It was quite incredible to see a glacier for the first time. To add to the allure, Perito Moreno is one of the only glaciers in the world that is actually increasing in size - it grows approximately 1.5 meters per day! This growth is neutralized however as the glacier calves and breaks off into the lagoon to which it expands. Sarah and I were lucky to see this process in action as huge chunks broke off with a thunderous crash during our day trip. We did an alternative mini-hike and boat tour to the glacier in Parque Nacional Los Glaciers which was a great day. On the way to see the glacier we also spotted Condors, Lamas, Patagonia hares and many sheep on the Estancias and as we approached the glacier we could see icebergs ... read more

Aha, here we go again!!

... read more

We had some more time in Buenos Aires before our flight to El Calafate in the afternoon. We headed over to the Recoleta Cemetery. I was expecting a Central American style of cemetery but this one has many ornate tombs and mausoleums. It is the final resting place of many of the wealthiest and important historical figures. Just outside we saw a paseador de perro, a dog walker, walking many dogs for wealthy Rocoleta families. Not too far away at the United Nations Plaza is a large metal flower sculpture, Floralis Generica, that is solar-powered and opens and closes depending on the time of day. There was a link to Facebook online. Out of curiosity I checked it out; only 6 people like it so far. Something that I thought was ingenious – in-your-face street advertising ... read more

Ola people, Right now we are situated about as far south as a human can get, the last town before you would find yourself on a boat to the antartic circle, surrounded by polar bears, penguins and quickly shrinking parts of the anatomy. Check out the Perito Moreno Glacier on the web for the place we went yesterday, its pretty breathtaking, and makes you feel slightly insignificant seeing as its been there for the last 1.5 million years, is 100 miles long, 60 metres high, and is cooler than i ever could hope to be. Still not quite as cool as Keith Richards though, even at -2 degrees. Anyway we have some ace snaps of it, which when we can figure out how to,(50% of which means when i can be bothered to get the usb ... read more

Wow, just looking at this now and I'm way behind. I guess that's what happens when I'm having so much fun. Anyways... I guess I should mention my day spent in El Calafate checking out Perito Moreno Glacier (I think the fact that I keep thinking of it as Perito MERINO says something about my Aussie-ness). This was a much more sedate day in comparison to my full day. The hike wasn't a hike. It was a walk. But before we went for the walk we went for a nice little boat ride. 50 pesos for 1.5 hours to go look at the glacier up close and hopefully see some calvings etc. I wasn't going to pay the moeny since I didn't have it, but Albert knew I wanted to and so he paid for me. ... read more

What does one day in Calafate hold? Well, dinosaurs, flamigoes, delicious coffee and a car rally - with Herbie in it!! And a sprite too, just for you Harriet and Terry - and yes I took photos as it is not like yours! But, dinosaurs first - down near the coastline there is a tin shed calling itself a museum which has a wonderful display of the dinosaurs found in this area and the change in this part of the earth over the last 60 millions of years - it was really good! Then onto a small reserve for flamingoes which was lovely. The planting would be good for your pond Dave - and I took photos for you too! The flamingoes were superb, lots of them and very pink. I also saw several birds of ... read more

I took a short flight, just over an hour, from Ushuaia to El Calafate. Now I am beginning my journey up north through Patagonia and also look forward to slightly cheaper prices after Ushuaia! It was great returning to the Marcopolo Inn, a hostel I highly recommend, and my expectations were met again with its friendly staff and great rooms with my own ensuite bathroom which I got at a reasonable rate (around 35 GBP per room per night). I was in El Calafate last year and I saw the Perito Moreno glacier (See ). I did not feel I need to go again. I was interested in visiting the Upsala glacier but prices were expensive and also the national park entrance fee the tourists have to pay on top was extortionate! The prices were simply ... read more

Hallo! Kein Haus, kein Baum, kein Garnix! El ... read more

I joined my tour on the 30th of January and was pleased to see that we had gone from a little group of two to four. Lauren, Steve and Allan were to be my travelling buddies for the next 15 days along with our tour leader Juan. We had a great dinner on the Sunday night, I ordered lamb with potatoes and was surprised to see my whopping big piece of lamb dished up with potatoes cooked in every different way i.e. chips, roasted, boiled...seriously I had enough potatoes to have feed the entire table! Monday we flew to El Calafate, a small town which was to be our home for the night. El Calafate, despite it's size, is a gateway to Patagonia and therefore pretty much everyone in the town relies on tourism. There were ... read more
