hour bus to the border of Ecuador involved no leg room and no air conditioning in temperatures well over 30 degrees. Then we got off the bus, got on what looked like a dodgy taxi and headed to our next bus. At least this one was air conditioned, but you could measure out the leg room with a 30cm ruler. Did not get much sleep. Arrive in Quito early in the morning and get straight on another bus to Otavalo. Here is where we have most of our problems. Despite tying the straps of the bag to my feet, a pesky pickpocketer sitting behind ... read more

Hola! 11/3/10 Not much done today apart from walking around and taking in the sights of Cusco, although we do discover a cracking all day English breakfast in an Irish bar called Paddy´s (supposedly the highest Irish bar in the world). 12/3/10 Today is our first day of visiting the Incas ruins. We visit places called Tambomachay, Q´enqo and my personal favourite, Saqsaywaman - where there is a disappointing dearth of good-looking ladies. Dave´s attempts at Spanish are hilarious. The other day he referred to our waitress as the Islamic-sounding ´Sunita´ as opposed to ´Senyorita´. Today, a lot of us want to do the Saqsaywaman tour in a rush because it´s raining, so Dave asks our Spanish-speaking guide, ´Amigo, can we do the... umm... vamos tour of the ruins please.´ We all knew what he meant. ... read more

Hola! Buenos Dias! 2/3/10 Bus gets into La Paz from Potosi at 5am. Yes, 5am. After a nap on a couch, a pancake eating competition is mooted. Most mere mortals manage a meagre 5-6 pancakes, but 'the human dustbin' Shrennie reluctantly finishes his 10th pancake. A clear and worthy victor, but he pays the price for his gluttony over the next few days with constant stomach problems. Walk around the 'Witches Market' where they basically pay for you to have their stuff. So cheap. Buy lots of souvenirs. In the evening, the boys enter a poker tournament. Many hours later, and Adam walks away 3rd and myself second with 60 extra Bolivianos in my pocket (6 quid - big money). Head to 'Blue Club' in the middle of La Paz and end up falling asleep on ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi March 1st 2010

Hola amigos! Firstly, sorry for the crude title. Will explain more about that later. 25/2/10 Start the salt flats tour rather reluctantly given our recent toilet related problems. Cross the border to Bolivia and visit Laguna Verde, Laguna Blanco and Laguna Colorada. The latter is filled with flamingos and nearby llamas and many photos are taken. Especially by Shrennie. That boy could quite easily be Japanese. Llamas are weird animals. They're kind of like sheep with long necks. They are bloody everywhere in Bolivia and they keep running in front of our 4x4. Stay at a reasonably nice hostel in the middle of nowhere. 26/2/10 Another day in the Toyota Land Cruiser with our guide Ronal and the gang. Stop off at a nice warm hot spring but getting out sure isn´t fun in the near ... read more

18/02/10 Bus to Salta from Mendoza. 18 hours. Nuff said. 19/02/10 Get a taxi to ¨Hostel in Salta´from the bus station where it becomes clear that Adam´s Spanish is showing few signs of improvement. When trying to say the number 18 (to tell the taxi driver the length of our bus journey), he keeps saying ´ocho nueve, ocho nueve´(eight nine, eight nine) before trying his luck with ´ochenta y nueve´ (eighty nine) before finally being put out of his misery when Shrennie tells him the word he is looking for is ´dieceocho´. Mistake point as numbers up to 20 should have been learnt in week one. Adam is also a big fan of challenging accepted authority. We´ve come up with a TV programme he could run called ´Adam Smith, busting myth´. One of his many pearls ... read more

Hola Chicos! 11-13/02/10 From Santiago, visit Valparaiso for a few days. It´s a reasonably sizeable city built on a gradient with plenty of quaint housing and artistic graffitti. A lot of it is very pretty but there´s always an undercurrent of danger lurking. It´s very easy to stumble into dodgy looking areas where the locals stare at you and ask for money. But we survived. Didn´t get any real sleep the night before a 7am bus to Mendoza - the capital city of wine tours. Border crossing was a pain in the arse again. Had to wait over 2 hours just to have your passport stamped and bananas confiscated. Those renegade Chilean banana-planters in Argentina ruin it for the rest of us. 13-14/02/10 Clever-Cloggs Shrennie gets confused between what is a hostel and what is a ... read more

Hi guys - lots to update you on but will try and keep it brief! 6/2/10 Finally shave the moustache much to everybody's disappointment. But now I can go out in public without felling like a member of the YMCA. Go out once again and come home to a toilet which is constantly flushing. Both wasteful and actually quite ineffective at the pace it´s going at. 7/2/10 Decide to go cycling in Bariloche today with an Aussie girl called Clea. Within about 5 minutes of setting off, Shrennie 'Bradley Wiggins' Westcott inexplicably manages to lose control of his vehicle at high speed resulting in many nasty grazes, a broken bike, damaged pride, and an unprecedented 3 mistake points. Ouch. Other than that, the cycle is good fun with plenty of views for the eyes to feast ... read more

3/2/09 The hostel that we¨re staying at in Puerto Natales is right opposite a casino. Very dangerous. Jude and I go 4 times in two days. On one such adventure, played Roulette on a Spanish machine. Don¨t understand a word of what¨s being said on the screen and end up accidently putting $5 US on one number having frantically tried to cancel it. It almost came up as well. Have a cracking night playing Ring of Fire with the lads and John in our hostel room in the evening. John spends most of the evening putting on London and then Scouse accents. We do our best to sound like we¨re from the deep south of America. Go to the casino again afterwards. I told you it¨s location was dangerous. 4/2/09 Get the bus to Punta Arenas ... read more

Hola! Back from Torres Del Paine and now in Puerto Natales so giving you a quick insight into what we did. 29/1/09 Get the bus from El Calafate to Puerto Natales in Chile. The border crossing is a real pain in the ass. Have to go though 2 separate controls - one in Argentina and one in Chile. Dogs are running around giving most things a sniff. Get to Puerto Natales and immediately get accosted to a hostel by a female Chilean whose English sounds a lot more like Chinese - ´I have boyfwiend in Basil!´. I don´t care about your Brazilian boyfriend. Her hostel is terrible. When we ask her where we can leave our bags when we go to Torres Del Paine she thinks for a bit and then points to a nearby ledge. ... read more
